Offworld Trading Company (OTC) is a hybrid management/strategy sim where players helm interstellar corporations in a red blooded, no holds barred, capitalist fight to the death. Make money. Eliminate your competitors. Raise prices. Make more money.

This game gets a "meh" in my games library, but not for lack of trying. The game ran fine, and the presentation was not bad either. The soundtrack was serviceable, but forgettable. However like other strategy/4x/rts games of the genre, OTC suffers from what I call "single player syndrome." Single player syndrome occurs when a game has mechanics specifically designed for human play, but because of a lack of interest and time constraints, the game is played almost exclusively against an AI, which usually fails to utilize said mechanics to their fullest potential, either spamming the mechanic or skipping it all together. The issue is particular prevalent among strategy games because it is hard to coordinate multiple live players if expected game length exceeds one to two hours.

In the case of OTC, the game has what's called "The Black Market," a place where players can pay money to sabotage, disrupt, and in general ♥♥♥♥ with other players. By design the Black Market is asymmetric. The cost of each Black Market action is fixed, but its effects on another player vary by their build and how well they are doing in that particular game. In games with real players, the emergent gameplay created by the Black Market undoubtedly leads to many interesting scenarios--comebacks, close victories, etc. Against AI, which you will play against in both campaign and skirmish mode, or that is to say 99% of time for the average player, it is a CHORE. Like many other games with hacking/stealing/spying mechanics, the AI does not so much "use" the Black Market, it spams it. What was that? my water extractors were disabled for the third time this game? Instead of generating power, my wind farms are chanting workers of the world unite?

Partially the issue of the Black Market stems from misplaced expectations. The game looks
and feels like a city builder/sim/rts, certainly it shares many mechanics with those genres, but the game has a clear competitive bent to it. Map size, number of upgrades, and time to progress from lowest level of colony to highest is all designed to limit game time and promote conflict between corporations, which occurs almost immediately on making planetfall. It is no surprise that one of the most subscribed mods on the workshop is sandbox mode, because in normal gameplay there's almost no time where a player can sit back and simply observe their corporation in motion, or build to their hearts content.

Ultimately, Offworld Trading Company is not a bad game, but not one I can recommend either.

I got this game on sale for about $2 during the winter sale. That being said, I definitely think that it’s worth even its full price of $10. The in game art is fantastic—Disney meets steampunk— with cutscenes that are reminiscent of Endless Legend. The soundtrack is excellent as well, similar to Contre-Jour but it can get repetitive. Which brings me to my first gripe of the game: while the UI is clean and intuitive, the lack of assignable control groups makes micro-managing later on a chore. However, the worst thing about the game isn’t the UI, it’s the writing; I understand what the writer/s were going for, and I think the concept of the story is fine. But the way it’s written is just painful to read; though I attribute this more to being lost in translation than bad writing, seeing as the developers are French speakers.
Overall, the art in the cutscenes is strong enough to carry and convey the story without words, and because of that, I would recommend this game. More than anything I finished Highlands wanting more. At times the game feels a bit barebones—my playthrough was about 6 hours, but when you take into consideration that this is the first game of small studio, it’s completely understandable. I think Highlands is a solid foundations for a series, and Burrito Studio’s has multiple ways of expanding upon the game.

Fast, fun, rts. As an ex-starcraft 2 player, I find the lack of base building refreshing. This game has huge depth, and a high skill cap, while at the same time not requiring the high level of multitasking that often plagues RTS games.
