Introduction to the Guide
Massive Update To The Guide Applied ::::UPDATED 26th October 2013::::... hopefully its easier to navigate this guide!, comments please

Please do not copy or post any part of this guide anywhere without asking and gaining written permission.

(You may also be interested to learn the last update the DEVS included mouse sensitivity adjustments and inversion options.)

...If like me and you decided to buy the game to support the DEVS and have not got around to buying a controller then simply follow this guide to play the game on your keyboard and mouse :) This is my first guide, so if you find the guide useful please rate it....:)

Steam and Undead labs are NOT currently supporting keyboard controls, so please do not annoy the devs with controller questions as they need time to finish the game. The thing is keyboard and mouse do work, however they are defaulted settings and unchangeable... so they can NOT be changed.

Starting the Game; Game Preferences & Common Issues
Anyway At the start you may want to adjust your video card settings / sounds e.t.c. or just get the game working, simply use WSAD to navigate the selector and left and right mouse button to get things going...

Commonly it would appear that the right mouse button acts as a back button ((B on the controller)) when inside a menu / Journal or map. It's also good to know this also works as Left Trigger to start survey mode when up high.

If at any point you want to look at these controls when in danger, simply pressing ESC key will pause the game. note that map mode, radio mode and inventory do NOT pause the game.

On a side note; you may find lock ups using the keyboard when you are for example running and trying to move camera or move away from a zombie; what I’m getting at here is generally when 3 keyboard buttons are pressed at the same time you will experience a lock up and no control when the 4th button is pushed, this is NOT the Devs fault, but a mixture of your controller chip inside your keyboard and windows USB/PS2 limitations...

CHARACTER SHEET
Within this view you can see the current character you are playing with, once you press tab the selector will be on your character, you can use WASD to move around the other characters and swtich to them by pressing the Q key, this works proving they are not busy doing something else.

Once you put the selector over your current character and press space you can view their inventory traits, favourite weapon e.t.c.

SKILLS
Pressing TAB again will bring up the SKILLS for your current character. You can navigate through here by pressing WASD and SPACE and ESC to go back.

This is a journal record/diary of things that have previously happend, you can navigate this with WASD and space to view things

To break a door open, simply run at a door (note this is loud and may cause attention)
To open a locked a door simply press E and keep pressing left click to Ram.

Windows Controls
To jump through a window simply stand in front of one and press space
Note you can also run and jump through a window if needed for a quick escape, this also works from the outside in and inside out... be carful too, this works from two/three story buildings so damage may be caused at the bottom! :P

To build a baracade over a window, hold down E
Searching and Salvaging...
Searching and Salvaging...

Reason most of us play this game for loot and treasure! Searchable items are always in a bright aura, glowing silver, this indicates the item can be searched. To search simply stand infront of the glowing item and hold the E key, once this is held down you will see the search begins.

You can speed up the search by holding down the E key, and pressing down left shift to begin searching faster, note this is nosier and may attract unwanted attention.

Once you have completed the search you will see your inventory on the left pop up infront of you and the contents on the item you have just searched are on the right... now from here you can use WSAD to move the item you want, then press space to take an item (note if you want to take 10 bullets, instead of pressing space 10 times you can press E to take a batch of 10).

Once you press space it should then move to your inventory on the left, if you want to put an item back, simply go to your inventory using W/A/S/D on the left side and press Space to click to put it back. (or press E to put 10 bullets back)

When salvaging you will also encounter materials, food, ammo e.t.c., this is always carried by your character in backpack form. This adds significant weight to you so your stamia WILL reduce quickly. So ensure you dont get eaten on the way home. You will also get situations where you need to carry two back packs, what you can do here is call for help, so a member of your team will run from home to your current location... To activate this, simply press the E key on the item and then use LEFT click to activate call for scavengers.

This can be dangerous if you leave your guy to do this alone, so it does give you the option to wait around and work together getting home.

You will also see this is a category view system and by default you are in ammo, simply press TAB inside here to take you to the next tab, weapons, first aid e.t.c....

....

Advanced Fighting & Shooting Controls
Advanced Fighting Controls

Power Attack = hold LEFT SHIFT & LEFT CLICK

Silent Kill = LEFT SHIFT & E = ((note for this to work you have to undetected by zombies and you also have to be crouching, quiet and behind them for this to work))

Dodge Attack = LEFT CTRL or C ((this has to be timed just as they attack you))

After a dodge you can counter in numerous ways below,
LEFT SHIFT & E or C = Push a zombie away
SPACE = Jumps and hit.
Hold LEFT SHIFT and SPACE = Will perform a jumping drop kick.
Hold LEFT SHIFT and LEFT mouse Click = Performs a forward roll out of danger then jumps and hits

LEFT SHIFT & E or just Z on the keyboard can also finish off an enemy who is laying on the ground.

To perform a jump drop kick, press LEFT SHIFT + SPACE + E at the same time.

To add suppressor to the gun, make sure it's in your inventory and selected by using the mouse wheel, then simply press F to add it to your weapon. Note some guns need certain silencers / compatibility mode. (for those who do not know, silencers cut down the noise a gun makes)

Some rifles have a scope, this adds a zoom effect and can be activated by pressing the Q key.

When laying on the ground and being eaten to death by a zombie, it will say press A repeatable to get up.... "calmly" click LEFT MOUSE BUTTON AND HOLD IT DOWN (as if you are going to do an EMOTE) and repeatable press SPACE for your life! (press it very quickly like you're playing an old 80's game)

When getting your neck eaten from behind keep pressing C or LEFT CTRL as fast as you can to elbow/kick off the zombie.
XBOX Controls - Translated
Depending on your circumstances wether you are driving or on foot or inside a menu system these controls do swap and change around, for exampe DPAD LEFT is the A key, but when your on foot or driving it brings up the map....The Translator below is the general emulation of the joypad, as you can see it can get a bit tricky.

LB = SHIFT
RB = F
(A) = Space
(B) = CTRL
(X) = Q
(Y) = E
LT = Right Mouse Click
RT= Left Mouse Click
DPAD UP = TAB (brings up inventory/character sheet)

I'm curious: when I first bought this game, I had no idea that it was originally made for controllers, so I had no problems with K+M. Then it occured to me that many people were having issues with the "port" to PC and that it wasn't made for K+M, like Dark Souls was. In short, K+M seems a way better way to control the game from a PC gamer's perspective, but then why do so many people think of it like Dark Souls in respect to it's supposed difficulty to control with K+M?
