The demo is representative of the final product, and this game lived up to the hype it built.
You are. You kill. You embody "kill." You are in control of every situation by necessity, for when things get out of control, you're dead. Even when you don't need the health, it still feels fun to kill.

I finished the game in ~5 hours, and I feel like the first three and a half hours are good, and the last half hour is incredible. Each level adds a new feature, give or take, granting you new ways of mobility and occasionally further attack powers. Your main attacks will always be "grab someone while they aren't paying attention" or "throw something at them," but you do get longer ranged attacks for significant damage when things are a little out of control.

Movement feels alright. The bigger you are, the bigger you feel; a 18-wheeler is not making the tight precision turns that a motorbike does. In combat, I never felt like my actions were out of my control. In puzzles/exploration, I got caught on exactly two corners and that wrapped up quickly.

Plot: Kill. Maim. Destroy. Quietly ponder why a science facility would have all of these locations. Fix the questions in your mind with destruction. Kill. KILL.

I do not regret paying $19.99 for this psychotic breakdown.

This is the epitome of 2012, when 2.5D was absolute cutting edge. The story is a generic zombie game, with edgy loner protagonist, generic new world order of bad people, and more cryptic edgy loner side characters.

The controls are bad. The game buffers input such that when you're leaping towards a wall you want to vault over, if you at any point during the jump or subsequent vault push up AND right, you will complete the vault, and then vault right back over to where you started. All they had to do is turn off accepting input until you're on the other side, but noooo. Additionally, there's the common problem of "you want to jump straight up to grab that ledge? Nope you're just slightly too far away." There are several moments where precise inputs are required, and for all of those, the death animations are significantly longer than the gameplay from the checkpoint to get there. You will spend a significant amount of chapter 2 listening to Randall Wayne gasp from being impaled on spikes / drowning. (I think they're the same animation, even!)

The combat is bad. When you have no weapon, you have no recourse to deal with zombies; you cannot jump over them, or dodge past them. You must face tank an attack, lose a point of health, then use the reaction to push them to the ground. The game strongly encourages you to not be in weaponless combat. Melee combat is what you'll be stuck with for most of the game. A fire axe. You have two attacks: a horizontal does nothing slash, which sometimes is actually shoving a single zombie forward, and a power overhead attack, which defeats a single zombie who is prone, even if there is a pile of them in front of you. After about 4 consecutive attacks, your stamina bar is drained, your attacks are significantly slower, and you can't run away far enough to recover all of your stamina. No amount of horizontal slashes / shoves will deal any damage to the zombies. They flash red, but only once in my playthrough did a zombie die from this (and I'm pretty sure it was scripted for being like 2 stairs above where the zombie is). The best you can hope for is that they stumble onto the floor, where you can finish them with the power attack.

If you are grabbed by a zombie, you likely lose 1/3 of your health, and the reaction is to shove only that zombie away from you. If you are in a group of 2+ zombies, the next one will instantly grab you and do the same thing. The game goes so far out of its way to discourage combat, but adds just a few near-mandatory fights. There's only about 3 truly mandatory fights, and "luckily" the developers only put a single zombie in each of those.

The guns work. They're not with you for much of the game, ammo is limited enough to make you consider conserving (but in hindsight unless you intentionally stuck around an infinite spawner, you'd never encounter enough zombies to waste ammo on), and only headshots work, but the guns work.

If you watched the trailer, thought "Wow that looks fun!" then I can safely say that no part of the trailer is misleading. You will jump. You will shoot zombies. You will climb ladders. You will hear narration. You will have a mediocre time if you manage to avoid frustration.

Beat it in 5 hours with mild side-exploration. This isn't the best First Person Parkour game ever, but it's alright. Parkour isn't free exploration so much as it is "hold space while moving at this texture, you'll do a specific move," which has the benefit of making the game much less about execution and precision and more about exploration. You'll never wonder "how the hell do I make that jump," but rather, "which way do I go to make progress up towards that ledge?"

Combat is... nonexistent at best, a brief pause in exploration at worst. All bosses except the last one are technically optional, and fighting them is... well, your moves are "jump," "move out of the way," and "collect items," and the fights use all of those.

The game is *very* dark, and brightness/gamma are in Advanced Options under graphics. The game is rather pretty, and sets a very desolate, uniquely apocalyptic tone. In short, worth about $20.

If you love Subnautica but have memorized the map etc. to the point where it's no longer scary or exciting... this is enough for you, even right now. If you liked Subnautica but felt it didn't have enough shoving penguins into lockers, you'll love this.

This is a beautiful testament to everything Goldsrc is capable of, and everything it is not. Play it once for the experience, twice for the commentary, and thrice for the nostalgia of the first time. This game goes where AAA games don't.
Just... remember that the HL1 SMG is trash and use the pistol instead.

Don't get why people think this is hard. Beat it on my third try, bottom to top. And by god was every floor a tense exploration of reflexes and planning.

Worth the $5. There's 3 sets of 5 levels, plus the workshop content, and each level is pretty replayable for faster kills, etc. You're never in any danger; this is target shooting at its finest. Some weapons are indeed better than others, but it all depends on your choices.

The workshop content, by god, it's amazing. There's levels (they're alright), and then there's recordings. For a game that's about playing co-op with yourself, adding a second "simultaneous" person casually chatting and pointing out secrets really takes this game to the ultimate "chill out" experience.
