Takes less than 3 minutes to complete the entire game
There are 3 difficulties (easy, medium, hard) and each difficulty only has ONE level. I kid you not. The worst thing is that each level takes less than a minute to beat, so you can literally complete the entire game in under 3 minutes! The biggest ripoff I've seen in my entire life! Got this as part of a bundle outside Steam, so can't refund it!

Good premise marred by appallingly atrocious language use

A free visual novel with a good idea and ending, whose overall enjoyment is destroyed completely by the writer's poor linguistic skills.

E.g.:
- wrong grammar (e.g. "did she simply turned a blind eye")
- wrong vocabulary (e.g. "inedible" used instead of "inaudible" to mean not within earshot)
- inability to distinguish when to use singular vs plural form (e.g. "a bit more details")
- inconsistent use of tenses in narration (e.g. story is told in the past tense but some sentences are suddenly phrased in the present)
- wrong use of prepositions

There are some phrases I couldn't even understand. E.g. "He saw me as a wall to escalate."; "Before he could escalate the wall." Huh???????

Compelling story where choices really do matter
You play a guard who's supposed to cross a sinister lake that's overrun with monsters, in order to reach a village on the other side to render aid to its inhabitants. Despite being free, this is one of the better visual novels out there in terms of quality and production values. The plot is well-paced and there is sense of urgency because some choices are timed, and the decisions you make are weighty & significant and do often result in vastly different outcomes. Conversations are mostly well-voiced (though there were a few instances where, due to a bug or something, the audio didn't play) and characters well-crafted. There are multiple different endings, with a few of them unlocking bonus content in the form of a short substory. Worth a play if you like controlling the fate of characters in a horror setting.

A mind-numbingly boring pixel-graphic walking simulator
Walked around for a good 20 minutes with nothing happening. There's no direction, no goal, nothing. You're just supposed to walk... where to I have no idea. What for? Dunno. Nothing is explained. The game starts off by saying "memories" will be triggered at some points, but after 20 minutes of going through screen after screen without the ability to interact with ANY of the objects on the screen at all, I gave up. Some screens look like they're dead ends too, so you have to backtrack. Simply awful. Only try this if your time is worthless and you don't mind wasting it.

烂游戏
没故事,没目标,没意义。我花了20分钟盲目地走着走着,终于受不了放弃了。虽然是免费还是后悔浪费自己的时间。

Lovingly-made story-rich adventure game

You play various characters throughout this game, but mainly a sickly boy confined to a hospital ward. In the quest to come to terms with your own physical condition, you talk to other hospital patients and learn their stories, in the process understanding more about love and life.

Who this game is for
✔ Adventure game lovers
✔ Those who appreciate good storytelling and narrative flow
✔ People who like tearjerker plots

What this game has
✔ Content-rich story involving different characters
✔ Adventure game puzzles that need to be solved
✔ Tons of exploration involving many different scenes
✔ A few timed events where you need to beat the clock
✔ A few scenes with "enemies" that you need to avoid
✔ An optional room with bonus objects that you can find/buy as upgrades
✔ Beautiful original music composed by the developer herself

How this game may irritate you
✖ Story kinda cliche/predictable
✖ ...Yet still induces massive amounts of tears
✖ Some of the songs are way too "kiddy" and sound ridiculously amateurish
✖ Entire game is a bit too childish and kid-friendly
✖ Too much walking back 'n' forth over long distances to get/do stuff

TL;DR
While a bit childish in some places, especially some of the music which was painful to listen to because it sounded like your tone-deaf dad trying to sing you an icky bedtime song he just made up on the spot, Rakuen on the whole is a very rewarding experience that will probably leave its mark on you for a long time to come. Also, you'll need a whole box of tissue for the tears.

Gets boring really fast
With every stage, objects onscreen keep multiplying until they get smaller and smaller and thus more difficult to find. After a few minutes you've seen everything, and the objects eventually get too small to be found. Good for maybe 5 minutes' entertainment at best, then into the bin it goes for eternity, because no achievements, no story and no purpose means there's absolutely no reason to play on.

玩5分钟就腻了
前面几关太容易,后面又太难,玩一下觉得没什么意思,因为没有成就,没有故事,也没有目标。每一关需要找的东西也大同小异。太无聊,不推荐。

Far too basic to be of any use

Only 2 instrument tracks and 1 percussion track - totalling 3 tracks altogether, and nothing else. And each track is very sparse and barebones - you just have a few tones to choose from and those tones are not rich or ambient enough to bring sufficient depth to the song. You can adjust the reverb and decay but it doesn't make much of a difference. There are a variety of scales (even jazz modes like dorian, lydian and mixolydian) but again it doesn't change much because the bottomline is that you are given too few sound samples and tracks to work with.

If you're a professional musician you wouldn't touch this. If you are a beginner you may possibly find this interesting for 5 minutes until you realise you're never ever going to be able to make much out of this.

There are far better - and free - websites on the Internet that offer you easy-to-use music-making tools using Flash in your browser.

For professional musicians who prefer the touch of an acoustic piano, I wholeheartedly recommend the Yamaha Clavinova, which has been my instrument of choice since 2005. I used to be a demonstrator and performer for the CVP 300-500 series from 2005-09 so if you need tips feel free to ask.

I also make my own music, which is at http://soundcloud.com/pianogirlsingapore

Relatively well-made HOG with good storytelling

Main story: You play a detective tasked with finding out how and why children are being mysteriously taken from a village in Mexico.
Bonus chapter: As the same detective, your job is now to prevent a girl from being charmed by a phantom suitor, and investigate what is seducing the girls at a nearby boarding school.

The Good
✔ Smooth-flowing narrative that develops and concludes well
✔ Compelling story that drives you to find out more
✔ Cultural setting is done very well (Mexican backdrop)
✔ Story fits the cultural setting
✔ Beautiful, colourful graphics
✔ Music suits the context
✔ Puzzles mostly ok

The Bad
✖ 1 or 2 seriously stupid adventure puzzles: e.g. Who the hell uses a candle snuffer to put out a candle on BIRTHDAY CAKE! You could just blow it out, DUH!!!

TL;DR
Aside from the odd dumb puzzle here and there, this was mostly an enjoyable experience due to a well-crafted plot for both the main game and bonus chapter. The cultural context was integrated very well with the storyline. The game was well put-together and culminated in a satisfying conclusion.

Silly clicker game with fun achievements that mocks overpriced commercial bloatware that takes your money & wastes your life.

10-20分钟的搞笑游戏。成就蛮好玩。用键盘按还更容易。

A short 20-minute point-'n'-click adventure game with some frustrating & annoying gameplay mechanics that tries hard but doesn't quite get there

You play Clint, a detective who's returned to his old home in the English countryside to investigate the apparent suicide of his mother. Your job is to explore the house and find items which may clue you in on what really happened.

This would have been a much more enjoyable experience if the following were addressed:

1) Items need better click ranges. E.g. I wanted to examine a painting on a wall, but clicking on it did nothing. Instead you're supposed to click on the wall tile directly beneath it, and if Clint is not facing the correct direction, nothing will happen either. In other words, you have to click various times, and from various character angles, just to see if an item can be interacted with or not.

2) Some areas of the game are way too dark. I actually spent a few minutes outside the house in the opening part of the game, looking for a way to enter the house, because I couldn't find the door!!! Yes, it was that bad! Turns out the door was a black hole somewhere in the middle of the row of windows. It was completely invisible to me, and my screen brightness is set to normal. Later on in the backyard I also couldn't see the scarecrow, and had to completely rely on the text description to figure out what it was.
I wish developers would understand that GOOD horror games need not be dark in order to be scary, and that when players can't see what they're supposed to (e.g. the door, the scarecrow, etc), it's frustrating and anger-inducing, and not frightening. The horror comes from the build-up of plot tension and atmospheric cues such as sound, music, etc. Only cheap hacks need to make use of darkness to try to convey fear.
Typically, if I encounter a game too dark whose brightness settings I can't tweak, and that has absolutely no reason for being that dark, I bin it within the first few minutes - I play games to be entertained, not frustrated.

3) You have to physically walk to all corners of a room in order to see if there are any exit points. When Clint walks into a room, only the immediate area around him is visible - take a look at some of the game's screenshots to see what I mean. So unless you walk down to the bottom of the screen, for instance, you'll not be able to see if any exits are there. This is despite the room already fitting entirely in the screen. I suppose the creator of this game wanted to convey a sense of mystery or fear, but what is the point of doing this? The room has lights in it that are all on!!! And we can see that they're on!!! So why can we only see the extreme edges of the room only when we walk there??? It's not as if you're holding a candle walking around in a dark room ffs! It's just dumb. Please don't. Oh, and if you think making it this way (such that you can only see the exits when you walk there) makes the game scary, you're wrong. It just makes it frustarting and incredibly annoying to play. I could feel my blood pressure rise as I wondered why someone would deliberately make gameplay so eye-rollingly obnoxious.

4) Minimal puzzling involved. The game does it all for you. All you need to do is pick up items while you explore, and if you need to use it on something, the game will automatically apply the item for you. This goes for item combos as well - e.g. if you have Object A and Object B and both need to be combined, you don't have to figure that out because when the situation calls for it, as long as you have both these items in your inventory, Clint will automatically combine and use them accordingly. So all you need really be concerned with, is just picking up everything you can. There was only one "real" puzzle in the game which involved a number, whose solution was far too obvious.

5) Story needs much more depth. You're promised a mystery, but really, there is none. The plot was as straightforward and in-your-face as they go. Within moments of gameplay you already know what you're in for, and that's what you do get.

6) Narration needs to be tighter. When I came back to the store page to write this review, I realised that the "About This Game" section told me more about the introduction to this game than the in-game content did. How can you assume players will read the "About" section before playing the game? Shouldn't whatever details are in the "About" section on the store page also be in the game's introduction?! Otherwise, if you're going to leave it a mystery, don't put so many details in the "About" section because it makes players question why the game's overview in the store page tells them more about the game than the actual game itself!

Now, all that being said though, here's what I liked:

1) Small details in environments change as the story advances. After you trigger certain events in the plot, when you return to some locations, things have changed slightly. This kept things fresh and dynamic.

2) Build-up of plot tension is effective to an extent. As we learn more, there is a sense that something big is about to happen... although sadly the climax was a huge letdown. If the developer could make the payoff much better (e.g. through the use of plot twists, more dramatic conclusions, etc), the tension sit-out would be worth it.

3) Good English... mostly. There was an error in one of the sentences though. I can't remember which one, but the tense needed to be corrected or a few words added to make it grammatically sound.

Note to developer: Take a look at some of the award-winning games found at http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/awards/ - which are similar in style to what I think you were going for. Many of them are highly immersive, fun, memorable, offer a good adventure game puzzling experience, and have smooth narrative and flow - all without the use of annoyingly dark environments or locations that are frustrating to navigate, even the horror ones. And remember that darkness or inability to see stuff does NOT equate "horror".
