A fun JPRG with plenty of varied content and a narrative that flows well despite the “unique” pacing. Pretty much what you would expect from the successor to Persona 4, with plenty of gameplay and quality of life upgrades that go a long way. As a port, it is pretty much a copy of the PS4 version with minimal issues (I have to give the game credit for never crashing even when the stuttering gets particularly bad). Also, few Steam games have in-game PS4 button inputs and it’s always a plus to see them included. Otherwise, Persona 5 Royal looks great on PC and has high quality audio to match for a long requested port.

EDIT: NPB has been removed from the game completely, bricking every save that even included the league. I will leave the original review up, but it was scummy how they forcibly implemented it at the cost of players' save data.

Due to MLB exclusivity deals, there are very few professional baseball games available on PC. OOTP is a notable exception, and has been going strong for well, the past 23 years, with semi-recently acquired ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MLB licensing allowing them to use real team and player names. While most baseball games focus on the inning-by-inning action, with the player in charge of individual batters, pitchers, and defenses, OOTP focuses on managing an entire franchise. Which franchise you want to manage is completely up to you. This includes every MLB team from 1871 to the current year, as well as international leagues from Cuba to Japan. You can also mix and match, or just have them exist consecutively in the same universe. If that's not enough, you can just create your own league from scratch, with custom rules, teams, and formats.

As GM and/or Manager, your owner places you in charge of rosters, strategy, hiring competent staff, trades, scouting, contracts, drafts, financials, and much more. You are given a few general goals for each season and a budget, the rest is all on you. You can choose to manage each game, where you can give general commands for pitching, hitting, field shifting, baserunning or substitute/pinch hit players when necessary. I understand game managing isn’t the purpose of this game, but it is pretty bare bones. The 3D animations are notoriously bad, showing fielders teleporting, jumping into the stands, throwing 8 mph balls to 1B, or any host of other highly comedic but always very disastrous follies. It would be much more interesting if you could try and overturn close calls, or to get in the ump’s face in the hopes of energizing your team. Still, it gets the job done. If you don’t want to manage games individually, you can skip it entirely and simulate seasons in just a few minutes or any pace you want, though don’t be surprised at all the injuries and problems you’ll have to pause to deal with.

What this game really excels at is its depth. Not only is every player from the last 150 years in here, but they are also pretty close representations of their real-life counterparts. Of course, their entire real-life statline, batting/pitching/fielding ratings, injury proneness, contracts, and salaries all perfectly or more or less align. But their personalities, motives, and quirks are also represented in dozens of tailored sliders. The only glaring anomaly is the FaceGen system, which generates faces for players based on how they should look. In practice, this gives a result far more resemblant of the small town meth head version of them. Not the biggest deal in the world, but my therapist insisted I acknowledge my trauma. There are also plenty of random things that can happen on and off the field. I once had a player have their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ eye socket broken from a shark attack. Sometimes, an All Star will retire at 28 to pursue something else. And every now and then a waterboy will pop off and carry a deep pennant run. Aside from player storylines, there are plenty of other news articles, box score reports, and variable dialogue that keep the game fresh. There is also an impressive amount of information stored in the game. Extensive league histories, a large pool of rookie players and free agents, and even some weirder tidbits. If you want to learn the municipal regions of Albania, this game is surely for you.

Everything written so far has been about the game’s singleplayer content, the only worthwhile content in my opinion. The "Perfect Team" online mode - where you can fully customize and manage your own team with open lineups featuring all current MLB players and many of the sports greatest, sounds like a really cool idea. However, this entire mode is really just a cash grab where you have to either spend obscene amounts of money on the game, flip player cards like stocks, or get lucky with lootboxes. $40 is already a little steep for a game that releases yearly (at least not $70 like every other lifeless AAA game). It’s not a bad idea to wait for a sale, of which there are a good amount of and likely to be even more as baseball season ends. There are other player made tournaments that do not appear to have microtransactions available, but I have not really experimented much with them.

A quick pet peeve I have is the way this game handles achievements. For whatever reason, they do not stack. If you score 30 runs in a game, you will get the achievement for scoring 30 runs in a game, but not the achievements for scoring 15 and 20 runs in a game. This means that you will have to score between 15 and 20 runs for the lowest tier achievement, and you can only get one per game. This is the case with every single similar type of achievement and becomes insanely repetitive. This kind of makes sense on the online mode, where achievements can be earned infinitely and grant points per completion. However, for one and done achievements, it is just bad game design. It is also not very obvious which achievements are player based and team based. The achievement icons are the only thing to distinguish them, but it’s sort of a “if you know you know” kind of deal.

Overall, there are definitely more pros than cons to this game. OOTP Developments clearly puts a lot of work into this series, and it really shows as you dive into your own little world that you have full control over. The UI is wonderful, its operation like a web browser makes customizing everything to your heart’s content seamless. There are a few things that could use ironing out, but the overall product is game is full to the brim of charm that can only come from a deep love for the sport.

Also, for some reason if you bean Chase Utley before 2015, it leads to eternal peace on Earth. Not sure what that’s all about.

Great music as always, with classic remixes and top tier new tracks. Story is a little better than expected out of a spinoff game, though the fact there are no mentions of Royal content whatsoever is disappointing. The core gameplay is actually really fun and not as much of a deviation from traditional combat as you'd think, and it really highlights how cool the Phantom Thieves are meant to look when moving and fighting simultaneously as a team. The Personas available feel very limiting (especially the late game ones) but fusion is relatively in depth and fun to play with. The "real life" exploration is also constricted but the different settings the game takes place in are charming and nice to have to make the game feel more like a mainline title.

My only major complaint is the crashing, which is a complete pain in the ass in a game without autosave. Save often! Other than that, there are only a few small annoying issues, such as shop items having incredibly low stock, money being a major bottleneck even after 80 hours + full completion, way too many BOND skills, and Persona stat changes feeling useless.
Overall, P5S is a fun game that Persona 5 fans will almost certainly have fun with.

A damn good port of a damn good game for a damn good price. Persona 4 Golden is the most accessible and ultimate version of Persona 4 available and the only technical problems I've faced across numerous playthroughs are some slow downs during All-Out attacks that are probably just because I have an old PC.

For those who have only played Persona 5, most of your favorite aspects of P5 will still be here. There are plenty of complex social links, a wonderful balance of social/combat, with loveable characters and an interesting story, lots of personas to fuse and fight with, a phenomenal OST, and a lot of fun little things to pursue and explore. The gameplay is slightly less refined than P5, but it is hardly dated by any stretch.

For those whom the Persona namesake means absolutely nothing, this is a great game to start with, assuming you are looking for a story rich experience that involves a lot of reading + cutscenes as well as a somewhat hefty completion time. Overall, Persona 4 is a charming, well rounded game, and it's hard to believe it was once a PS2 title.

Sadly better on console, even with the outdated DRM hell being patched out. A lesser game than what was released over 10 years ago.

This port does everything it has to. For those who haven't played Catherine before, this port makes it very accessible, and save for the dated animations, it holds up. The gameplay is rewarding and suits the story perfectly.

Game has not changed much since release. If you've held off this long, I can't see why you'd get on board now. I sure wouldn't.

If you were a fan of Tropico 5 you'll probably enjoy this game. If you thought you got enough out of 5 you'll probably not find too much else with this game. The game is certainly some improvement over Tropico 5, and the missions available are fun to work through.
