This review is mostly based on whether the price is worth it for the amount of content and experience you're getting out of it. I'm definitely changing my stance on this IF future Title Updates manages to provide something that's worth your time and money.

CONTENT
First off, I love the series as a whole and want it to continue doing well while upholding a certain standard, and there's definitely a degradation in that standard. I'd be disingenuous to myself by calling this game "complete". Wilds on release unfortunately is simply an incomplete game on several core aspects. Stuff I had issues with were:
  • Cannot redo the final boss
  • No gathering hub
  • No extra bounties you get to select, aside from the fixed weekly ones
  • No player rooms, customizable or not.
  • No layered weapons, at this point its no excuse to hold this feature out until the Master rank expansion.
  • Lack of endgame monster variety (Arkveld simulator), Apexs are fine too but the rewards pale in comparison (more details below).
  • Lack of meaningful quests for unlocks or completion. In comparison to World, you had at least numerous Mantle quests, Tailraider missions, Challenge/Arena Quests, Canteen/Farm Quests, and other miscellaneous things. Wilds has a few side quests that had hunts tied to them but they pale in comparison.

I'm aware and looking forward that the upcoming first title update will fix a good chunk of these issues but these should've been in the game ON release. Rise at least had an excuse due to a global pandemic. The roster of monsters is not that big either, and this being the series' 20th anniversary title I had higher expectations. The fact that Capcom had to hold back core things on release into title updates gives me little optimism about the direction the series is heading.

STORY
Throughout most of the series, the story has always been secondary and up to the player to catch up on it by going through NPC dialogue or notes scattered throughout the game. It took quite a turn since World/Rise, and usually I don't have a problem with that. The main problem I have in Wilds is that during certain points of the story, there are some features you're just locked out from, sorta forcing you to deal with the problem in the story first. One issue I encountered was that you cannot rest to reset (was trying to collect endemic life) when you had to hunt Rey Dau, because the locale was forced to remain in its inclemency state. Its not a major issue for me, but I'd prefer if the game lets me do what I like at any point in the story. The story and world building itself is decent for a MH game, and its not long either, but if you're coming into this series for the first time and want to experience the game solely on its story/narration you'd likely gonna be disappointed.

GAMEPLAY/COMBAT
This aspect of the game is something I'm actually enjoying and it's actually carrying the hours I'm putting into it. The combat is definitely the most fluid so far out of the other MH titles, and the new counters/offset moves does give a satisfying rush when you pull if off properly. The combat however has its own issues, for some odd reason the developers decided to add input lag into certain moves, between 1 to 7 frames depending on the move. This took me a while to get used to it, but its still quite a baffling decision to not have the option to turn it off. The new focus mode mechanic is fine, it's a decent quality of life for some players but could be an issue for those who prefer to have a challenge when it comes to positioning yourself.

Another minor issue I have is the "hunting" aspect. Wilds follows Rise's monster tracking style, meaning your target is on the map at all times. While this could be seen as a positive for some, it does sacrifice the charm of going on a hunt and tracking down the monster via tracks yourself. Not to mention that your mount will just automatically track and give you a ride to wherever your target is.

Finally, the difficulty. While its true players do get better, it's also true for a game to become easier than the last titles at the same time. Due to the new wounding mechanic, monsters can be easily overpowered and stunned locked more often in this game compared to previous ones. In World, low rank monsters were not hard but they could absolutely cart you if you're not careful early on (Tobi/Anja). Here, they're not that difficult either but they're no threat whatsoever throughout story progression. The game is definitely easier because the hunter has more in their kit to utilize. As for the endgame, there's really only one or two tempered monsters that would prove to be quite the challenge.

MULTIPLAYER
I've played through the entire story solo, as did my friends and only started doing hunts together once we finished so I can't give an opinion about the experience for story co-op. The new 100 player lobbies are fine, you can see players at base camps (although they take a while to load in), and most big lobbies I've experienced players are quite active in helping others. Socialization isn't an issue if you're the type of player who wants that out of a game.

ENDGAME
The endgame grind is the similar to previous games, grinding for decorations for your builds and a new Artian weapon system, where it requires specific parts you obtain from Tempered monster investigations. If you've played Iceborne, its a system similar to Safi where you'd roll for stats. The main difference is that you have no control of what stats you obtain once you start upgrading them. I don't hate the system, but I don't particularly like it either. Its made even more inconvinient due to the UI where you'd have to keep going back and forth crafting and dismantling the ones you don't like.

PERFORMANCE
There's absolutely no excuse for this game to be optimized the way it is. I've managed to run games that work smoother and look better with the build that I have, personally I didn't encounter too many issues, lag spikes or crashes, but I'm hoping down the line there's some performance fixes to iron out the edges but it should not absolutely be released in such a state.

MISC
Few other mentions of good, neutral, bad:
  • +Good environments/weather system, makes the world feel more alive and dynamic.
  • +Extensive character customization
  • ~No external chests to access items faster, tent system is fine
  • ~Ingredients for food is now limited, but they're far tedious to obtain for now
  • ~Item loadouts not tied to radial menus, same for armour/layered armour
  • ~Minor connectivity issues, depends on where the host of the hunt you joined is from and how far away they are from you or how stable yours and theirs are.
  • ~Some locales have great areas to fight monsters, but some are just abysmal (I.e: lack of space/obstructive ledges)
  • -Mantles on cooldown after quests
  • -Hitboxes of Focus strike openings are inconsistent.

CONCLUSION
It hurts for me to not recommend this game at the moment, it has a solid foundation and I am gonna continue playing Wilds frequently, one of the main reasons being I just wanna improve my play styles in various weapons. Is the game currently worth it's $70 price tag with its current state though? You're better off saving your money for now and just get World or Rise and their expansions and would have more content to go through. However if you're willing to let some of these issues slide then by all means feel free to get the game and give it a try yourself. It's just I can't in good faith recommend something that's released half baked. Obviously once enough quality title updates are out, the price is likely more justifiable and I'll update my review accordingly.

This game really gives out the "Just one more turn" vibes. Simple and satisfying game, when you manage to pull of a win with what you encounter in each run.

The game has improved slightly since release but time and time again the community has given so many chances for Starbreeze to improve on their decisions. One step forward, two steps back over and over.

Its such a shame because the game has a solid foundation both visually and mechanically, but falls short when it comes to gameplay balance and content. For its current price point, it really isn't worth it, even on discount.

Desktop wallpaper generator.

Jokes aside, its a simple platform game with a fantastic artstyle on top. Go for it if you're into something slow paced and relaxing.
