I'm not smart enough to decipher any concrete meaning or ideas out of this game but this was such a cool experience and the abstract feel of everything was excellent. I can not wait to see if anything more comes out of this game!

I always thought the gimmicks from RE7's 21 were an interesting concept. Card games as a roguelike seemed like a very novel idea.

I'm glad someone else got it right, too.

(Gotten for free, paid for both DLCs)

Originally, one of my friends bought this game for me and I kinda looked at it and was like, alright, seems whatever.
Eventually I started playing when one of my friends tried picking it up, and from the start of that month to the end, I think I racked up 250+ hours.

This is, by far, one of the BEST games I have ever played and probably ever will play (unless they somehow ruin it, god forbid).
The gameplay, the character designs, the environments, the actually good DLC, and the crazy cool modding scene. All of it is god tier. There is not a single complaint I have with this game on an objective level, besides some multiplayer nit-picks. So many ways to add replayability that so many roguelike creators just out right fail to even begin to comprehend. It made a game that is hard, fair, and allows you to progress to a power fantasy, paired with one of the coolest and most amazing final boss fights I've ever had in any game hands down.

My only *real* complaint is that multiplayer is kinda "eh" without mod tweaks. Like I get that I play on custom difficulties with custom artifacts, so my view on the base game is kinda skewed, but even on the base game hard playing without item share or any real revive (you only revive between stages, missing out on loot that is already in short supply from no item share.) is obnoxious, especially with randoms. I get they want thought and carefully choosing which character gets what item for a specific class for better team building, but honestly it is just annoying to think about.
So it is good to mention that you won't see these issues in singleplayer, or can just fix them with mods.
Or maybe you like that level of team building, who knows?

Regardless, thank you Hopoo for this masterpiece. If you can get this game, PLEASE get it. Trust me when I say that it is easily the best roguelike on the market. You will NOT be disappointed.

So I originally had this as a positive review, but as much as I don't like leaving negative reviews, I don't like leaving reviews that, all things considered, give general praise to a game that wasn't generally good.
Basically, my old review said that this game is okay, and has pretty good optimization.
Has okay mindless zombie killing as well, but that is literally it.

I've seen people say in many reviews of games that they wish there was a mixed review option, and this is a time I wish it existed.

This game, objectively, has mechanics that are really cool, like the parkour (albeit, clunky at times), and interesting gimmicks like having night time spawn special zombies and all that.
But the problems of this game are just, insane.

The story is abysmal. To be fair no one is playing this game for the story, but it is not great. I like the moral dilemma the main character has with his mission and the people he meets, but that is the only interesting part of the story.

The gameplay is an absolute slog. Like I'm not even kidding, this game has the most monotonous gameplay I've ever experienced. Zombies just don't die. You can swing a million times and zombies just won't fall. I played on normal, and for the entire time I played I did not enjoy combat once. Firearms are entertaining enough I guess, but the melee is so unbalanced and is only fun once you get skills that you will only acquire after many hours of playtime. So basically you won't be killing anything until the end-ish of the game / postgame content. Not to mention the variety of annoying instakill zombies, instakill mechanics, and the downright mind-boggling implementation of melee swing stamina.
Why fight anything if you'll waste 10 minutes doing so? I enjoy hard games, but the difficulty from this game comes from being obnoxiously annoying and slow rather than actual difficulty. It's like playing a roguelike but starting in the last level. For a game that people praise for being a zombie killing power fantasy the game sure as hell makes you work 10 times over for a taste of it.

The only enjoyment I got out of this game was when I had my high skill friend do most of the annoying work for me, and when they gave me god tier weapons to play with. Not to mention guiding me where to go sometimes because the level design is extremely unintuitive at some sections.

This game isn't terrible. Far from it. But I wouldn't say it is enjoyable. Its one of those things where either you pick it up and love it, or grind through the chore of the game until it becomes playable, and then you mess around power killing zombies for like 30 minutes before getting bored.

Ultimately, this game isn't bad, but it isn't great. Go into it like you would a MMORPG. Just a lot of annoying grinding with negligible supplementary content, and then MAYBE you'll like it.
It is a rare instance of a game being "good", but not enjoyable.

However I will say you should probably look at some other reviews before deciding whether to get this game or not, both positive and negative. I will admit, that while I have some complaints for this game that I do feel are objective, there are some aspects that can be considered to be good that are just things I personally don't like.
That being said though, don't just read positive reviews only. This game's community is one of the most die hard rose tinted glasses cult following communities I've ever seen. We're talking like Resident Evil 4 levels of meat riding here. (Which is fair enough I guess, I can see why people really like this game, but to disregard legit complaints others have is ridiculous.)

At least it is very pretty and optimized, so even if I didn't enjoy it, I didn't have to hate it at 10 FPS.

it gets brownie points for having the main character be va'd by sonic / chris redfield though lol

i spent countless hours in school melting the little square dudes with lava

Thank you Powder Toy team for one of the most enjoyable flash (?) games I've ever played!

Melting people aside though, it is an extremely fun and impressive physics sandbox, and for free is absolutely astonishing.

A must grab. Even if it costed money, a must grab.

A decent, calming 15 minute to 1 hour experience.

The achievements are the real "challenges" here as the general route from start to finish is unfailable and pretty easy. And I mean EASY, not that challenge is the main incentive here, but I 100%ed this game in like 40 minutes.

But uh, 3 dollars? Yeah, 1 buck max on this one. With all due respect for the developer, as I bet they put decent effort into this short game, this should arguably be free. The general lack of content and extremely short game time makes this game not even close to 3$, so you're better off waiting on a sale.

Early Access Review
This game allowed me to get to the skill I needed to beat the original I Wanna Be The Guy in an extremely fun way. 8 year old me would be proud.

This game is a great entry point into IWBTG fangames as well, and it may as well be the go to for any IWBTG related platforming fun. Way more convenient and easier to set up and play than fangames. If you love precision platformers in general, this game is probably your best choice.

Basically a "Smash Clone" that wants to retain the technical skill and speed of Smash Bros. Melee.

And well, the game achieves that. If the base game is what your looking at mainly.

I wish I could give a better in depth look at the game from a base game standpoint, but the workshop is honestly the real seller here, and the main reason I even touched the game at all in the first place. It just turns this game into a modded smash bros, without the annoying inconveniences of brawl/sm4sh modding configuration.

The workshop community I would honestly argue, with all due respect to ROA's dev team, is the real reason this game is still even relatively popular, if not the reason it blew up at all. Makes base game seem boring and obsolete.
Its so good it is basically the main reason for my recommendation of this game.

Aside from that however, not much to say except that you should DEFINITELY buy this game on a sale. $30 is what they are asking, and regardless if that is influenced by workshop support or not, is still an insane price to be asking. $20, TOPS. If you can get this game around $20, by all means pick it up and have fun.

Oh yeah and one more thing. On the context of crazy prices, there is a lot of extremely overpriced DLC for just skins of base game characters.
So, you know, lol.

TL:DL; Workshop hard carries and preferably wait for a decent sale.

What is there to say that hasn't been said a million times already?
- Don't expect "A Hat In Time 2"
- Game is pretty short (I 100% the whole thing in around 8 hours)
- Overpriced

But it still is a pretty solid fun laid back experience. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes easy/platforming games.
That being said, if you really want this game, please cop this game on a sale. It realistically barely earns a $15 price tag, and that's being generous.
