Braid has a very bizarre and complicated behavior regarding the player rewinding Tim back onto a magic board while holding a key. In order for the key to be held in Tim's hand, the following rules must be obeyed. First of all, Tim must not leave his "standing state" (i.e. jump from ground) at the edge of the magic board, otherwise Tim will just "stuck" in a strange state with no green glow at the edge of the board when you rewind back (he is not actually stuck there, that's just how the game behaves when it does not find a magic board beneath Tim). Secondly, You need to rewind after the extended glow ends (this is because Braid treats Tim and other things in the world differently when recording their history for rewinding, more specifically, the frames when Tim is glowing green in rewinding time is recorded (and thus can be played back) for Tim but not for the key, which is only recorded in sync with the other objects in the world, so Tim will get desynced with the key).

But, here comes the weird part. Even when the above two conditions are both met, It is still not guaranteed that the key will be held in Tim's hand when rewinding back. There is a hidden variable here. There are two states of Tim holding a key. One is the normal state, which we will call "state 1" from here on; the other is a special state, where although the key is in Tim's hand when he is moving normally, it will NOT be in Tim's hand when you rewind time (but its position overlaps with Tim's hand so it seems Tim is still holding the key), we will call this "state 0". Now the rule is, when Tim is rewound back to a magic board with a key in state 1, the key will remain in Tim's hand (but there is a caveat here, which will be addressed at the end), then (after releasing shift) the state of the key will be changed to state 0, so if you repeat the same actions again, the key will not be in Tim's hand this time. To reset the state of the key to state 1, you can do a short rewind, upon releasing shift you will hear a "ding" sound indicating Tim has picked up the key again (and set the key to state 1). Another thing to note is that, when you are rewinding time while standing on a magic board with a key in state 1, if you reach the point of time when you have not picked up the key (only the last time counts; you will hear a reversed "ding" sound), it will also revert to state 0 (this is demonstrated at 0:18 - 0:28 in the video).

The above rules are all nice and clear, but they are only guaranteed to hold if Tim did not do too many things after he left the magic board and before rewinding (I know this sounds vague, but this is the best I can describe). There are some things that if Tim does after he leaves the board, state 1 could be "compromised" (but it's not in state 0 either, since rewinding time does not produce the "ding" sound), and the key will not be in Tim's hand after the rewind. I have not figured out the exact rules as to which actions will compromise state 1, but it seems the more complicated the actions are, the more likely they will. The only thing I can say is that neither dying (by either spikes or monsters), unlocking a door, going too far nor falling from too high will necessarily compromise state 1. I have not yet found the determining factor, and I would be happy if anyone could help me with this.

(P.S. Just a little complaint... The first solution is actually quite hard to execute. It must have taken me over a hundred tries to get the timing down for the upper left purple door...)
