I highly disagree with it, shortcuts in this game are a must early on, even more so for people struggling with the game (which is very common) because its the only way to practically "train in a new area" to get accustomed to the new traps and the new monsters and environment. I'd call it essential from that point of view. Otherwise you spend your time doing the same levels, only to get obliterated on the first level of the new area, simply because you are not used to it yet, and this only leads to frustration and feels cheap. So my advice: Do use shortcuts to play a new area enough times until you feel comfortable in it, then indeed start the game without shortcuts.
6. I would argue that killing giant spiders after the first isn't worth it unless they're in your way or you bought extra bombs, since you risk running out of bombs. If you kill even 2 giant spiders you will not be able to spend any more bombs without risking not being able to open the black market
7. You can fight Yama without angering shopkeepers by buying the Ankh. It is safer in my opinion if there is no jetpack and/or few bombs available, or no paste. You can't CONSISTENTLY buy the Ankh, because it's expensive, but around 2/3 of the time yeah.
but that's just me being picky :)
what kind of maniac would boot up spelunky for the first time and go "im gonna beat yama!"
just use shortcuts until you beat olmec and then stop using them
