If you were expecting the original Prey like me then prepare to be system shocked. Prey is basically Half Life 3. They didn't even try to hide this fact with the main male with the same name.

But after the slow start, what a glorious game this is. It feels unoriginal compared to the original Prey but if you just think of the game as a half life franchise you will enjoy it. Enemies are initially interesting then repetitive as with most games. Story is predictable but okay and due to the limitations of the location there isn't a big world building focus.

The gameplay itself is smooth like a Bethesda game so I don't get motion sickness like in other FPS say Borderlands series. The achievements contain spoilers but give you hints to different ways to replay the game. I would've enjoyed it more if they actually expanded on the original though but still a recommendation from me.

Early Access Review
Quake Champions is essentially quake still which makes it great. Due to the direction of games these days there are abilities for each characters which keeps the game up to date. The announcers have become UT like if you crave epic games before fortnite. I usually get motion sickness from modern games these days like BL but with quake I never seem to have this issue. Whether or not you wish to buy in game items or not doesn't affect the base game play.

23/11/2022 Edit: Australian servers need more players. Perhaps introduce smaller servers for places where there aren't many players like the old days.

If you have played borderlands before, this is borderlands. If you haven't played before, try one of their old games first. My own experience is that, yeap this is borderlands. However my experience with the connection to shift has been like uplay in the beginning when they took forever to fix their online network. They had six months to prepare for the steam launch and yet still there are problems of no connection or getting kicked out randomly dropping all players.

Update: They have fixed their shift issues since steam launch. (As of April 2020). I have also updated to recommended due to the fix.

It keeps getting better and better.

Edit with latest expansion: Game is still great and the devs are still updating the game play. They finally fixed the barbarian camp appearing!!!

Edit 2: They have now released a frontier pass. Although I haven't purchased it yet they are still updating the base + expansions so great work there developers. The pass is a bit expensive but I will likely buy it since they are updating the game.

edit 3: Frontier pass was worth it for all the extra civ and game modes. Still a few bugs to iron out but they are still patching it every now and then.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! It only allows you to play 720p. This is NOT a PC game. It is great to play this game at my eyefinity resolution (NB sarcasm here) and it only allows me to play at 720p which takes up 1/9th of the total screen area... Unplayable until Square fixes this and all the other issues. Plenty of other problems people are talking about like controllers not working properly. It looks like square did a lazy port over without actually doing any work or worse giving us a worse copy then the PS3 version (cutscenes of worse quality). Their excuse that they didn't release it on PC because of piracy, well this game on the PC version at time of release isn't even worth pirating.

Disclosure: I purchased a pre-order so I had no idea that this was going to happen.

edit: For those who say this is a whinge. This is what it looks like on my screen. http://sp.zhabite.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=324756528. You tell me if A6 sized gameplay is acceptable to anyone. And ask yourself why every other PC game works. I have over 246 games on steam and most of them work and without these problems.

update: they have fixed the graphics options finally. Will update this review once I play through to check if everything runs smoothly.

Could not play a more than a few hours of this game. Tried many years to get back into it and can't. Australia has a R18+ classification and still we have the censored version. DO NOT BUY.

edit: 22/09/2014
Yes! They have released a free patch for the uncensored version for us. Find it here.

I have made friends from this game that I'm still friends with even after 13 years. And what still binds us is the fact that this game set the standard for what a multiplayer game is all about. We cried together when we lost, we celebrated together when we were victorious, we laughed together sharing experiences and we loved each other when we get that kill. It is to frag or be fragged the times this game has made my heart scream in excitement of joy, of fear, of bloodthirst and of love.
