The way extensions are written are that the letters on the left side of the word in the parenthesis can each be attached to the right of the word, and likewise for the letters on the left. This is not to say that the letters on the left and right can be attached at the same time. For example, IO can become BIO or ION but not BION.
Usefulness
The two-letter words are (in my opinion) practically required for their general utility, but even the longer words can sometimes be useful:
