I love what's here, but have a hard time recommending for most people. Game is missing a lot of content. Ignore me if all you care about is sandbox fights, that core component is in a decent state. Everything outside of that though isn't too great. Oh, and multiplayer is somewhat not really there outside of local multiplayer, and emulated local multiplayer via steamplay, so don't expect fighting humans unless you got great friends willing to 1v1 you in remote 'local' multiplayer.

I'll re-review at a later date, but I can't review content that isn't here.

HL1 with more unique NPCs and weapons. Too short, and the final boss kinda sucks imo. Thoroughly enjoyable, def recommend.

I adored this game until I got to Xen. I loved Xen in Half-Life. They took way, WAY too many liberties with Xen. Also added many repetitive, tedious 'puzzles' that no one asked for. They're all so backwards and tedious. Oh btw, the squishy explodey plants they tell you not to go near or touch? TURNS OUT THEY EXPECT YOU TO CLIMB ON THEM LATER, GOOD LUCK FIGURING THAT OUT. Everything was going fairly smoothly until they decided to throw all the game design rules of Half-Life out the window with Xen.
And They absolutely ruined the Gonarch. Dragged out fake fights and custcenes, just ignores your damage. You can't kill it until they let you kill it. But they won't let you know it's simply ignoring all your damage, and that you're wasting all your ammo you've been saving up. They want you to think that you can hurt it, because you did earlier. It's all fake. Top tier deadly sins of game design, you guys of all knew better. Comparing it with original, the fight originally had 3 stages. The damage wasn't ignored. And ultimately the fight goes fairly quickly. Black Mesa's version takes 10x longer and cheats you. Massive disappointment.

Edit: Cleared the game. The Vort city is somewhat neat, Nihilanth fight was interesting. Same problems the Gonarch fight had though. Bullet sponge damage ignoring behavior, even after you destroy the {REDACTED} protecting it. Trippy tho. Wouldn't recc though. Original HL is the way to go.

a highly polished turd. Great story. Good atmosphere. current game engine is in a state that wouldn't have been acceptable 10 years ago. Mouse accel you cannot turn off even with config edits. No Ultrawide support. Input and Framerate have an interesting relationship, but they should really see other people. There's so many UI/UX crimes against humanity throughout this I just gave up trying to squeeze a drop of serotonin out of it. (I finished the original release of the game years ago. It has not aged well due to technical dust bunnies from lack of maintenance)

i work too much and don't have time to play much games anymore but god do I want to take a month off and get lost in this

I've changed my mind.

The last content drop has some of the worst quest trees I've ever seen. I'm not killing Alex. Everything you built in this questline indicates you can side with Alex here, and you give me 3 flavortext options to kill her. ♥♥♥♥ this.

Flesh out your questlines before rushing to release.

Valve's continuing to lose the war on cheats. If they figure out a silver bullet, the game would be a 10/10 for my preferences. But they've failed. Over, and over, and over again. They are behind the curve technologically on this, and aren't willing to do what is necessary to fix the problem. Every move they make is months late. The problem's so bad it's turned otherwise legitimate players into cheaters themselves, who keep the toggles in their back pocket anytime they feel someone else is cheating against them. It's a wildfire. I hate it here.

Valve, get gud. This ♥♥♥♥'s embarrassing for a company with your resources to spare.
