Loved this game! The art style is incredibly appealing. The difficulty curve felt good to me - grappling was hard at first, but I slowly got better and by the end of the game it felt really good to move through levels rapidly. And the length of the game was great - if you want a shorter experience, you can go straight through the main levels, but there are plenty of opportunities to increase play time with tons of bonus levels.

Based on the videos I had seen, and my predisposition towards platformers, I was already expecting to like Guacamelee. I had no idea how much I'd love it.

The platforming is not only challenging, but often times requires creative thinking. The combat is fluid and satisfying, especially when you pull off high hit combos or get through a particularly hectic battle without a scratch on you. The addition of a dodge ability adds an extra level of skill to combat and allows for different styles of play. The artwork is gorgeous and does an excellent job setting the mood for the game. And tons of fun video game and pop-culture references are sprinkled throughout the enitre game.

One particular thing I love is the optional depth to the game. If you're the type of player that only wants to stick to the main path and beat the game as soon as possible, you are able to do so. But for those who feel they've mastered the mechanics and want a bigger challenge, a little exploring reveals there is so much more lying beneath the surface.

I absolutely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys platformers, particularly those in the Metroidvania vein.
