So what should I say about my most played game of all time? After well over 3000 hours I can safely recommend Stellaris for any fan of the grand strategy and 4X genre. The game has its flaws but lets begin with the positive aspects. (There is a TL;DR at the very end because this is going to be a long one)

First off, the game has infinite replayability especially if you take mods into consideration. There is a huge and very skilled modding community that will let every scifi dream you can possibly have become true.

Even though Stellaris belongs in the grand strategy genre in which most games are rather complex and hard to learn this game actually is pretty easy and a good choice for people that want to explore this kind of strategy games. YES, there are many systems to learn in Stellaris from diplomacy to species controls, gene modding and so on but those systems themself are rather easy to get once you start learning about them. Its just the huge amount of things that are possible here that make newbies think the game is super complex while it really isn't. At least compared to other games of the genre I played in the past.

Every match in Stellaris is different from the one before and with mods that is even more true. The devs are also very active especially since the custodian team has been formed (They revisit older DLC, add content to them and also do some smaller patches). So there will be a lot more content to come in the future in addition to the huge amount that we already got!

Another big plus for me personally is the very open species editor that lets you create your own alien (or human if you want to) civilization. You can choose everything from how the species looks to how their government is formed, how their ships look and whats their background story. I have easily spend a few hundred hours in the species editor just to create custom empires/species to play with and against. You want a galaxy full of genocidal empires that are in constant war? Go on and create 20 fanatic purifiers, then set them to force spawn in the next game. You want a galaxy only consisting of human factions with different ethics? Sure that also possible. The amount of things you can do to customize your experience even without mod is huge. There is no 4X game to date that even comes close in that regard.

When you actually started your game a galaxy full of adventures and tales from the past awaits you. You can find old ruins of long forgotten civilizations, old technologies and so so much more. There are crisis empires, giant intergalactic wars and galaxy spanning federations and everything a true science fiction fan can dream of.

The amount of playstyles possible is also something I really enjoyed. You can be a peaceful diplomatic empire or an isolationist one. Enslave the galaxy, protect it or purge it. Be the borg and turn everyone into cyborgs or organic batteries. I could go on for hours about the possibilities Stellaris offers you.

But now to the negatives:

First off is the huge price tag. Not that I think it wouldn't be worth it lol. With the 3500+ hours I have spend in the game so far even double the price would have been a good deal but it certainly is still a lot. Sure you don't need all the DLCs from the beginning but some of them add such crucial stuff that you actually do need at least half of them and that is easily more then 100 bucks if there is no sale.

Other negative factors are the poor AI and performance in late game (something that is being worked on constantly and there are also mods that make the AI way more competitive even for a veteran like me).

Performance wise the game will most often lag in late game DEPENDING on your population settings. The dev have implemented a new "feature" a few updates before that basically makes it so that each new population unit will increase the time the next one has to grow (this values are customizable at the start of a new game) making pop growth in late game way lower then in the beginning. This effectively reduces the endgame lag because the total number of pops in the galaxy will be much lower but it doesn't really make sense from a logical point of view. The higher the population in my galaxy spanning empire is the faster it should grow in my opinion. But like I said, you can customize that and even turn this of if you doesn't like it too.

TL;DR:

Positive:
+ Infinite replayability
+ Super customizable experience all around
+ RP potential is huge in this game
+ The writing of some of the special events and anomalies really good
+ Every game is different from the one before
+ Super custom species editor
+ Huge and very active modding community (and community in general)
+ The game is still being actively developed and will be so for a long time
+ Compared to other games in the genre this one is rather easy to learn making it a good choice for beginners
-----------------------
Negative:
- Huge price tag that is even getting bigger in the future because of Paradox' dlc policy
- The AI is rather dumb
- The performance can be bad if play with a huge population but that setting can be customized
