has some unfortunate server lag (very similar to mario maker 2 but no where near as bad) and also some balance issues (the revive is pretty lame). but honestly this game is so fun it doesn't even matter.

i love this game but i've got A LOT of issues with it.

everything great about jet set radio is here, most notably: the STYLE. great visuals, ridiculous story, and phenomenal music. but that style was already done by jsr and i felt like it was more so team reptiles job to fix jsr's biggest issue... the gameplay. and did they? kinda.

pretty much everything has been improved but not by much. the camera shows the floor instead of your ass now... but it can often jitter about or clip into the floor. there's now multiple styles... but those styles don't differ much beyond visuals and slight tweaks. the movement is all around a lot better and mechanically rich... but i felt like the game had a speed issue. why tf does my skateboard instantly slow down after using the rockets strapped to my back. there is very little momentum building and it can just feel a bit static at times.

there is an overall issue of inconsistency. sometimes im having the time of my life but then im lost and frustrated. it keeps switching between 2023 modern game design, and design of the 2000s. they also decided to keep the lesser parts of jsr. why is there combat? it serves nothing other than interrupting the movement. and the boss fights? they suck... except for the last one. why? cause it has very little focus on combat and instead focuses on rail grinding and tagging... just like every other boss fight SHOULD have been.

then there's the price. it is not worth it at full price. i got it for about $38 AUD down from $58.50 which still isn't great but so far its the best sale ive seen. the length definitely goes against the price but another area that seriously goes against it is polish. a lot of things are polished, but a lot isnt. as i said, the camera often clips into geometry. maybe excusable in more awkward areas that most people wouldn't go, but on very intentionally designed rail grinds? no. the quarter pipes are also just kind of garbage. when they work they're great but so often my character just glitches out on them. in fact there are lots of areas where you'll just stutter about constantly hitting the ground over and over. wall riding also feels a bit.. off. there never quite feels like my camera has enough space on walls, and when going around bends, the camera will very quickly snap behind me. for the price, these issues really should have been fixed.

despite all that, SOMEHOW, i did really enjoy the game. when it's fun, its REALLY fun. i just feel like it could've done more to fix the game it so heavily borrows from.

it shouldn't be this fun. and yet, it is.

nails the aesthetic (thought it would cause motion sickness but i was fine). needs more variety but great foundation.
