10/10 - Quite exquisite.

New Dawn can be split into 3 parts: the majority, the expeditions, and the finale.

The majority of the game is very similar to Far Cry 5. Same (but slightly smaller) open world, and the typical outpost liberation. It's fine. If you enjoyed it in 5, then you'll enjoy it here.

The expeditions are completely isolated levels. I do not understand the thought process with these. They're the most creative, and ambitious environments in the whole game, and yet each expedition will take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. It feels like they had much grander plans for these but had to scrap it last minute cause there is an insane amount of wasted potential here.

Then there's the finale. Up until this point, despite the typical flaws of the series, the game is very fun. But this is where they really drop the ball. Things get slow here and it just feels very padded out. It's a real shame for the game to end on such a lame note.

6.5 / 10 - Nothing special, but it's certainly (mostly) fun.

Fun but flawed.

The simple reality is that without a friend to play through this with and to banter with, there would be little enjoyment to be had here. The puzzles are just... so obtuse. Many of them make some very basic blunders and oftentimes the prevailing emotion is anger instead of fear. Not exactly what you'd want from a horror game.

There are certainly some great horror moments and, for the most, it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares, and instead favours more atmospheric horror. The variety of environments is also great. It keeps things fresh and levels rarely outstay their welcome.

6.5 / 10 - Very enjoyable with a friend, but unfortunately, I don't believe the same could said for single player.

i do not get this game. whenever i see discussions comparing 3, 4, and 5, people always seem to claim persona 3 has the best story. 40 hours in and i cant help but think these people are heavily blinded by nostalgia. nothing really happens. at the end of each month there's a full moon, you do a boss fight, you get a tiny snippet of story, and then that's about it. story content will be mostly dry for the next 5 to 10 hours. and the story content that is there? it's boring. the characters are boring. you don't even get to know them in any significant way. the male party members don't have social links, and the female party members don't have their social links unlocked until about half way through the game. i'm more attached to a shady business man by a fountain than almost anyone in my party. persona 5 always had me excited to see what comes next. the only reason i wanted to know what came next here was in the hope that something interesting would happen. it's entirely possible that the story will get really good in the last 20 or so hours, but that is not good enough. a 60 hour game where only a third of it has a good story is a 60 hour game with a bad story.

the gameplay also isn't too great. the combat is great... in moderation. but unfortunately persona 3 uses procedurally generated dungeons which are as soulless as they sound and basically only serve as a repetitive series of corridors to have fights in. this was fine for a little bit but nearing the end of my time with this game i found myself just rushing through them, avoiding combat, hoping to get to something interesting in the story. the dungeons are just a mediocre chore to pad out a mediocre story.

most of the social links are very basic. they really are just pretty normal conversations, and the 10th rank where you'd expect some sort of emotional conclusion to occur, just typically ends up being a bit of a non-ending. also the music. its very good. but there's not much of it. i feel like with persona 5, and even persona 4, there was a track for every mundane situation, place, and emotion. but here, you'll be hearing most of the same tracks for a while.

it just feel like they could've done a lot more cause as it stands, persona 3 needs quite a bit more than a face lift.

5/10 - a bland story that, unlike its successors, does very little to draw me back in.

very fun and doesn't outstay its welcome.

i don't entirely understand what i just played. but whatever it was, i liked it.

im bad at it but very chill and serene. Just needs a smoother camera.
