Augmentations
Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a game that combines stealth, hacking, and superhuman abilities through cybernetic augmentations.

No matter how you plan to proceed in combat (or lack thereof), purchase these augs in this order for optimum gameplay success (really only 1-3 are crucial).
-
1.Hacking capture {all the way to Level 5} (Cranium)
2. Cloaking {start with just the base} (Skin)
3. Extra energy cells (Torso)

4. Conversation enhancer (Cranium)
5. Extra storage (Arms)
6. Icarus Landing System (Back)

Hacking is instrumental in getting around and uncovering loot. You should be able to purchase all the way up to Level 5 while still in Detroit, so make sure to seek out the Level 4 and 5 locks before leaving.

Cloaking is always useful as a shortcut through areas which otherwise would require precise timing to avoid being discovered by guards. Even those pursuing non-Pacifist runs can find themselves outmatched every once in a while. While running cloaked, guards may comment "I hear something" or the like but will not go into 'Hostile' unless you physically bump into them.

Extra energy cells let you take out more guards, stay cloaked longer, and use your augs more flexibly.

Conversation enhancer is essential for a few achievements, and generally makes persuasion easier through the use of pheromones.

More storage lets you keep more loot between trips to the shop, and if you've played any RPG games you'll know how key this is to building your character's wealth.

Icarus Landing System is required for one ebook in the Doctorate achievement.
General tips
Now to info on the actual gameplay of Deus Ex: HR - DC.

-Press F5 to quicksave before hacking. Try to capture the cubic Data Stores for small hacking consumables to be used on Security Level 4 and 5 locked devices. Hack everything, everywhere, and you will level up quickly; if you use passcodes provided in emails or Pocket Secretaries, you forfeit the XP.

-If going for a no-kill run to obtain the Pacifist achievement, you cannot drop unconscious bodies from deadly heights. Moving targets that have been shot with tranquilizers can sometimes kill that target, so use caution. Gas grenades will kill you, but will only knock out NPC's. Feel free to use gas grenades and gas mines to clear out enemies.

-Try to complete all Side Quests before Main Quests, because once the Main Quest of a location is finished, you leave and cannot return to those Side Quests.

-There is ALWAYS a stealthy route to any given target. You just have to look for it.

-In this new Directors Cut, boss battles now have nonlethal options, freeing you from carrying guns, frag grenades, and the Typhoon explosive system. The caveat here is that you will still be shot at by said bosses, so once your core augs are purchased you may choose to invest in Dermal Armor.

-When first given the option of taking a stun gun or tranquilizer rifle, choose the stun gun. It works instantly and guarantees one knock-out per shot, in addition to being completely silent. In contrast, the tranq rifle takes time for the dart to hit the target, and is affected by bullet-drop gravity.

-If in a stealth situation where you cannot find a feasible way to reach your target undetected, there is no shame in eating a few bars of energy to run invisible to your destination. As long as you are cloaked, enemies may comment on your footsteps but will not engage you.

-Upon visiting a new area, locate the LIMB clinic and purchase both Praxis Kits (5000 credits each). These are the single most rare and valuable item in the game, as well as the only way to upgrade augmentations. Praxis kits can still be obtained from leveling up, but this is a much slower method.

-Manually save before boss battles, arguments with key important characters, and possible decisions. There are MANY missable achievements tied to conversations.

-For the "Foxiest of the Hounds" achievement, you can be detected by the red 'Hostile' indicator, as long as no alarm is sounded. However, you will not receive the 'Ghost' mission bonus for any missions where you are spotted by enemies.

The above contains everything you need to know about gameplay, but walkthroughs and achievement guides can still be useful for getting missable achievements and finding hidden loot. Also take care not to forget all the ebooks you must view for the Doctorate achievement which is one of the career-long achievements.

Oh, and in any Immersive Sim game, I typically get High Jump, Increased Strength, and Stealth. High jump opens up new areas through higher-floors, increased strength usually lets you move things out of the way to find new areas OR stack things to get to higher areas. For me it's basically about getting access to as many out-of-the-way areas as possible to find secrets/gear/money/xp/etc. Oh, and stealth/invisibility can let you easily get to places you normally wouldn't be able to without having to get into huge fights.
I do this in Dishonored, Prey, all the Deus Ex Games, etc.

It's been a while since I played HR, but there MAY be an aug that increases either the speed or the number of units of energy that recharge. This can be awesome, as otherwise you have to keep eating those finite food items that recharge batteries. Even if it's just the 1 bar that recharges, if it charges quick that can mean the difference of having a few seconds of cloak or another takedown by just hiding for a few seconds.

Oh, this one is SUPER annoying, but picking up a second copy of a weapon (picking up a pistol when you already have one) gives you ammo. So if you want to get crazy-money, you have to pick up and sell just single weapons at a time. This may mean 3-4 trips back/forth through an area you already cleared, but that cash means more of those praxis kits you can buy in each area at I THINK 5K a piece. Not sure if there is a mod for this, but I found that the extra cash was usually worth it.

Actually when first given an option of weapons you should take the tranquilizer rifle anyway, since a stun gun can be found past the gate where you knock out the first guard.

Felt something needed to be corrected. The stun gun and tranquiliser rifle are NOT silent - if you fire it near an enemy, they will hear and react as if you fired a normal gun. The stun gun also does not reach its target instantly.

Regarding mission completion rewards (as well as "Hoxiest Of The Hounds" achivement):

Ghost EXP reward is always guaranteed, if HOSTILE mode was never engaged. There IS however a small detail: Turrets are stupidly scripted: When going in yellow (SUSPICIOUS), but then losing sights of you, it goes into fake HOSTILE mode, dispite cooling off. So the Ghost reward will only vanish if the turret engages you for REAL. You can notice it, if it stays in HOSTILE mode for way longer than the fake one. Or, most likely - it will shoot! So once it fires - Ghost failed.

If you want to ensure the alarm is never risen, know this - enemies NEVER unload. If you poorly hide a body, any guard can sound the alarm because of it, REGARDLESS of how far away are you. So alarms can be triggered without even you knowing it! Think twice about your actions (blowing walls, breaking objects, bodies).

viper_2029:

Unlethal, double takedown grants maximum experience. If you wish to get the most EXP from dealing with enemies, take them in pairs, lure singular gards together. And no kills. You can cap ZZZ bodies later if you wish, it does not take any EXP back. It will only set your next save file tag "pacifist" to 0, locking the related achivement.

Oh and be careful with body draging collision, since it never stops collecting it. If you touch ZZZ body 1 minute later, it will apply all collision, ragdoll stupidly and kill the person, also counting it as YOUR fault. So hide bodies quick and never bother them again.

you really dont need more than level 3 hacking for a good while; you can just use hacking tools for 4 and 5

What's the best way to gain XP poitns when confronting hostiles/guards? Should I leave them undisturbed or tranquilize them?

once I get level 3 hacking unlocked I rob the armoury at the police station in detroit
