An absolute blast of a dungeon crawler. Was hooked from the first run. I would recommend this to any fan of roguelikes full stop. The flexiscope is a really cool feature that basically makes it to where you can progress at any speed you want, which is pretty nice when you don't have much time to play. Also, I'm usually not one for achievements, but the way that they are structured make them really fun to pursue. Also, the fact that there are DLCs to be released in the future is really exciting, as the base game alone is amazing.

This is one of the few games where I felt had no choice but to sit and finish it in one sitting. I was totally gripped by the intellectually stimulating narrative from start to finish. This is undoubtedly one of the most intelligent and clever horror stories ever told in a video game format. I have a few main points

1. The episodic structure

While there is an option to unlock all episodes at once, I highly recommend going chronologically. The mystery builds higher and higher with each it iterration, the suspense boiling until it hits a breaking point in epsiode 4. It's just one of those stories that makes you go "Wow." This game left me with a feeling akin to seeing the credits roll after finishing a movie like Memento or Fight Club.

2. The Audio

Music

The music in this title is wonderful. The 80's retro synths will make you wish you were driving your DeLorean down a dark deset highway. The soundtrack is very reminiscent of the music in Stranger Things. Ominious, but engaging synths that are straight from an old Yamaha keyboard. The ambient music can also get very spooky at times, with the subdued melancholy piano right behind you at every step.

SFX

The sound effects in this title are really what makes it so incredible. From the very start I was already noticing that the execution of sound in this game would be what carried the narrative, and my presumption was correct. From every lightning strike, whir of a drill, and tik-tak of a keyboard, I was all ears. While most of the story is based around text, the finer things are buried within the sonics. A faint car crash, the beep of a heartrate monitor, no matter what it is, the title succeeds at making you think it's actually there in the room with you. The use of surround sound adds life and depth to the what would otherwise be a very simple walking simulator. This goes without saying - make sure you use headphones when playing this title.

3. Graphics

Being on the Unity engine, I wasn't expecting a whole lot in the way of graphics, but I was a little surprised. The textures are very clean, and the use of lighting, especially in epsiode 1, are very visually pleasing.

4. The story as a whole

The entire story is a very interesting foray into mental health, and the way the perception of reality can be altered based around that. I won't say much here as most of the gratification of this story is figuring things out along with the protag. One thing I will say is that the story is gripping and unlike may I see in games nowadays.

Closing

I got this on sale for something like $3.50, but I would have gladly paid full price. Devolver Digital is one of my favorite devs/publishers, and No Code deserves nothing but praise for their unique and exciting spin on the horror game.
