A flawed but very enjoyable game: Resident Evil 5 is incredibly linear and fast paced compared to its precedessors, something that comes with major changes in the playing experience that can equally please and disappoint depending on your expectations or prior experience with the series.
The gameplay is very different despite keeping the same core mechanics, which are a complete regression from RE4. While traditionaly slow, the movement in RE5 is also clunky, awkward and unfit to deal with the game´s enemies and overall faster paced gameplay. They are more numerous, faster and eventually start using firearms which overwhelms you not so much as a test of skill but rather due to the limitations of the controls at your disposal, you are simply too slow both in movement and in actions to keep up with them: on your own.
This is because RE5´s novelty is the ability to play coop and the game is clearly desgined and incentivises playing with a partner. While overwhelming on your own, the overclock in enemy numbers and pace makes for an incredible coop experience that encourages agression and teamwork, the possible strategies and playstyles grow exponentially with 2 players (me and my partner went with a classic long range/short range team for example). This is also helped by the level design, this game´s biggest strenght and where I suspect most of the developing efforts went. The level design is fantastic: arenas feature multiple routes, elevation changes, positions valuable to different weapon users as well as more enemy spawns and angles where they can get around you, they put more pressure but so can you and this is completely fitting for the also vastly different tone of the game. The setting, the cast, the acting, the gameplay: saying that Resident Evil 5 is always at top speed may be an exageration but it never touches the brakes, it merely lets go of the throttle on occasion to give you and your partner a necesary breather.
In line with the overall tone, RE5 is shamelessly linear: while combat arenas are varied and sublimely designed, the routes in between each of them are glorified corridors with a couple of simple puzzle sections I assume are present mostly to appease fans. The linearity goes beyond the level design, a smaller unupgradable inventory, a cheaper economy system and the removal of a merchant character encourage you to get over with preparations as fast as posible to get back to shooting, punching boulders, and spamming voice commands.
I could easily slap the "only worth playing with a friend" label on this game, which I think is true. But I think RE5 has enough merits to stand out as a less elegant but still worthy entry in the series, it has the charm and slight self-awareness unique to Resident Evil and the additions to the overarching story are welcome and interesting. I can see why it´s devisive but I recommend to at least give it a try because while downright silly at times, Resident Evil 5 is defitely not soulless. Give it at least 7 minutes, if that´s all you can spare.

With some of the most satisfying gameplay I've ever experienced from an action game, Khazan really promises to be one of the reasons I won't be touching grass this year. The clean artstyle: both great looking while providing visual clarity combined with visceral eardrum porn sound design (greatsword heavy attacks my beloved) serve as blood-pumping foundations for a varied, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable combat loop that offers a spectrum of mechanics and playstyles that make you want to experience and master them for the inherent satisfaction they provide at their core. In short, this game does the basics of fun gameplay sublimely and draws you in despite the uninspired environments and generic premise. Can't wait to be The First Berserker.

As a fan of the Fate series, I consider this game the most polished Fate related game despite it not being my personal favorite. On its own, I'd say it's a very enjoyable albeit not excellent entry in the vast story-rich action/RPG sub-genre worth checking out if you're into that sort of experience.
The most accomplished aspects of the game lie in my opinion within its cast, setting and underlying ideological clashes, which are a staple of Fate stories. The characters involved knit a mesh of beliefs and personalities that make for very compelling exchanges and interactions. My highlight is the game's protagonist Miyamoto Iori, I think the people charged with developing his character deserve special credit for the patience shown in fleshing him out as for most of the time he is portrayed as a pretty generic videogame playable character with a pretty bland personality and a relatable but risk-free moral compass that a player can just step into with neither much struggle nor care. However the story, through its clearly intended multiple playthroughs calmly deconstructs his real motives and reason for his seemingly unassuming behavior and twist it into what I found to be a pretty fascinating outlook on life that perfectly fits with the real doctrine he followed in the real world, culminating in a refined mixture between authentic records and creative freedom signature of Type Moon's most celebrated works. Iori's servant is an excellent compliment to his evolution as well as being a wonderful character on their own with an endearing blend of a carefree mischievous demeanor concealing a tragic life.
The setting is utilized to the fullest and it intelligently integrates both new and familiar servants in a non disruptive manner, the most relevant servants all hail from Japanese myth and are novel inclusions to the series while recurring servants are relegated to the secondary rogue category. Allowing both gameplay and setting to benefit from the mixture of novelty and familiarity.
The game's presentation is memorable but flawed, the art style is simply superb with lead artist Rei Wataru successfully creating a new identity for this title not just as a game but as a universe within the whole of the Fate series. If Fate/stay Night is synonymous with Takashi Takeuchi and Fate/Extra with Wada Arco, Samurai Remnant is the Rei Wataru Fate.
This brilliant identity is however held back by the frankly mediocre technical aspects of the game's software, specially when it comes to environment graphics. The spectacle that are the character sprites and models is damaged by the muddy terrains and landscapes. A shame since even those are clearly made with care to replicate ancient Japanese scenery which they can if you overlook their dated graphical quality.
As far as the gameplay goes it's entertaining without impressing, a trend very much pertaining to all Fate games with varying degrees. This game has however the most engaging gameplay I've yet experienced from any Fate title as it constantly adds new systems and mechanics that while not particularly sophisticated on their own they add on to each other to make for a whole better than the sum of its parts complimented by very visually impressive special attacks. My only gripe with these is that late game additions to the gameplay make some of the early game systems obsolete which I see as a sign of more amateur game design.
All things considered, I think this was a very memorable story told through a competent game and I thoroughly enjoyed it despite its flaws. I'd say this is a must for any fan of the Fate series as this provides with a story the quality of which holds up to the Type Moon's standard with its own unique identity carved in the familiar and beloved setting of the Holy Grail War and I'd still recommend it to those who aren't fans of Fate but looking for a compelling story-rich game to sink their time into.

Solid driving engine ruined by a barely functional multiplayer system and a lifeless open world. Not to mention the developer is constantly sorrounded by controversy.

8.5/10 This game is just brilliant, gameplay and controls are top-notch, offering a lot of freedom and room for creative movement.
The art style and aesthetic is iconic and full of personality, characters and NPC's feel unique and are quite fun to fight and interact with.

However, performance can be inconsistent as large areas with lots of entities will have performance take a nosedive, forcing you to constantly change graphic settings if you always want a smooth framerate. Also, alt-tabbing can have the screen become completely stuck for a good 20 seconds, so if you wanna check something else while playing be prepared.

Still, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to just about anybody, a must have in my opinion.
