How to deceive ethernet elitists to play with you (a wi-fi player)
Door Cradle Star
Now that Version 4.0 has dropped, Bandai Namco, due to the amount of requests, introduced a "Wi-Fi Indicator". I'll show you how to "appear" as an Ethernet player while still using your Wi-Fi connection, because having cables around in 2020 is wack af.

Pre-configuration
Let's pop those guys' balloons. We, Wi-Fi players deserve to play the game in a proper fashion pretty much like those guys that haven't ever felt the warmth of a woman and/or haven't left their room in quite a few months.

In order to do this process, that will allow you to play with ethernet players (as they might think you're a fellow ethernet player) you're gonna need:

  • An android-based Smartphone
  • An USB cable (that you can connect to your phone, and your PC)
  • Wifi connection (optional. You could use your phone's data plan to play and ruin those guys' days)

And of course, your PC, and your copy of Tekken 7 here on Steam.

Let's delve into it.
How does it works:
This is how a Wi-Fi connection usually looks. As you can see, I'm connected to a Wi-Fi network, and my PC has internet access due to the fact that I'm connected.

And this is the end result, this is what we're trying to achieve:

As you can see, now it has the LAN logo instead. However, I've not connected a LAN cable to my PC. I'm, in fact, receiving my internet connection via Wi-Fi. Yet, my PC believes it is connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable.
How to do it:
Follow these steps:

Step 1:

Install the USB drivers for your Phone, in your computer. And restart it. In my case, since I'm using an old Motorola G 3rd Generation platform, I had to install Motorola USB Drivers. It's the same deal for any phone. Just look up the name of your smartphone + usb drivers in Google and you're bound to find them in no time.

Step 2:

Connect an USB cable to your computer, preferably to one of the USB ports in the back. If you're using a laptop, it doesn't really matter where you connect it. However, in both cases, try and prop your phone somewhere where it won't move.

Step 3:

Connect the USB cable to your phone. Wait a few minutes until your system detects it and installs the proper connection with the driver you've provided beforehand.

Step 4:

Go into your phone's configurations/settings app. The way to do this can be different depending on your phone, but this is how it looks for Motorola phones:

Settings > More (under the Network Configs tab) > Usb Tethering and Portable Hotspots > Enable USB Tethering.

Step 5:

Once that's done, the network menu on your PC should look a bit like this

As you can see, I'm still connected to Wifi, but a new "Lan" network has appeared (Red 2) just above the one Wi-Fi connection I'm using.

Just disconnect yourself from that Wi-Fi network or deactivate the Wi-Fi mode.

Step 6:

If you followed all the previous steps, your taskbar icon for network connections should look like this:

I recommend you restart Steam, and then you can launch Tekken 7. When you go into ranked mode, there won't be any Wi-Fi indicators and thus you'll get all the matches.

That's all, have fun!

To all who don't understand why someone can't play on LAN.

I am working in Africa and living in a compound with company provided wifi that are shared by many employees. I cannot plug a LAN cable with hundreds of meters away to my room, so yeah this usb tethering method seems useful and better than playing on wifi.

Simply my phone get connection from wifi and transfers to my laptop in a form of wired connection (which is usb cable). Played with my female friend from Thailand this morning and she said that the match is more stable than when I played on wifi last time.

I don't use mobile data connection from phone, mind you. I play on wifi connection that transfers to my mobile phone to my laptop. I get better connection online playing ranked matches.

A friend of mine showed me this and I laughed my ass off.. sure ethernet is better but as a FGC guy that actually plays locals and stuff I will say this... ONLINE IS ONLINE. as long as the netcode isn't horrible its going to be the way it is and if the game has rollback especially you shouldn't be bitching. it happens. have fun
