The game is classic, dungeon crawling that usually focuses on the experience of exploring dungeons, mapping (on graph paper, if you're going full old-school!), and gathering loot and getting stronger. Though the included Five Ordeals are not at all well suited for novice adventurers, there is a lot of additional content, some official and some fan-created, that can be accessed and enjoyed even if you aren't highly familiar with the series.

It, to a fault, sticks very closely to the gameplay and options of the first few Wizardry games. The mechanics for creating, adding, and manipulating party members both in the city and in the dungeon is not particularly intuitive or elegant -- similar to how they worked in the old games decades ago. While there is a basic scenario added post-release that tries to act as a tutorial and introductory dungeon, it can't cover up the fact that the interface itself is notably awkward and archaic.

But these issues aside, the reason to get this game is to crawl through dungeons. Make your party, gather them at the Inn and send them through the town gate to head into dungeons to slay monsters and get loot, heading back to town to rest, recover and level up. Repeat. Get lost within twisty halls, learn which monsters are most dangerous and plan how to deal with them, learn spells that increase your firepower and defenses, kill a big baddie, recover a lost treasure, maybe unlock a new path to tougher dungeons, this game tends to be story-light -- focusing on the mazes, monsters, treasure and encounters and how you deal with them.

One notable detail is the game auto-saves. If you use an item accidentally on the wrong person, it's gone. Failed to revive a fallen ally, too bad. Teleported into solid rock or into a room with no exit door? Time to make a new party. Though, there is a 'secret' key combination that can be used in a bad situation, so if you really don't like what is going on, you can 'reset' the game to reload from the last auto-save.

Now while cheating the system like that might seem like heresy to some, for some of the scenarios... well. They don't pull any punches. Certain enemy encounters are incredibly deadly and recovering a party that was wiped out involves going back in with other adventurers, and is very risky, dangerous and inconvenient. Worse than simple dying are monsters that drain your experience levels, undoing hours of work, or permanently losing a cherished character. But it lends a sense of urgency and tenseness that you don't get with a simple respawn checkpoint or a Reload from Last Save menu.

So it can be hard, ok. What makes this different from other retro dungeon crawlers?

I'd say, it's the user content. There are a large amount of scenarios designed by various Japanese Wizardry fans, many translated into English, and each one has their own set of mazes, monsters, loot tables and items. Some are basic and fairly easy, some are incredibly large and intricate, and some are incredibly hard and punishing -- making the stock "Ordeals" look tame by comparison. You could easily spend weeks exploring some of the largest custom scenarios, You could go through a scenario with a heavily changed magic system, or find one that gives you incredibly powerful loot, or one that caps your experience gain -- leaving you relying on equipment and gear over grinding up numbers to get stronger. Note that due to these sometimes heavy differences it is not possible to import characters between any scenarios -- each one will be a clean start from level 1.

I have not dabbled in scenario creation myself, but do note that the scenario editor is not fully English ready and is web-based, and requires a Steam login. Be wary that due to copyright issues, using names or content from other Wizardry games is strictly prohibited.

Overall the Five Ordeals is a game package that by itself is kind of a tough sell for the price -- the fantastic Prisoners of the Battles DLC is excellent but tacks on even more of a price tag. It is the well-made custom content -- user created scenarios in particular -- that really help extend and elevate its appeal. If you're looking for some classic dungeon crawling in the vein of the first few Wizardry games, give this a look.

Relatively short VN, you can plow through in a handful of hours if you're reading fast. Solid writing and likable characters with a great overall presentation. For the entry price of free? Definitely impressive.

It's more Doom. It loads way faster than the last game, now THAT felt like Doom Eternal (loading) which made dying annoying as Hell. Now, if I have to redo a section it loads up and is ready to play in seconds. Still haven't beat the main campaign, but if you liked the feel of the previous Doom Reboot, this is pretty much more of the same.

Very easy to get engossed in building a base and losing track of time. Lots of mod potential to help flesh out the basic mechanics. Lost far too many hours and destroyed my sleep schedule due to this game. Beware.

edit: 2000+ hrs later

Still very easy to get engrossed in base building. Lots of mods to tweak the game and make your own scenarios or insane Fun. Yeah.

Played this for close to 600 hours, online and offline, since the game came out on PC. It received many updates since its release date of 2011 and and has such an almost overwhelming amount of content that you could play for weeks, online or offline, exploring worlds, building homes and palaces, or fighting off enemies. Note that, in this game, the focus is much more on fighting enemies, so if you don't like sidescrolling action games much, this game might not be your cup of tea -- it gets hard, and you can make it even harder if you so choose to.

If you've enjoyed games in the so called 'metroidvania' genre that involve exploration, upgrading and improving your character's abilities, and fighting stronger monsters with various weapons and techniques, Terraria is an easy recommendation.

Given the early press which focused on the uninspiring multiplayer, I wasn't expecting this game to be very good, but it turned out to have a solid singleplayer campaign, with a lot more vertical movement and jumping puzzles than older Doom games and a focus on set arena fights over clearing out pockets of enemies or ambushes. There are secrets, powerups, and upgrades to find and use, some of which are nods to classic games while others are just plain entertaining to discover. The game also seems to want to be placed on sale quite often, and if you aren't squeamish and are prepared to shoot, punch, and chainsaw demons and explode them into item pinatas, I can't recommend the game enough if it's on discount.

Well, I do have to say the game is fairly demanding and is prompting a refresh of my years-old computer, so while it does have large vistas of alien planets, hellish chasms and tech bases it can push older hardware to their limits. It is also pretty annoying waiting for the game to reload if you die.

Overall though, considering the amount of saturation the genre has had over the last decade, it's almost refreshing how well the developers managed to create something that not only held true to many of the design aspects of past games but managed to make a game that feels great to play even now.

A lot of buzz about this game. By now if you know anyone who played it already you probably have seen eight million meme pictures and have been spoiled on most of the major plot points. Oh well, game's still pretty cool.

I picked it up and throughly enjoyed it. Music's excellent. Humor is too, though that's always subject to personal taste. And of course, there's the whole morality lesson tied into things, which manages to be very effective and can present a harder obstacle to overcome than any boss fight.

If you have a functioning sense of humor then I recommend this game. Or a working pair of ears. If you have a pair of eyes that would probably be very helpful too. Good use of ten bucks.

One of those artsy games with about as much personality as a sheet of drywall, it challenges your ability to tilt a square and bounce just right to pick up a power pellet, navigate reversed gravity around deadly obstacles without falling asleep at your keyboard. Load it up, go to sleep and then collect your steam trading cards and you'll get approximately the same experience as if you had played the game! Certainly not worth full price, unless the game suddenly has you sprouting wings and arming up with twin vulcan cannons to take out the dark hordes of glowy dots.

If you like physics based, minimalistic platforming where you have to carefully explore and maneuver just right to reach the goal, with a very light soundtrack to zen out to, then you might be a better match for this game than I. As it is, it feels like the kind of game you might play on your smartphone while on a two hour bus ride, compelling, but not so much that you're itching to jump back into it.

Like Asteroids except with a bunch of flails tied to your ship instead of a blaster. Actually pretty compelling. Alongside endless modes of varying difficulty, there are missions that get grouped up in batches of three, which alter the layout and spawn patterns of enemies and rocks, which can add or subtract from the overall difficulty.

An amazing deal for the October weekly sale. Buy it.
