Early Access Review
In my opinion, ULTRAKILL is the perfect singleplayer FPS.
It gives the player so much freedom, while also giving you that needed push to bring the most out of the game.

If you want, you could just grab your favourite weapon and mow down everything in your path. But if you want that sweet, red S-rank at the end of the stage, you'll have to switch things up, as your score multiplier will decrease if you keep using the same weapon over and over. On top of that, enemies all have their weaknesses and strengths. Some can block your shotgun's explosions, others can dodge certain attacks, but the game never forces you to use one specific weapon to beat one specific enemy.

The combinations are endless with the gunplay. You aren't just given a regular old shotgun, you are given a shotgun with a built-in grenade launcher that you can use to fling yourself around the stage at crazy speeds, you can parry your own shot to make it fly forwards and explode on impact, you can hotswitch back and forth to make it shoot twice as fast, and the list goes on. The game never outright tells you you can do all this, you're left to figure it out all on your own.

Lastly, the secrets in this game are some of the most cleverly hidden and fun to find secrets in any game i've played. Mild spoilers incoming:
One level has a closed door with no supposed way of opening it. After trying everything I could think of, it turns out you can just jump through the wall above it.
The first boss of chapter 5 is called "The Ferryman". Don't want to fight him? Just give him a coin, he'll open up the exit for you :)

All of these things combined make ULTRAKILL one of my favourite games of all time, and i would recommend it to anyone who loves crazy, high-octane first-person shooters.

Usually these kind of games aren't really my thing, as I often get bored with them. This game, however, was different. Just playing as a chill wombat doin' his thing and immersing myself in the sounds of the outback was, surprisingly, really entertaining and relaxing. Definetely reccomend this game if you're just looking to unwind for a while and chill out.

If you ever feel like revisiting all the awesome ninja kiwi games you used to play on flash sites, definitely just give this a look. It's free, after all.

Genuinely cannot tell if this is satire or not. If it is, it is really unoriginal and insensitive. I'm inclined to believe it isn't, but that doesn't make it any better.
There is no depth to any character, other than one single personality trait. The main character is mute, the bullies are mean, the girls want to ♥♥♥♥ the main character for no reason, and Chris is suicidal. Boiling characters down to only these traits not only makes for an incredibly bad story, it's also creepy and insensitive.
The humor is even worse. Basically, it's either "le funny earrape" or "le funny random werewolf T-pose" redditor humor.
The story feels like it's written by an incel who just graduated high school, but is still obsessed with TV high school cliches. On top of that, the creator (19 years old) encourages people with mental health issues to talk to him on twitter. For a game that is obviously targeted at edgy high schoolers? Ew, gross.

"Is this game worth buying?"
Short answer: yes.

Long answer:
Yes. The gameplay is extremely fun, and all the different item combinations, characters, unlocks, secrets etc. will have you hooked for hours. The core gameplay is already really good. Shoot enemies, loot chests, don't waste time, and get as far as you can. But in my opinion the real fun lies in all the different items you can get. Some runs you will get absolute garbage and die at stage 3 or 4, and others will keep going for 3 hours as you shred through every enemy in your way and zoom through the stages at mach speeds. The different characters you play as can also completely change what items you'll wanna look out for, and how you need to approach different enemies/bosses. And even if that eventually gets boring, you can make the game even more challenging with Artifacts which bring whole new elements into the game.
However, the game isn't perfect. I have a few things that I personally don't like too much:
-I just don't like the final boss. For the majority of the fight, it's only one/a few targets, but most items in risk of rain 2 really shine in big groups of enemies, therefore making half your build useless from the start. For characters with less mobility some of the attacks (even the ones that one-shot) can be extremely hard to dodge in certain situations and can also be really hard to see coming.
-At the start of the game, you just won't know what a lot of the items do, and you can only see a description after you pick them up. So at the start you'll have no idea what you're getting. This is especially problematic with lunar items, because they always have some sort of downside to them.
-Most equipment items kinda suck, and the ones that are good all do pretty much the same thing with a different animation, that being dealing damage.

Overall a really good game, and the few problems with it are easily outweighed by the fun and addictive gameplay loop that the game offers. 8,5/10, definitely worth the 25 bucks, and an absolute steal when it's on sale.

One of the best games I've ever played. A lot of replayability, and you can even download mods after you think you've done everything there is to do in vanilla. For only 10 bucks this game is an absolute masterpiece.
