The Outlast Trials breathes new life into the beloved horror franchise with its brand new co-op gameplay (though it plays perfectly fine solo). After putting a bit of time into it now I can safely say for me personally it’s a great purchase for any new fans of the franchise or returning. The gameplay is fun and it’ll certainly get your blood pumping, especially on the harder missions (modifiers and such).

The replayability is acceptable though it can get a bit repetitive after a while, but if you’re like me you’ll definitely spend a lot of time replaying certain missions trying to get an A+. The game is certainly different bringing in new gameplay mechanics such as rigs, prescriptions, amps, character customization and even room customization when in the main hub.

You can pick from four rigs which all work different from each other and can be used multiple times in trial albeit on a cooldown, those rigs are heal, stun, blind mine and X-ray and they can be upgraded as you level up. The heal rig allows you to heal yourself and any teammates near you with its healing gas. Stun is a throwable item that when thrown at an enemy will stun them for short period of time giving you time to get away. The Blind Mine similar to the stun emits a smoke that also stuns the enemy, the difference being its a stationary item you place on the floor and lead enemies into to stun them. Lastly, the X-ray rig essentially lets you see enemies near you when activated through a little pulsing dot thingy? Personally, I use stun cause I like a more aggressive and louder play style but everyone is different and should absolutely try them all!

Prescriptions are little passive buffs that let you do things BETTER basically and don’t have a limit to how many you can have on at once (once you own them they’re on forever) some also give you new abilities such as being able to kick foes attacking your teammates and such, but I don’t wanna spoil what they all do so I’ll just leave you to get them all

Amps are like prescriptions but basically more powerful buffs that are usually more specific, I don’t want to spoil much but trust me they are pretty good buffs.

The character customization isn’t too in depth, choosing from multiple preset faces and two voices, the clothing you start with isn’t much but as you level up and play the game you DO unlock more clothing options that can be bought with currency you get from completing the trials, same with room customization too. You don’t start with much but you will get more as you play all of it being bought with the money you get from playing the game. THERE
ARE NO MICROTRANSACTIONS!!

Even though it’s got pretty different and new mechanics, The Outlast Trials still feels true the franchise and when playing it, it really does feel like an outlast game. I’m very excited to see where this game goes as it has great potential already and I just hope the red barrels does right by it.

9/10
