21st Oct 2021 Edit:
This review about to turn into a history log of my perspective of the game over the years so I'll do some small edits from time to time. Looking back, the game has an interesting history and my current stance on whether you should buy this: Neutral

Buy the bundles/collection during sales. Personally, some of the content/missions are fun while some aren't, and its difficult to say which would be fun for you. I'm glad Overkill is still showing this game some support and moving past the 'loot box' era several years ago, but the shear amount of DLCs and pricing are something to keep in mind.

2015:
Loved the game the moment i bought it, or should i say "loved" it for the first hundreds of hours. It has a great concept in terms of gameplay and it was well over a year ago I noticed Overkill dishing out large amounts of DLC, but let it slide anyways. After reading recent updates on the game, sad to say that Overkill pretty much screwed the game with microtransactions. Its been a while since i played the game, and dont think ill be playing it anytime soon.
Game is great back then? Absolutely.
Now? Look at the total amount of DLCs, and the worst part? More microtransactions within and you thought you could finally stop spending after getting majority of the DLCs.
Unless you're rich af, stay away from this game because Overkill pretty much cares about the money more than the so called "community" they once promised about.

Now that microtransactions are out of the way, the game and its community seem to went back to a much stable form. Take note that I would highly recommend to buy it during sales as it still has tons of DLC's as a con, but the new heists and content that were recently added kept the game much more enjoyable than before.

Honestly, without the DLCs, the game can get quite repititive and a max cap of level 50. Borderlands 2 is one of the few games where the DLCs (mainly campaigns and ultimate vault hunter packs) are COMPLETELY worth buying, adding so much more into the game.
We are talking about:
-2 more playable characters
-4 more campaigns which includes more loot and UNIQUE weapons to be found.
-Max level cap at 72, meaning more skill points to wreck your enemies
-Level 72 not enough? Get overpower levels (up to 8) to make your enemies scale up to level 80+ and find level 80 weapons in the process. (Also a DLC)
-5 Head hunterpacks, optional if you're willing to spend some cash to spice up a little more missions.
If you love open world games with a mixture of RPG values AND coop features to play with your friends, would definately recommend this game.
-Ranks to increase stats that apply to ALL characters by completing tasks
As for storyline, has many aspects in it, of course, definitely humour
The only cons i see in the game is tedious farm for EXP towards end-game ONLY if you are playing multiple characters. Its a pain to level each one of them to level 72 (Only if you have both vault hunter packs) if you really felt like doing that in the first place, unless of ocurse you have the patience to do so.
Overall, in my opinion, i enjoyed the game and i do still have plans to continue here and there.
