Overview

Paradox is a beautiful company and their games have a sea of details and tought put on them, but even "godlike" beigns such as Johan can sometimes make some mistakes, specially with flags. This mod fixes that and pursuits to establish historically accurate flags for all nations of Europa Universalis IV, which includes both all nations on the timeframe, all releasable nations and all formable nations. It aims to embellish them into more pleasing designs when possible by following heraldic descriptions, which are open to interpretation on regards of design of the elements described. Ordo Heraldica Regum et Ducum strives to create an immersive atmosphere where you can look at the flags of the game and think "This is the same flags the people on this time period used to see flying off palaces and army pikes....why that Farroupilher fellow made this pointless mod again?". All flags presented on this mod were either used on the real life timeframe of the game and are often from the 16th to 18th century which captures most of the timespan of the game or are original creations with as most cultural and historical elements from the region's history as possible.

I base all the flags on this mod from historical sources such as the Book of Knowledge of All Kingdoms, the Catalan Atlas, local historical sources, aswell as many different armorials.

Because it is supposed to work on the vanilla shields so you will be able to see the whole flag.




The mod on the current state covers all of the European continent, the Maghreb, Anatolia, Middle East, Caucasus, Persia, Afghanistan, Nubia, the Horn of Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, Indochina and the Malay/Indonesian Archipelago. More yet to come :^)




Sure, I plan on making a sub-mod with different versions of the flags so you can pick your favorite. It is latin for "Heraldic Order of Kings and Dukes" and comes from the "Ordo Regum et Ducum", which is an old document from the Papal States over the question of the Precedence among Nations involving the order by which international meetings and among ambassadors should be attented by the Pope. At the Council of Constance in 1415, disputes broke out among delegations of the various nations on who should enter after whom, be seated next to whom, and speak after whom. Various temporary solutions were adopted at the time, but with the explicit proviso that they were not to set any precedent. In an attempt to put an end to the quarrels between ambassadors to the Holy See, Pope Julius II set forth an order of precedence. It was only binding in the Papal States, and was rejected by the Holy Roman Emperor as not binding on him. The list became obviously moot as regards all kings and princes who left the Catholic Church soon after. The list appears in the diary of the Master of Ceremonies of the Pope, Paris de Grassis, for the year 1505 (cited in Notices et Extraits des Manuscrits du Roi, vol. 2, p. 624, 1789).

Ordo Heraldica Regum et Ducum gets the designs of the flags of the European nations mainly from the Wappenwiki Project, and in a more overall manner to the flags of all nations from Wikimedia Commons, Vexilla Mundi and FOTW. All rights and credits to the creators and contributors on those sites, their work is magnificent and of utmost help to the existence of this mod. Also, many flags of nations which did not exist on the timeframe of the game or are used in an specific manner that depreciate the immersion (forming Italy or Romania in the 1600s with Napoleonic and Morden Romanian flags are examples that come to mind) have been altered with criative liberty, but respecting the rule of realism.
