A must have for XCOM 2 fans!

As if XCOM 2's vanilla universe wasn't already enough (IMO it should be) this DLC manages to add a ton of new things into the game but... without making it feel as if you've been left out. Unfortunately... if you pick up and play this DLC it'll mean you're going to have to start all over from scratch because if you're already nicely into the vanilla campaign then... well... this DLC doesn't add onto the story in the sense of a "chapter 2" but instead it enhances the story as you already played it.

I can well imagine that this could be a bummer for plenty of players who will basically see all their progress get reset back to 0: "Congratulations for finishing x amount of missions. Now get ready to do them all over again!".

Massive improvements on vanilla though...

Does it really make sense that all humans basically got enslaved and no one managed to break free? No, it doesn't. Which is exactly one of the gaps that this DLC will fix. Enter the skirmishers; a faction of ADVENT soldiers who managed to break themselves free of their masters control and who have decided to take revenge on their former masters.

That adds to atmosphere...

Then add a lot of improved maps, new missions and even new ways in which your soldiers will cooperate with one another (when a soldier is fighting a lot with certain team mates they become more comfortable around them, and that will eventually give them bonus abilities whenever they're playing with that same specific team).

War of the Chosen took the standard XCOM 2 game, and brought it to even higher standards, something that would seem impossible to do. But it happened.

As mentioned above: I believe that this DLC is a 'must have' for XCOM 2 players.

The map "editor" is a joke!

I have a seriously soft spot for games that provide a mission or level editor, for the simple reason that this gives you a lot of creative control over how you're going to play the game. Now, I basically bought XCOM 2 + all DLC in one go because I wanted to take it to the max. Only later did I learn that this DLC was suppose to provide a "map editor" so I looked into that.

What the developers call an "editor" is nothing more than a customization feature: it allows you to customize some aspects (not all!) of a skirmish game. Pretty much standard in "other" games. So: you can customize your troops and those of the enemy, customize load out and you can select a specific game type. But here the ridiculous limitations immediately reveal themselves: certain mission types can only be played on certain map types. Rescuing a VIP from an Advent (= hostile aliens) vehicle? Can only be played in the City Center map. Neutralizing a target? Only the city center is at your disposal. Sorry, but that's pathetic. Why can't I neutralize a hostile target in the slums, or an abandoned city?

Fear not: there's still hope!

I hope I made myself clear: do not buy this DLC in hopes of getting a map editor. Because you don't get that, far from it.

Fortunately it's not all bad and thus I can keep my recommendation set to 'yes', though I'm obviously seriously disappointed over what I consider to be a false promise of getting an actual editor. (I'll shut up about that now ;))

What makes this DLC still worth getting are a ton of new missions, gorgeous looking new maps, a story to explain what happened between XCOM and XCOM 2 and.... it actually adds something fun to an already fun DLC (War of the Chosen): pictures! Or better put: a new way to spread positive propaganda about XCOM in an attempt to attract people's attention, hopefully enough to have them join you. You'll even be able to make posters and such from your favorite characters. And that's not all: they're exported to your harddisk so that you can even enjoy these snapshots outside the game, maybe share them with your friends?

In conclusion....

Promising a map editor and then delivering nothing more but a severely limited way to customize a skirmish game is honestly a bad joke in my opinion. It's pathetic. Fortunately the DLC also provides a lot of new and challenging missions, remastered maps and even cool ways to boost morale in your regular single player campaigns which makes it well worth it I think, because it really gives you a lot more fun things to do within the XCOM 2 universe.

What's bad about this, IMO, is that you can only use this DLC if you already own yet another DLC, namely 'War of the Chosen'. The reason I dislike that is because I think that some parts of this DLC such as the skirmish game mode should have been part of the base game from the getgo. Especially considering it's hefty price.

And I will say this one last time: do not buy this DLC hoping to get a real map editor, because you don't get that.

A seriously good game but... a tad' expensive

XCOM 2 is a strategy game with turn based combat and seriously impressive cut scenes. The story evolves around an alien force which has taken over the Earth. Although they pretty much control everything there are resistance forces scattered here and there. And then there's XCOM. An armed force who managed to take control over an alien vessel from which they coordinate a wide variety of missions in order to drive the aliens off our world.

The storyline and atmosphere of this game is truly astonishing. It even reminds me of the 80's hit series 'V' even though this game isn't related to that other than the similar story of Earth being overtaken by aliens.

And the turn based combat is definitely convincing. Not only do the levels look detailed and gorgeous, the game really gives you full control over your actions. Yes, strategy is of vital importance here but that doesn't mean that you don't get to do some mindless mowing every once in a while ;) But... planning your strategy and trying to think ahead really pays off.

I personally also enjoy the dose of realism. If your troops got shot during a mission then they will have to recover before they're sent back in, otherwise it would be suicide and that's not acceptable. Yes, this mechanic can be explained as a game mechanic meant to make things more difficult ("if they can still fight in the mission after being shot, why wouldn't they be able to fight in the next mission?") but you got to admit that it does make sense to let wounded soldiers heal up first.

But as mentioned I can well imagine that some players will be a little hesitant with picking up on a 3 year old game (at the time of writing) which normally sells for a triple-A pricing. And that's excluding the DLC! This game is definitely a bit expensive. Honestly? A Steam sale might be the best strategy for picking this up, but having said that I also think that the normal price, though a bit high, can still be justified because of the games overall quality. Even having the DLC doesn't completely mess up the new player experience, which so many other games usually do.

Full control

This is what I enjoyed the most: my game, my troops, my command so my strategy. Of course I got pretty much butchered during my first mission when I discovered that the aliens could revive their troops. The second run however I knew what I was going up against so I made sure to have 2 soldiers concentrate on taking out the "reviving alien" while the others concentrated on the primary objective as well as the rest of the opposition. That strategy actually paid off!

What I like about this is that Youtube clearly shows that many players approached this mission in many different ways. Which goes to show you that us players are truly in full control over the type of strategy we'd like to use.

This game style is probably not for everyone!

If you're considering to pick up this game then be well aware that it has 'strategy' written all over it, though I think the turn based combat is probably the biggest aspect to get used to. When out of combat you're commanding an alien battleship which provides many hidden features. So.. prepare to assign researchers to help you uncover the mysteries behind all the alien technology, engineers can help you develop new weapons and equipment and even get more out of your ship, and no: it doesn't stop here...

Earth is being overrun but unity will be your best weapon against the invaders. So... contacting local resistance forces and persuading them to aid your cause will become an important part of the game as well. Of course that's assuming you can find them, which will become a task in itself.

And then there's the combat. I love this part... Turn based, meaning that your team and the enemy faction(s) don't play their moves at the same time. First you move your troops into (strategic?) positions, then the enemy will get their turn. And as one could expect: you'll be dealing with both a fog of war (= undiscovered terrain is hidden) and enemies which will be invisible to you until one of your troops actually spots them.

Yes: this means you could wander into an enemy trap if you're not careful. However... it also means that you could easily set up the same! In a later mission I had my team escort someone to a meeting ground. I specifically moved the team with 2 soldiers ahead and one guarding their flanks. Result? When they got attacked from behind the enemy didn't anticipate for my "German trump card"; the soldier I held back at the rear to guard my troops.

But don't think for a second that this "turn based stuff" means that you can't get any action.... you'd be surprised! I had my forces shoot on enemy troops who were in motion. So basically: my team spotted an enemy soldier running to get into their position and they opened fire (both of my troops!). The camera obviously caught this perfectly and for a moment it looked like I was watching a slow-motion action scene from a shooter game!

There's plenty of action, but there's also a large dose of strategy involved to get the most out of those moments of action. And that might take getting used to.

XCOM lives

'nough said ;)

Still... "Back in the day" of my Commodore 64 I used to enjoy playing a game called "Laser Squad". You might have guessed it: a turn based strategic combat game. You were leading a team to complete a specific mission, for example an assassination. The graphics were nothing like we have now, the gameplay (in comparison) was mediocre (even turning around would cost you action points!) but it still was an awesome strategy game.

If you ever played this game for yourself and enjoyed it then I can assure you that you're going to love XCOM 2.

Kerbal Space Program just got a whole lot better!

A rocket slowly approaches Mun (the moon)... It turns around and begins to make its ascend descend towards the surface. An engine is fired to slow it down some more and after a few more minutes the craft has finally landed. Another player has yet another achievement to put behind their name, but what is going to happen next? Will the player allow the kerbal to exit the spacecraft and enjoy their time on the Mun or will the player abandon the game to do other unimportant things like eating or sleeping? Why I ask? Well, ask yourself this: what else than walking around is there to do on Mun anyway?....

But all of that changes with this DLC, prepare to say goodbye to some good sleep for a while ;)

This DLC will make it much more interesting to examine (and explore!) the planets you can find in the Kerbol universe. What was once a completely empty planet will now be a surface area where you can actually find some specific features. Things like a crater or a volcano, maybe you'll even come across some special rocks....

Of course we'll need some proper equipment so that we can analyze and study all of this and fortunately that is included as well. If you install this DLC you'll get a new "Robotics" tab in the editor where you'll find several components to help you automate your builds using things like servo's, hinges and rotors. Or what to think of a scanner arm which you can place on a rover? Next we also get a bunch of deployable scientific components as well which can help you study your environment and collect valuable data.

Now we'll need more than rocket science alone!

I'll bet this is all a plot by the kerbals! See, thanks to this DLC us poor players not only need a dose of rocket science to actually get out into space; in order to conduct some of these scientific experiments we're also going to need actual kerbal scientists to help us out! Conspiracies I tell you! ;)

But all joking aside... I think this DLC truly puts the icing on the figurative cake and can expand your KSP a whole lot more!

The time to get more serious is upon us! Now... if you'll excuse me, one of the kerbals has volunteered to crash land a plane into Kerbin so that we can test if all these gizmo's actually work. What's that? Remote control you say? Naah, we can't trust Probodobodyne's components just yet since we haven't figured out how to put one of our scientist kerbals inside the Stayputnik in order to verify that everything actually works.

Yes, the life of a kerbal overseer is a difficult one ;)

Mixed feelings, but I'm still very positive!

This is a somewhat difficult review for me because although I am pretty excited about this DLC myself I can also fully understand why other players might not be so happy with it. The problem is that this DLC adds some very specific features to the game, features which you could end up not using at all! That'd be a waste, right?

First things first... If you're a "sandbox player" who wants to get the most out of Kerbal Space Program ("KSP") then my suggestion is plain & simple: get this DLC, especially during a Steam sale. At the very least it'll add plenty of interesting new components for you to use and some of those are actually pretty amazing. For example the Mk2 command pod which allows 2 instead of 1 kerbal to operate your spacecraft. Or what to think about the re-entry modules?

All parts of this DLC are based on existing space technology as mostly used in the 70's and 80's by both the USA and USSR, so if you want to build some more realistic rockets then.... here's your chance!

Missions & builder

The standard KSP game provides you with several challenging scenarios which you can play. This DLC adds a whole load of missions and combines that with a real mission editor. Now, I've only recently begun to mess with the editor so I'm definitely no expert. But I have already seen enough to be certain that I'm going to be having a lot of fun with this. A lot of good that's going to do you, right? ;)

More seriously: the editor isn't perfect and definitely has its quirks. But it can be a really fun option to make some of your roleplay come across as more official. Meaning? In sandbox mode you could set yourself up with a "mission", for example to build and deploy a satellite and then use that to obtain "valuable information". Of course in the end it's all roleplay because no matter what you do the end result will always be the same.

That's where this editor could help... it allows you to set some goals for the mission and the only way to officially finish is by actually completing those goals. Ergo: it'll be an actual challenge instead of simple make belief.

As for the missions; most of them are based on events that actually happened in the past years. This is where the 'history' in "Making history" comes into play ;)

Summing up...

If you're a die hard builder then this is definitely a good pick. Plenty of interesting new components and building materials, a mission editor to create your own challenging missions and a large selection of pre-made missions for you to go through yourself.

However... if you're mostly playing in career mode then I could imagine that this DLC might end up a little underwhelming. Because you might not be that much interested in playing other missions or even trying to build one yourself. Your mileage may vary as the saying goes.

Hope this can help some of you!

Like playing in a fish tank :(

I've been playing C&C ever since the very first release, and my favorite C&C game to date (which deals with GDI vs. NOD) is still C&C Tiberian Sun (together with the Firestorm expansion). I got this game on Steam because I wanted to complete my collection (and the price was a steal during a sale) but honestly? I can't recommend this game.

The graphics look horrible. No, the details themselves are gorgeous but the developers overdid it big time. Yes, I realize that we're playing in a tiberian infested world. But that's no reason for what I assume to be cloud patterns to constantly roll over your screen. If you look at the distorted light you'd almost think you're playing on the bottom of the ocean! I guess it's almost a matter of time before Spongebob makes an appearance.

Cringy voices for veteran C&C fans

If this is your first encounter with the C&C franchise then this section will probably not apply to you. In all honesty I think the voices in the game aren't too bad. NOD soldiers really sound like like the fanatics they're supposed to be and that's a good thing where atmosphere is concerned. The problem though... I compare this to older games in the franchise and then you start to notice how stupid the whole thing actually sounds.

Lemme explain: when you select units on the field they usually respond with a comment. Same if you give them orders. Well... "We fight for NOD!" makes me facepalm. NOD soldiers are devoted, sure, but they were never so stupidly fanatic. It also doesn't help that they yell this when I only gave them an order to move. No battle has ensued at this time, so... errr, wha?

Decent AI though, and fair gameplay

The title says it all. The AI is nice, and I also think they skirmish mode has been severely improved; you can play free for all games against the AI and you're in full control. Which is a good thing. And as I said: the AI is decent. You can even make it rush, take its time, or go all out in a frenzy, despite my negative opinion it would be unfair to deny that this helps improve gameplay.

And the campaign itself... it's fair. Decent movies, ditto story and yeah; it's the "old" C&C but in a modern jacket.

In conclusion...

I'm going to wrap this up a bit quickly; in the end I don't suggest buying this. If you're really interested to get a good dose of C&C then you should try and get your hands on C&C Tiberian Sun. An old and dated game, but still very true to the C&C universe. OR... Unfortunately Tiberian Sun isn't available on Steam, but the next best thing is the "spin off" C&C Red Alert franchise; here the story dives into the USSR invading the USA. As crazy as it may sound: Red Alert 3 is what C&C 3 should have been. ... not a fishtank, that's one positive ;)

Hack & slash with a dose of fanservice!

Disclaimer: don't let my short playtime on Steam fool you with regards to my experiences with this game; I have played this game to hell and back (almost literally ;)) on my PS3 and the main reason I haven't been playing it as much on PC is because I have tons of other games to enjoy as well.

But yeah, if you're into the classic hack & slash type of games then I'm sure that Bayonetta is going to be tons of fun, because this game is honestly a classic of its own. A bit absurd, totally over the top here and there and it has an intriguing (but maybe a bit shallow) story as well! And if you're not into this genre then... you still might want to pick it up anyway when it's on sale because this game experience is honestly something else.

Besides the hack & slash fighting you're also going to have to solve some puzzles, get your character better weapons and equipment, use everything you find along the way to craft new helpful items which can boost your health, strength and some can even make you invincible for a small period of time and... you can play the video game "Angel attack" :)

This game has 'silly' written all over it, which makes it so much fun!

Bayonetta is a powerful witch who practices the dark arts. She also has no problems flaunting her feminine features which is also where the fan service comes into play. And I definitely need to warn you because this will be all over the place. Nothing over the top in my opinion but still hard not to notice. From kicking an enemy and immediately posing after that for a specific photo snap right down to using her hair (which she normally uses for clothing) to attack enemies with a really powerful finishing move. Where does this leave her clothing you ask? Exactly ;)

During the game she takes on a fight with the light side: angels sent from the heavens. And as you progress through the game you will encounter more powerful enemies where every boss has a specific feature to overcome. To counter for all this you can upgrade your weapons and even get better and other types of equipment. And Bayonetta sure likes her toys! Just having 2 pair of guns even isn't enough for her: instead she also wears a pair of guns on her feet as well. You know: for that extra force behind a kick ;) And when you take on the bosses you're going to need all the help you can get!

And boy do those bosses look impressive.. Fortitudo for example: a gigantic winged dragon which also has a giant upside down face in between which it can use to speak. Those bosses are huge. Which also means that taking them down usually requires something I like to refer to as a "staged fight". During your fight you take down smaller parts of the boss to weaken it and if you weakened it enough you can eventually finish it off entirely.

The story, which I obviously won't spoil in my review, is a bit shallow but still very entertaining. Just keep in mind that you will have to deal with plenty of commonly used plots. The main protagonist who is trying to recover their memory, forces of light and dark or 'good and evil' if you will where even the whole definition of what's good or evil is taken for a ride. Add in a bit of a small romance, a young child who can't miss their stuffed toy and of course a mysterious "frenemy" who seems to follow you where ever you go.

This game even has 'cheats', but fully legitimate ones which are actually a part of the game itself! All you have to do is go out and find them :)

Summing up...

I spend hours on Bayonette on my PS3 and I plan to pick up the pace soon enough on PC. Sure, hack & slash types of games aren't for everyone, but despite all that I still think you may find Bayonetta to be a pleasantly surprising change anyway. The game is already very affordable with its normal price but whenever we have a Steam sale then this is honestly a steal. A few bucks for a game that's bound to give you hours of enjoyment and even has a good replayability value?

Must have for Arma 3 players!

Although I don't necessarily agree with some critics about the contents of this DLC I do agree that the price seems a bit hefty if you take into consideration that you mainly get 2 helicopters and a specific gameplay mechanic to use them. Still... the DLC pack can make things more manageable and we also have Steam sales.

And honestly? Although I fully admit to being biased (Arma 3 is one of my favorite games) I also think this DLC is well worth the price. Though once again: DLC packs are a thing, and those are very good value for your buck.

What is this all about?

Helicopters, yah duh! ;)

Actually the ability to fully use them. Don't forget that Arma 3 is a sandbox game first and foremost which means that you're going to want to get some toys to use in your sandbox. Like this DLC.

But yes, this is about having helicopters in the game but also giving them new advanced abilities. You can now actually use a chopper to pick up cargo (like a vehicle) and then transport that vehicle to a new destination. It sounds simple enough (flying in Arma is a trade in itself!) but it opens up soo much new cool abilities for your missions!

Think about it... your squad is on an island preparing an invasion to liberate a nearby village from some terrorists. You go in by boat and once you and your team have set up a foothold a helicopter flies in a vehicle for you to use. That's the kind of stuff I'm talking about! Add the Eden editor into the mix and you'll be making your own missions too!

But always remember: Arma 3 is a sandbox game, which means that DLC such as this will be at its best once you try to get the most out of it yourself (like making missions with the Eden editor).

Don't forget sales!

I heavily respect Bohemia for the stuff they do / did and part of that are the sales. Don't despair: this item has been on sale quite a few times so if you're reading this outside a sale period: patience. Though I'll say again: in my very honest (but maybe slightly biased) opinion this DLC is even worth its normal price because of all the fun extra stuff it opens up for you.

Thanks for reading!

It's like Minecraft in space!

I'm having so much fun with this that I just had to give a shout out; this game is a true Steam classic if you ask me. If you like playing Minecraft then I'm quite positive that you're going to love this as well. Maybe a little bit more difficult (then again... redstone can be tricky too!) but oh so rewarding!

So what's this all about? Well, as its name suggests this is about sending small people ('Kerbals') into space by building & designing rockets which will (hopefully) make it into orbit. Remember: what goes up must come down and you might want to prepare for that ;) What makes all this so much fun though is that you can make things as easy or as complex as you want to. And even in 'Sandbox mode' (which is where you gain full access to everything and can do whatever you want) things can still be quite challenging!

My first rocket actually made it into orbit... "sorta" because once it lost its velocity due to Earth Kerbin's gravity it quickly started to decent and that was when I realized that I might want to look into a way to disconnect the rocket from the cabin with the kerbals, and having a heat shield of some sort seems like a good idea too :)

But honestly... that moment when you actually manage to launch your kerbals and then make sure they get back to the surface in one piece? Priceless!

You could actually learn something from all this too!

This is the fun part: the environment (the home planet, gravity in space, etc.) is all based on realistic data. So when you shoot your rocket into space (or.. trying to ;)) then you're actually dealing with a dose of realism. Trust me: you will soon realize that it will take more than simply launching a rocket into space before you actually reach a point where you can stay in orbit.

And that's when the real fun can begin because why settle for one spacecraft? Why not start designing rockets which can transport parts into space so that you could build your own space station? And once you have that: maybe allow other craft to dock with it? That could be a nice starting point to begin exploring the rest of the Kerbal universe.

That's right: it's not just about Kerbin ("Earth") and it's moon ("Mun"): there are more planets you can explore and it will take you plenty of strategy and (somewhat) skilled designs before you'll be able to reach those!

Comes with a mission editor too!

(edited): Bzzt... the mission editor is only provided by the 'Making history' DLC. So not part of the standard game, I obviously got a bit confused there.

Full Steam support too!

This is the part I really enjoy: you can easily share all your designs on Steam or use already existing designs in your own games. Making this a true classic if you ask me!

Summing up....

I'll be honest: I've had my eyes on this game for a while now but the somewhat steep normal price always made me a little hesitant. Especially if you take the DLC into consideration as well, which also has its own costs. Is it worth the normal price? It's hard to tell for me (I picked it up during a Steam sale), also because KSP is a rather specific type of game. Building spacecraft and sending them into space, optionally expanding with building whole space stations (or maybe a whole space colony) are all possible scenarios. But it will take plenty of time and effort, even in sandbox mode, before you'll get there.

I'm easily seeing myself spending plenty of hours in the wonderful world of KSP, just as I can already see myself taking a break from it because I want something different for a change.

Having said that I am definitely a believer. This game is amazing and can provide you with tons of fun and laughs. Maybe even some sad moments too when you were really focussed on bringing your kerbal friends home alive which ended in a some freak accident.

This is a seriously bad Sudoku game. It doesn't even support the most basic requirement of playing Sudoku: being able to make notes of possible numbers. All you can do is place a number and that's it. It also doesn't help that you apparently don't get a generated Sudoku puzzle but get to pick from 80 options ranging between easy, medium and hard.

Ergo: you only get 240 Sudoku puzzles here. Is this honestly the limit of the Unity engine? I find that hard to believe....
