Configuring Windows Compatibility Mode
Divine Divinity running like a toddler in molasses on your Windows system? Well, this game was developed and released for Windows XP, and chances are you're not running it on a legacy desktop. If you're playing games released for XP or other legacy Windows operating systems on a newer Windows OS and experiencing stuttering, slowdown, and other issues, it's because the operating system architecture has significantly changed between then and now.

Windows 10 and 11 have a useful "compatibility mode" feature for running software intended for use on legacy Windows operating systems. Most importantly, it's easy to use and doesn't require additional downloads. You can use this feature for other older programs as well.

Anyway, have another performance improvement guide for Divine Divinity.

  • In Steam, go to your Library and right-click Divine Divinity. Select "Manage," then "Browse Local Files." This opens the Divine Divinity game folder.
  • In the Divine Divinity folder, look for the executable, "div.exe." Right-click it and select "Properties" from the menu.
  • In the Properties window, select the "Compatibility" tab.
  • In the "Compatibility Mode" section, click the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box and select "Windows XP SP3" from the drop-down list.
  • Hit "Apply" and "OK."
  • In Steam, run Divine Divinity. Accept the prompt to configure the game.
  • Select "Software" mode rather than "Direct 3D."
  • The game works best in 800x600 resolution, which appears to be its intended resolution, but if you want to change that, you can select a different resolution here (and change it back if need be).
  • Have fun!

Note : in your defense, the store here claims it is for Windows XP, though Larian's web site (and other sources) explain that this version was tweaked to work fine with Windows 7. So I set compatibility to Windows 7.

This version 1.0062A (Patch V1.62A) is made to be compatible with Windows 7 according to Larian's official web site.

I clicked on this purely because of the cat picture, but sounds like good advice - thanks! :)
