TL;DR:

Short, lighthearted parody horror game with a really, really good atmosphere. 10/10.

============

Suspicious Downpour is a (very!) short yet fun game. The atmosphere that the devs have created is just beautiful, from the soothing sounds of the rain to the quiet rippling of the tent canvas. The keyboard controls are not what you would expect, allowing you to play a series of musical notes for... well, no real purpose really, but it sounds quite nice and would almost make this the perfect game for just relaxing... except for the glowing eyes (but even those aren't too bad once you get used to them). It's quite a short game (I've already played through it multiple times prior to writing this), but it's oddly beautiful in its simplicity. There's not a whole lot there, but for being made in literally 48 hours (for a Game Jam), I'm impressed.

PROS:

Nice, relaxing atmosphere and ambience (after you find the ending for the first time, that is)

Simple yet detailed graphics and environment (I really like the style, too)

Sounds are fabulous

You can improvise bits of music for yourself; you get a whole octave to play with

The keyboard itself is a game/puzzle mechanic, which is a really neat idea and not something I've seen done in this way before.

Legitimately finding the ending can be done extremely quickly (like, two minutes or less), but you can sit in your tent, listen to the rain, and play music as long as you want.

It's free!

CONS:

If you're looking for a legitimately scary game (for some reason), this isn't it. Suspicious Downpour is definitely much more of a playful parody of the horror genre instead.

Not a whole lot of playability/replayability unless you just like the environment and ambience (which I do)

Small but somewhat noticeable amount of input lag when playing notes (probably intentional and pretty reasonable, and adds to the overall feel of the game, but can make it a little difficult if you try to play actual songs)

SUMMARY:

Overall, I'd definitely recommend Suspicious Downpour if you've got a few minutes to spare and want a game with a unique environment and feel. There's not much to do (other than improvise little bits of music, throw the occasional sandwich, and look around with the flashlight), but the atmosphere is what sells this one for me (metaphorically; remember, it's free!). Plus, it's an easy 100% for achievements, and the ending is... spectacular.

Note: Headphones are very highly recommended!

Endless Sky is great. There's tons of ships, and practically every piece of equipment can be changed to whatever you want. The only constraints are your budget and the physical capacity of the ship in question. And both of those things can be changed if you want, since the game is entirely open-source and based on easy-to-modify .txt files. As far as the practicality of the modifications, you can outfit your ships for practically any purpose you want, from decreasing cargo capacity to make room for larger engines, to stripping out the weapons to install extra fuel pods. Anything you want.

The story, while still under development, feels very complete and is far more detailed and engaging than I would have expected from a free game. The choices you make can influence the story arc somewhat, though for the most part it's more a matter of whether the story actually continues at all or not. The galaxy itself is also incredibly diverse, with loads of individual planets with their own cultures and uniqueness.

PROS:

Tons of customization options for any and all owned ships

Very detailed and interesting storyline, surprisingly long despite the fact that it is not completed (yet!)

Wide-open galaxy

Each region (and by extension each species) has its own "feel" and traits

Classic style and feel, reminiscent of the old Escape Velocity series

Dynamic enemy and AI fleets and ships of all factions

Support for custom plugins

Easy to mod

It's free!

CONS:

Practically the only thing that can't be customized to much extent is the color of your ships; they stay generally silver-gray with trim color dependent on the faction you are allied with

Only one arc of the Tier 1 story currently completed

Steam version currently seems to be stuck a version or two behind the GitHub "active" version This was due to the lead developer (the only one able to push updates to Steam) being preoccupied with other things. There's a few other people that can push updates now, so this is generally no longer an issue.

SUMMARY:

Overall, I'd highly recommend Endless Sky. It's a great game in all regards, and it's free (and a small download size too). Just don't ask about the Navy License.
