Superior game to Tropico 3 in terms of mechanics and story, still reccomend you play both as they're equally matched in replay value and fun

Short Answer:

It's definitely a *new* experience for the Tropico franchise, and though it can be fun, it's a massive downgrade from Tropico 4 in terms of mechanics and content. Shallow to the point where the replay value is non-existant and unfufilling. Imagine what Sims 4 did compared to Sims 3, and that's basically what this review means by "new and different, but downgraded"

Long Answer:

I have invested 100+ hours into each title in the franchise. The biggest problem with this iteration of Tropico is that it is no longer about the Tropicans. The core of these games that separated it from other city builders is that you built a city around individually simulated Tropicans who had very specific needs and goals in life. Each Tropican had a purse based on their occupational wages, and it affected what venues they can go to and where they can live; which also influenced which political parties they belonged to and if they were ardent or light supporters. Breaking tradition, this no longer the case in Tropico 5.

You no longer focus on building your nation around the needs of the individual people; you are forced to focus on a research tree instead to unlock new buildings and eras. The struggle of each island will go something like this:

1. Get out of the Colonial era so you no longer have a time limit that forces a game over
2. New era means new demands you need to fulfill while you barely having a working economy since you were pressed for time instead of being able to focus on developing your infrastructure.
3. You need to satisfy the needs of the people with locked buildings, which you can't research because you cannot afford additional research buildings
4. Because the needs of the people aren't filled, they overwhelm your tiny military or vote you out.
5. If you manage to unlock said buildings, you are finally able to satisfy the needs of the people and redirect your attention to building a strong economy.
6. Because you researched everything, you're eventually forced into the next era - meaning restart at Step 2.

This game is very unbalanced because it forces you to focus on research rather than individual Tropican needs and making a working economy. You are setup to fail if you don't research, but if you do focus on research, you don't have time to plan a working, profitable economy to get you $$$$. Timeline is what kills the enjoyability of this game. You are no longer a banana-republic in the midst of the Cold War (or during the age of Piracy for that matter).

You're too focused on researching technology. Tropico is traditionally a game where you develop a nation up around it's citizen's many different needs. Now instead the game is dictated by a research tree and time eras, whether you're ready or not. The nature of Tropico 5 is: "You've researched all these buildings? Fantastic! Now you need to buy this expensive hospitals with workers you can't train or afford to import, all while you can barely afford to buy and develop a single factory"

Haemimont Games, who brilliantly developed Tropico 3 & 4, rolled the die remaking Tropico from the ground up with a brand new engine and streamlined mechanics. The end result: They were booted from the franchise by Kalypso Media, and now the new developers of Tropico 6, Limbic Entertainment, have to continue rebuilding the franchise on this new engine while revitalizing the identity of what made the Tropico games so good. It wasn't just about building a city, a nation, or making an economy. It was that every action you did got both a positive and negative response from your simulated Tropicans. Tropico 5 on the other hand? It has merely turned into a game of stats.

I took a risk buying this based on the mixed reviews, but here's what I have to say:

Great story, but strictly oriented around story. Not recommended to play in long runs, only in small doses. If you like Click-and-Point Story lines like TellTale games mixed in with game play management that works like a police dispatch flash game, but just enough to pass as a casual strategy game, it's definitely worth the buy. Unique for what it is, buy at your own discretion.

In it's current state, this game is terrific and will satisfy your desire for immersion if you're looking for a game simmilar to Age of Pirates. As a Warband mod? Amazing!

Takes some getting used to, but once you understand the mechanics of it, this is a fantastic tycoon game by a great past developer. Also check out Tycoon: New York City (Vegas: Make It Big's predecessor) which is 100x better and more fun to play (Once you delete the one file in (NYC) Steam's program files that makes the game unplayable to bug free after you delete it). Some maps are really bugged in Vegas and will cause many crashes, other maps play just fine. Definitely check out if you enjoy Tycoon games, competitive business, and making a lot of money.

This game has a very hard learning curve and can be very stressful to understand on your first play through even if you were doing sandbox mode. However, overtime this game becomes extremely addicting and is well worth it's price tag. In short, I can describe the game in three vital areas:

- Building, maintenance, and development of a studio and facilities that contribute to your publicity and production

- Very detailed 6-phase production of a movie (can work on 6 movies at a time, though it is very difficult to do so if you're trying to make 6 star quality screenplay) Script-writing phase, casting (Even the Producers and Directors you choose matter) , production, marketing, and release.

- After all of your production work, then it comes to release. How did the audience like it, critics, did it make or lose money, where did you open it, what was the appeal? Then there is several award ceremonies that occur over the course of the year (this game is turn-based on a monthly scale) and your movie winning an award can increase home release sales if you choose to market it - adds prestige to your studio - and you can create a filmseries that makes even more money as you attract a fanbase to that series. Huge emphasis on this point, it's very fulfilling too after all of your hard work

Overall, this is a very addicting turn-based-tycoon-style game that really makes you feel involved in the Entertainment Industry.

Highly reccomend for anyone who loves Tycoon games and/or Buisness Simulation games with a fantastic ballence between micromanaging and user-friendly UI when it comes to managment.

The campaign is challanging and fun, especially with a story-line that enhances the game so much more than just simply playing on a freestyle mode without obsticles and concaquences which affect your company name and rank for the good or bad.

Great game for Tycoon lovers and those who enjoy Management
