a good upgrade if you have, or are willing to upgrade hardware to run it, for reference, i own an RTX 3080ti w/ a ryzen 5 5600X.

i play this with the DLSS ultra-performance preset at 2160p on the high quality graphics option and it runs well, i get 45-60fps. ultra performance does make the game look a little blurry but it's a good compensation for getting premium framerate.

the takeaway from this is the lighting and reflections. from things as simple as ambient lighting down to the portals themselves, it is pure eye-candy. the improved assets are also a plus and definitely help make this feel next-gen.

my only gripe is it's very unstable and can crash at any point. near the end there was a point that would hard crash no matter what i did and i couldn't proceed, so i ended up going back to the original portal to finish it. i did try looking up solutions but came up empty-handed, however that is the only real issue i have.

due to how this game is fully path-traced (and therefore how insanely demanding it is) i feel this is more a side-comment than a true complaint, i wish it was a bit more optimized so it would run better on higher quality DLSS settings as well as the ultra preset setting, however this is something i can overlook as the game doesn't fundamentally look any different between high and ultra aside from an uptick in lighting precision.

if i rated this on a scale from 1-5, i would settle on a 3.75/5, all things considered. it might have severe issues and instability, for a free upgrade, it is great. while i never played the original portal up until the release of this upgrade, it's a positive improvement that retains the feeling the original provided. i hope they can do the same with portal 2. recommended.
