I've had this game on my steam wishlist for a year now, and I am quite sad about how the game turned out. The variety is quite minimal, and the core gameplay is far from being worth $20. I really wanted to love this game, but I dont feel like it meets the price tag. Its not a bad game, but I wouldnt recommend it. If it was free or even $10 that'd be fair.

Ended up buying the physical book because of this

I was completely hooked from the start. The first couple of hours were packed with a story I could get into it. It sets the tone of the game, and is the reason that makes wanting to come back to the game. After around 5 hours the story starts to show a little less, and the main game-play loop starts. For me I enjoyed the game-play. I felt it to be satisfying and actually enjoyable. I know some find it to be a drag, but I am a fan of the delivery sim style of game-play. Anyway, after the opening of the story and the end of the game you decided what pace you go at to complete the game. I have seen people say they spent the first 30+ hours in just chapter 3! Personally I was so interested in the story that I didn't do many of the side missions, but instead powered through the story. The last couple of hours are just like the start, a lot of story told through many fantastic cutscenes. Honestly the animation and voice acting in this game is 100% some of gaming's greatest. As I continue to write this review I realize I want to say so much, but I'm not trying to write an essay. I start to close it up now. Honestly I loved every second of this game. The story, game play, voice acting, animation, environments are some of the best I've ever seen. For someone who is interested in the game, please buy it. If you aren't drawn to the game by the media thats already out there, I'm not sure if this is for you, but for those who have an interest, I bet you'll love it. Also this is my first Kojima game. I am most certainly going to check out his other work now.

10/10 would get jump scared by an eBook again

There are games out there that try to do everything imaginable, but nothing seems truly refined; this game is not that. What Half-Life: Alyx does, it does amazingly. The polish, story, world building, and game design is unmatched. Truly a masterpiece and a wonderful addition to the Half-Life game series.

Sadly for me this game was unplayable. I had gotten to the 3rd level over multiple play sessions, but I couldn't bring myself to beat the the level. It was so nauseating. I couldn't push myself any further. It was sad because I was enjoying the game. I'm on a rift S, and no other game has made me feel so bad. I have played Pavlov for 3 hours straight and felt completely fine. If you are a true VR veteran I think this game will be ok. For me there was just too much verticality. Also people say that VR arms are needed in games, but I disagree. I find it weirder to look at arms that aren't place right compared to my real ones than just floating hands.

My arms are sore

Game is very pretty, but seems to be a little unoptimized. I have a GTX 1060 and Ryzen 1700 and this game does not run at a stable 80 fps at 1.0 resolution, 1.0 view distance, and anti aliasing at low. To be comfortable I have to crank the settings down making the game look a bit rough. If you have a strong PC I would highly suggest. For $5 you get a wonderful, peaceful, realistic park to explore.

I really enjoyed my time with this game. Voted for it in the autumn sale for The “Best Environment” Award!
