The Thief series has always had it is own bone fan base and has not been sufficiently appreciated in the world. By preparing installation and modding guides about the games, I try to help those who will start the series on the one hand, and on the other hand, I try to ensure that the Thief series gets the value it deserves. You can find what you need to install and learn when starting the games in this guide.

Before following the steps in this guide, it is recommended that you back up your game files just in case. It is very important to have the original game files on hand.

Since the game is old, it does not run properly on modern systems. Low resolution support, non-working videos and graphical errors are among the most noticeable problems. In order to fix these issues and ensure that the game runs smoothly on modern systems, we will download and install the unofficial patch prepared by Thief's fan community.

Steam version have problems. You need to install TFix Lite or one of the TFix versions. The GOG version does not have problems. It includes the TFix Lite version. However, in order to take full advantage of the contents of TFix and the unofficial patch, you need to install the TFix version in the GOG version.

Extract the TFix_Lite_NewDark_1.27_02jul2019.7z file somewhere with 7-Zip.

Move everything from the file to the game folder.

Open the install.cfg file in the game folder with Notepad.

You will see the following lines.

Change the lines as follows.

After changing the lines, save the file.

Enter the game once and exit.

TFix may not install if your file location is directory protected. For a workaround, move your game folder to C and install it that way. After installation, put your game folder back to its original location.

Run the TFix_1.27b.exe file.

After selecting the game folder, select Install and start the installation.














Wait for the installation to complete.














Here it asks whether anti-aliasing will be enabled or disabled. If you want anti-aliasing to be disabled, say No. If you have a bad system, say Yes.














After the installation is complete, say Finish.















Enter the game once and exit.

You need to make some adjustments before playing.

Thief 1 Special

• Do not skip the training mission. The story of the game starts here.

Thief 1 and Thief 2 Common

• The game has 3 difficulty levels as Normal, Hard and Expert. The gameplay changes as the difficulty level increases. When the difficulty level is normal, it is free to kill people, asks you to do less missions, less looting, and ends the chapter on the spot. As the difficulty level increases, killing is forbidden, it asks you to do more missions, more looting, and to leave and return to the starting point. In addition, as the difficulty level increases, secret passages are closed, Garrett's health capacity decreases, and Garrett makes fewer comments during the game.

Thief 1 and Thief 2 Common

• Remember to spend your money at the beginning of each mission as your money is reset after each level.
  
• Try to cut the flags with a sword. There may be secret rooms and passages behind them.
  
• If you approach the doors and press Q or E, you can listen to the sounds coming from inside.
  
• To save the game just in case, use quick-save most of the time, rarely hand save.
  
• It is useful to check your objectives by pressing O frequently during the game.
  
• You can click somewhere on your map and write special notes to yourself.

Thief 1 and Thief 2 Common

• The shiny stone on the screen shows how visible you are.
  
• Always hide in the darkest corners. Duck down if your hiding spot is not too dark.
  
• You can't raise the alarm and take down an enemy coming straight at you from your hiding spot. They will notice. For this, you can club them by using the ctrl + w combination at the right time.
  
• As long as they don't see you, you can get behind the alarmed enemies and club them.
  
• Sometimes you can knock enemies unconscious when you get behind them during combat. Do not hit them too much or they may die.
  
• Every ground has a different sound. Some grass makes no sound at all, while some grass makes a lot of sound. There is not much noise on wood, but be careful when walking on wood. Marble makes a lot of noise. You must use a moss arrow. To do this, use the ctrl + w combination and walk slowly.

Thief 1 and Thief 2 Common

• You can retrieve the rope arrows from the board.
  
• You can kill zombies with holy water arrows, fire arrows or flash grenades.
  
• The flash grenade blinds enemies for a few seconds when thrown once. When thrown several times, it kills zombies and ghouls.

The 3000 here is the money it will give you separately from the amount it will give you from the previous mission. You can change the number here according to yourself, but 3000 will even be too much.

With the Gold version, the makers have included a secret section in the game called Bugs.

To play the Build Bugs mission, open the USER.CFG file in your game's main folder and add the following code to an empty line.
Then log in to the game and say Pass Tutorial. I recommend removing the code after playing the chapter, otherwise this mission will pop up every time you start the game.

To play fan missions created by fans, you need one of the fan mission loaders. When you install the unofficial patch, the fan quests loader FMSel comes ready, but since FMSel is outdated, problems may occur when running fan missions. Some old fan missions may not work properly. You may experience problems during the game. For example, the objectives may not work or characters may not move.

This may be related to the fan mission, the outdated NewDark in your game, or some other problem. It is also possible that the NVScript file in the fan mission is out of date. I've seen characters not speaking in a fan mission, and after searching the Through the Looking Glass forum, I found out that the problem is that the NVScript is out of date. The creator of the fan mission included the NVScript in the fan mission. No matter how up to date the NVScript my game was using, the fan mission was reading from its old NVScript. So I updated the NVScript in the fan mission and fixed the problem, but this is an exception. Not every fan task has this problem.

How to disable mods in normal game or fan missions?
If you are using AngelLoader, you do not need to do the following. You can do it in the Mods section in AngelLoader.
Mods in your game are also detected in many fan missions you play. Therefore, when you play fan missions, you will not get the gameplay experience that the creators want to show you. In some fan missions you will even see a note from the creators about this. The solution to this is to disable mods. To disable these mods, go to the main folder of your game. Open the cam_mod file here. You will see a code like in the example.
This line and its code recognises which folders to read the mods from in your game. In short, after the + sign, it introduces another mod, after the / sign, it introduces the inside of the folder. What we will do here is to copy all the code except FMdml. Of course the code may be different for you.
As you can see, I didn't get the FMdml mod. What is FMdml? Some fan missions, especially the older ones, have problems. Missions or characters get stuck. The FMdml package fixes these problematic fan missions with small codes without touching the fan mission itself. It collects the codes of hundreds of fan missions under a single folder. That's why I didn't just disable FMdml, we'll need it for playing fan missions. In AngelLoader, go to Edit HG. Paste that code into the Disabled Mods box.

The in-game fonts look small. How can I make them bigger?
Open the cam_ext.cfg file in the main folder of your game and change the following code as in the example.
