Honestly one of the best games I've ever played. A hidden gem that didn't get enough attention.

It is at times dramatic, heartwarming, uplifting, humorous and completely absurd and it all works.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon also touches on some serious social issues in a way that's organic to the game and setting without beating you over a the head with it. A recurring theme is the gray areas of society and the law and how and why people end up there.

The protagonist Ichiban I find a refreshing change to quiet surly dudes or someone trying to be a badass. He's earnest and genuinely wants to help in a way that makes running around and helping a bunch of random people with their problems make more sense than in most games. He's also over 40, happily runs around with a botched perm and is an unapologetic gamer nerd.

Likewise some of the companions are quiet different than what you would find in most games with one being homeless and another over 60.

The turn based combat works surprisingly well in this modern setting and through the protagonists imagination all sorts of elaborate and entertaining wacky battle techniques are able to be used.

Listening to various party conversation while running around town or eating at a wide variety of restaurants was another unexpected highlight for me.

There are A LOT of mini-games but mercifully for me since I am terrible at most of them they are optional and there's even a way to get some of the high end items from those mini-games, at a large premium, at a store late in the game.

If I had one quibble it would probably be that one of the party members was not involved in the story at all and felt tacked on (even though I used this person in my party a lot) but other than that this game is, ahem, Number 1 with me.

I didn't really know anything about this game or the series and went into it on whim but I'm very glad I did.

Farm Frenzy Hurricane Season is the latest in the long standing series to release on Steam. It's a pretty standard time management game with a farm theme. It doesn't do much that's new or innovative but what it does it does well and fans of the genre will enjoy it.

I thought the artwork was nice and found the game fun in short bursts. It starts out slow but can get pretty hectic later on.

For meeting the quickest time or getting achievements you get coins which you can in turn use in a slot machine to gamble for power ups.

Regarding the technical aspect it looks great running full screen, no pixelation, artwork is crisp and I experienced no bugs or problems.

If you're in the mood for a new time management game give this one a shot.

Finders is an addictive casual Time/Resource Management game that both feels familiar and manages to put its own unique spin on the genre.

In Finders you direct an expedition that crash lands while in search an artifact in order to help locate a lost hero. You're left to send survivors out to gather resources and build up the camp in order to continue the mission, which has 4 separate chapters.

Where Finders diverges from many other casual time management games is that it's area based rather than level based and you get to stay in one area for a long time. I found I liked this style of gameplay a bit better than hurrying through multiple levels as I felt more invested in gradually improving my camp and gathering resources since I would be there for some time.

You get a constant stream of mini goals that usually involve building or gathering resources and in some cases may even include short puzzles. Some of these will further the campaign along while others or merely optional goals to allow an opportunity to gain experience and levels.

The pace of the game is relaxed (with one exception; more on that later) and seeing the camp grow over time made the game fun and addictive for me. In addition to the building, upgrading and resource gathering there are a couple of mini-games.

Most notably is the mining mini-game which is done as a match 3 game. These segments are timed which and I found much more hectic than the pace of the rest of the game. It's worth noting though that they are mostly optional as there are few places in the game where you're required to do it to progress and there's no real penalty for not getting very far down in the game other than using some of your water resource, which is replaceable. You can also retry as many times as you like.

The other main mini game is fishing. It's a bit of a timing mouse click sort of mini-game that's pretty quick and fairly simple once you get the hang of it, but again this is optional and later in the game you get access to a boat you can use to gather fish without doing the mini-game.

One area I thought could have been handled a little better were the transitions between areas. You don't take money you've earned over. You can take your resources but you have to transport each resource separately by helicopter which is a bit slow and tedious as well as carries a per item fee, but you do get the option at least to bring some items over. It's all optional however as you can just as well play from scratch in the new area and there's some things you can do to maximize effeciency in transporting previous accumulations like buying up lots of the most expensive items and then selling them at the new camp.

Overall I really enjoyed Finders and found myself wanted to go back, build up my camp and progress through the campaign and its quirky story right up until the end.

Fun little level based puzzle game that's a bit of a different take on Match 3.

The premise may sound familiar, some birds are angry that their friends are kidnapped, this time by cats. Don't expect a physics game though. This is a straight puzzle game that plays closer to a match 3 though significantly different, and I would say more complex, than something like Bejeweled.

The staple of the gameplay is to remove birds of the same color from the playing field, a roof, by aligning three of the same color. You can do this in a row or in an L shaped corner. The trick is that a bird can only move where there's an open path, so no obstacles like another bird blocking it, and if you move a bird without making a 3 or more group match then more birds will show up on the playing field adding more obstacles. There are little eggs of different colors showing where the new birds will 'hatch' and sometimes you actually want to make a move that's not a match in order to get a bird of a particular color to appear so there's a bit of strategy to it all.

Other additions are made to the gameplay such as this cats, the 'Claws' part of the game, who you must surround on either side to fly them off the playing field, birds who are chained up and need a match to be released and hidden keys.

Note that some of the levels are timed as well but not all. Each level has different requirements so there's a lot of variety and you never quite know what to expect. I liked the unpredictability that you had other goals to meet besides simply rescuing the birds that varied with each level.

I was a bit apprehensive of the timed levels at first since I prefer to play puzzle and casual strategy games at a slower pace where I have more time to think out my moves but after a few tries I was able to get through them without much problem. It forced me to play in a bit of a different way for those levels which again I found to be a nice variety.

As with most level based casual games this is one where you don't need to make a huge time commitment and can play a level or two here and there in short bursts.

From a technical standpoint the visuals were all done well, looked great in full screen. I experienced no bugs errors or technical issues.

If you're looking for a puzzle game that's a little bit different and more complex than a simple match 3 and you like variety I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Claws and Feathers.

I was able to try this game out thanks to GamesMatter on Twitter. https://twitter.com/GamesMatterHQ

Super Win the Game is a retro platformer that really nails the 8-bit era Zelda II visual style with a bit of a different spin introducing a world map and non-linearity.

Pros
- Captures the NES Zelda II style perfectly. You really feel like you are playing a ROM from that era.
- Platforming is done well and sufficiently challenging.
- Overworld map let's you choose where you want to go in a non-linear fashion.
- Plenty of save points so you never have to backtrack very far.
- CRT filter is configurable and able to be turned off.

Cons
- There's really no game play beyond the platforming. I felt like it could have used a bit more to do and variety like combat and puzzles and so forth.
- Although the overworld is open and you can do it any order there are many areas are blocked off until you get a certain items resulting in a lot of backtracking.
- The $12.99 asking price is (subjectively) a bit high for what you're getting.

If you really love retro platformers Super Win the Game does it well with its own unique twists of overworld map and non-linearity. Just don't expect more than straight up platforming. While it may look visually like a near clone of Zelda II the dungeon portions actually play more like Super Mario Brothers.

I wish I could give a thumb sideways. I think the idea is great. As a proof of concept for a starting point to work on a more fleshed out game this could work very well. As it is though, I feel that fails both as a game and as satire.

It's very short. I'm talking a few minutes here. There's too much reliance on a random number generator and after a few tries I just got to the point of not caring what I picked because it all seemed just random anyway. There's also really not a lot to it. It's just Defender picks one of 4 responses to troll, hit enter, roll the RNG, rinse, repeat. That's pretty much it. The same responses tend to show up too so it won't take very long to start seeing repeats of what you already saw.

I'm willing to make allowances for games to be shorter, cruder and have less meat to them if their main point is satire, DLC Quest being a great example of this, but in this case it's just too short and too rudimentary. I really wish there were more to it but there's not.

On the satire end it seems to fall flat too. I think the combination of the satiring the White Knight complex of the so called 'Social Justice Warriors' being too subtle (a quick glance at the forums shows that many people didn't get that they were being satired and not celebrated) along with the opposing side always being portrayed as trolls for the sake of trolling just makes the whole thing not work.

As far as I am concerned, both sides take this subject matter and their role in it way too seriously and could well do with a mirror being held up. While true trolls exist, most people who get involved in these internet crusades do believe they are in the 'right' so not having the ability to choose both sides as a hero (in their own mind) seems to have the effect of making the whole thing come off as a SJW propaganda piece to many. Which it's not; having to 'retreat to a place where everyone agrees with you' is not exactly a quality to be celebrated but it seems many people don't get that far and just write the game off.

If you have to explain your satire then it really hasn't done its job.

Mostly though I just wanted more game. More to do. More from the opposition's perspective. Maybe planning and strategizing outside of the forum 'combat'. Something to make the game play last more than 5 minutes and be less random. Just more. The seed is there but it needs much more than this.

I'd love it if we could get updates or this could get much more fleshed out but as it stands I really hesitate to recommend it at any price. There are 99 cent mobile games that give much more game play than this and if you want Gamergate satire you're probably better off searching Google for an opinion piece article. It would take you longer to read than the time you would spend playing this game anyhow.

Nice time management / casual building and strategy game. It follows a formula along the lines of other such game but does a bit better job at mixing things up and constantly adding new game play elements than some other similar games.

There are 64 levels that have three different time goals to meet each giving progressively lower score, which in turn will effect how quickly you can meet several of the achievements.

Speaking of which, there 53 achievements in this game fully integrated into Steam which is more than most casual games tend to have. Achievement hunts will definitely appreciate that. I found that the achievements motivated me to keep going and to replay levels with different play styles that I might not have otherwise done.

Though it's not required, meeting the quickest time goal and getting all three coins for a level can be quite challenging and required a bit of planning and strategy. You'll probably have to replay a level multiple times to do that as you really need to run through each level at least once to get a feel for what works and what doesn't, particularly once you've dived in past some of the earlier levels.

Visuals are all really well done and look great in 1080p on a monitor. There's a story that's told between levels with narrated still cut scenes and also in text boxes by various island companions who are helping you on your journey. It's a nice touch be really the main thrust of the game is resource management and building and then optionally managing your time should you choose to challenge yourself or want to go for the achievements.

Overall I was pleased with MOAI and found good entry in the casual time management and building genre. If that's your cup of tea or you're looking for a lighter, low stress game to take a break MOAI would be a good choice.

Rescue Team is a casual time management game where the premise is you're overseeing a group of workers coming in to rebuild after a natural disaster. You play through 60 levels where you manage a crew appointing them to do various tasks within a short time frame, about 3-5 minutes.

There are two awards you can get for finishing a level. The silver is for finishing around 5 minutes and is quite easy to get while the gold you get for finishing around 3 minutes and is often trickier. If you want to play low stress you can easily do that just aiming for the silver medals and playing through the game. Getting the gold is completely optional and is a bit hectic but there's also more strategy involve since you will often need to figure out the best order to complete tasks in so that you can complete the level in a shorter time frame.

Personally I found that I often got silver on the first try, then once I got to know the level I'd go back and play for gold.

Visually the game looks quite nice. The 2D graphics are done well and everything is crisp and clear with no blur or pixelation like you may see on some older or low res casual games.

Another aspect of the game is you get a wrecked house to refurbish and slowly do that over time by earning money through completing missions. This gives you a sort of progress meter for how you're coming along in the game though I did wish a bit for more to that feature such as managing a rebuilt town. Perhaps in a future game.

I quite enjoyed Rescue Team and found it to be a well made game for the casual genre that has a nice balance between relaxing and some strategy. It can perhaps get a bit repetitive at times however it's a game that can easily be played in short bursts and come back to later so helps mitigate that. I did like that I could pick it up, play a few rounds and then just come back to it later.

For anyone who's a fan of casual games and light strategy I'd recommend Rescue Team as a fun, relaxing change of pace.

Fun little game. I found it to be sort of 3 parts rogue-like and 1 part Gauntlet. You basically fight swarms of enemies in procedurally generated level and then a boss at the end. That's about all there is to it but there's a wide variety of classes that you can unlock and upgrade that all play a little bit differently.

It's got that addictive just one more game quality and you can play it in short bursts. Dying is not a huge deal because you keep your money and can use it to upgrade so you still advance even through dying. It reminds me a bit of Rogue Legacy in that regard.

Chiptune music is nice and works really well with the game. The price is reasonable and I think fair for what it is.

Interesting Hidden Object Game. You either like them or you don't but as far as this genre goes I found this one to be well made and have it's own spin on things.

It uses actors in some full motion video superimposed over drawn backgrounds and it gives it a fun B-movie feel, with a plot centering around a mad scientist and overgrown carnivorous plants, as well as being reminiscent of some old 90s FMV games like 7th Guest and Tex Murphy.

There's 4 levels of difficulty here and at the hardest level you don't get hints or sparkles highlighting objects. I appreciated that as I have found some other Hidden Object games too easy in the past.

The puzzles I thought were varied, balanced difficulty neither being too hard or too easy and well done on the whole. Length is good for a hidden object game as some of them can be quite short, though perhaps I drew it out a bit by resisting hints.

It ran at full 1080p resolution on my monitor without any fiddling and there were no black bars on the sides or pixelation or any of that sort of thing you get with some older Hidden Object games. Graphics were all crisp and clean.

Overall I enjoyed Questerium and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone looking for a new Hidden Object game and appreciates a quirky, campy tone.
