I got it for free and still feel ripped off.

What's with people elevating these absolute ♥♥♥♥ Norse mythological takes into shallow repetitive games? This, Banner Saga, Northgaard, all absolute trash that feel like they were made by a teenager during a game jam missing quintessential features like "hit detection" and "progress"...

Stop looking at negative reviews and just buy it if you're interested in a game/background while you do work or watch things on your second or third monitor.

Where once an update would include a new weapon, item, or biome, this is now a $4.99 DLC.

Nobody wants to pay five bucks for a couple new weapons, a boss, and an alternate level.

Second playthrough (thanks again for the extra key) and there's a good deal of improvements. To be honest, I was spurred here to say something positive for once because of the negative review today from Jim Sterling, whom I generally agree with. To think this was done by such a limited team, I thought it was rather clearly a work of love.

He thought this was a rather shoddy tribute and to be honest, after playing a good deal of "Souls-like" games, this really nails everything you could want and...want them to experiment with with a Soulslike. I've gone through the Surge series, Nioh, and Mortal Shell within the past year and while Nioh nails the combat feel and puts more emphasis on the RPG/weapon systems, Hellpoint feels so much more focused on the FEELING that was invoked with the original Dark Souls game on your first playthroughs: Wonderous foreign atmosphere that rewards and asks for exploration, tons of obscure data and a storyline that isn't forced upon you more than can be drawn from data you both seek out and things just shown/experienced by you, and combat incentives that continually grow (even if movesets feel pretty barebones) as your arsenal and stats grow, including a much more limited estus flask system that regains charge by you aggressively going after a foe.

Yes, there's some jank, but I found it all charming and in tribute to the Soulsbourne series. There's nothing revolutionary here, there doesn't need to be but there are enough surprises and secrets to justify multiple playthroughs and I'm happy to be back.

LOL LABOR OF LOVE just a casual reminder that you can take any gamer kill their family and rob them of their life savings but if you make an uwu anime of their favorite game and have le Reddit Reeves in said game, they'll forget anything bad ever happened.

I've only played 20 minutes but it's the greatest single crossover event in gaming history. Dragon Quest x Yakuza. Even referenced directly in the opening. YES. YESSSSSSSSSSS.

I spent time on this in 2012 and 2020. Two totally different games, looking back.
Now that this and it's main inspiration are 'officially complete' in terms of project roadmap...

Outside of mods, Terraria is still the greatest holistic experience with a wide and rich experience awaiting within; Starbound offers many of the same things but not as deep. Modded, Starbound goes beyond the standard Terraria experience in many ways creatively and in terms of building, but versus something like Calamity, still feels wanting from RPG elements.

Definitely still recommended, but more for the creative and 'with friends' play.

If it's not included in the whateverpass or whateverversion of the game, don't bother. Adds 3 chapters in already established locations with nothing new. I'm sure you've read about the shoehorned romance, that didn't bother me because every romance in this game has been insultingly done, what's insulting here is the strange insistence that suddenly your character wants to become a parent and then once they rescue their kid from the inevitable DLCdrama you just send them away.
