Early Access Review
When I played the demo for this game, I wasn't impressed; about one year later, and this feels like a completely different and better game!

The physics feel a lot more accurate, the enemies/bosses have more depth and interesting design elements, and the boards themselves have more variety.

Would recommend especially on sale, even with some downsides like: there only being 3 stages, major art/graphical issues (though it's still a big improvement over the demo), and the narrative being unclear to say the least

I'm currently only 2hrs into the game but I'm loving it so far. It's definitely on the more relaxed side, but there's a lot to unpack in terms of story, mechanics, and so on, especially since none of it is directly explained (primarily explained through NPCs early in the game). Overall it definitely feels like a very good polished game for $20, especially if you like story-based RPG games like Paper Mario, Undertale, etc.

Pros:
- Amazing character design
- Engaging story and believable characters, even if some of them initially feel a little shallow
- Paint the entire world persistently, which may or may not appeal to you depending on how "creative" you are
- Paintbrush mechanics are very fleshed out
- Good soundtrack

Cons:
- No enemies in between points, leaving you with only relatively simple environmental puzzles
- Lots of times you'll find random "gifts" throughout the environment, which usually just contain random cosmetic items. I'm not sure if these serve a purpose later on (i.e., wearing the right clothes gives you access to special locations or new dialogue, or acts as "armor")
- Could have better pacing with the combat portions. I definitely feel like there could be more minibosses.

This entire game is just soy Reddit bait. "OMG it's non-Euclidean geometry!" "OMG perspective puzzles!"

Sadly, none of this amounts to anything unless you make a good game out of it--and this game isn't good gameplay-wise or narrative-wise. The puzzles aren't fun and play out exactly the same. The narrative amounts to the most rudimentary explanation of recursion bundled up in a pretentious monologue even worse than Bennett Foddy. Simply don't buy this game unless it's in a deep sale (50% off at least).

Here is my impression after playing the game for about two hours:

Patch Quest feels amazing to play, both moment-to-moment and over time. Think of a twin-stick shooter, but with much more mechanical depth and more engaging gameplay systems, such as upgrades, mounts, and so on. There are also overarching exploration and quest objectives that give you a reason to immediately want to jump back in. Even though the game is in early access, it feels very polished and refined--definitely have to recommend to anyone on the fence.
