Anmeldelse for emne med tidlig adgang
I had always mentally compared this game to Rimworld, you start with 3 people, they have various inclinations and stats, you have to survive, build, and even thrive while beset upon by the environmental challenges.

While there are superficial elements of colony sim that are present in both, the complexity of ONI steers towards Factorio levels of "There's always something to make more efficient"

So be ready to restart a couple times as you learn the mechanics, lose a few workers to disease or drowning (Always build ladders)

If you're interested in maintaining the delicate balance of food, oxygen, and water, this game is for you.

Edit after 140 hours:

Can't say much more, game is addicting! I just want to make it to space lol

Solid game, great mods.

If you like CCG systems like Magic the Gathering or even Hearthstone, but aren't competitive, instead you want a PVE experience?

Here it is.

Good luck!

If you're like me, You've played Rimworld, you've launched a rocket in Factorio, you've spent countless hours playing various tower defenses, etc... Now you're looking for something else to scratch that itch, well, now it's available in one package.

This game tasks you to keep a colony running for as long as you can in an environment that tosses enemies at you every night, eventually the evil corruption shows itself and starts building on your tile! It starts to get real as you have to push them back while maintaining your colony.

I'm only 2 hours in but my girlfriend is already mourning her loss as I expect to spend a lot of hours with this one.

Edited after 33 hours:

Still fun! The game just released and though the Dev has kind of a way of changing up the game frequently lol (Addition of trash, hunting, etc) the core gameplay is still what I fell in love with.

Do you like Halo and RTS?

You might like this!

But are you annoyed when your units have really poor pathing, get in each others ways, and sometimes for no reason, spin around in hopeless circles?

You might not like this.

I don't care that the game was built with a controller in mind, the keyboard and mouse controls work fine.

What matters to me is leading a team of tanks is a bit of an exercise in frustration and it's never going to change, the devs aren't going to improv pathing.

The game was decent, I beat it during the free weekend, but I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it.

What can I say that hasn't been said?

If you have even the slightest interest in fostering the efforts of young, crashlanded colonists while they carve out an existance on the Rim, filled with raiders, aliens, bionic cyber soldiers, and maneating squirrels.

This game is for you.

Do I like it? Yeah!

Preface:

So I noticed a couple weeks ago, that thanks to Humble Bundle, I've managed to get Dungeons 2, 3, and War for the Overworld without any playtime in the genre (I played about 20 minutes of dungeon keeper 2, 8 years ago, I bought it recently though!)

I have changed all that by now, I beat Dungeons 3's campaign, then Dungeons 2, then I bought and dabbled in Dungeons 1 but that is a whole different game, so since I wasn't feelin' it, I decided I'd give War for the Overworld a shot.

Review:
4/5 Graphics
4/5 Gameplay
5/5 Replayability

Graphics: It's not going to be winning any awards for the graphics, even as indies go, but you can pretty much throw all of that out the door because the graphics are functional and the devs make everything fit the theme. So who cares about the graphics. Also, it turns out that I beat the campaign without changing the texture resolution from 25% which is default? Maybe? to 100%, so I give them 4/5, it's a 10/10 for appropriate though!

Gameplay: Well, from what I gather, the "core" of the game is closer to Dungeon Keeper than Dungeons is, and boy, does it seem like a game made a decade ago! But is that bad? No, brilliant games came out back then, I'm just saying some of the level layouts are fairly linear, not allowing for a lot of wiggle room to build your dungeon in.

This eases up a bit in the last few levels of the campaign, those areas are fairly large but their challenges are much steeper.
Speaking of challenges, it's not really a tough games by RTS standpoints, but some levels ask that you be fairly aggressive. I even consulted a speedrun guide for one of them as the level would get much more difficult as soon as the enemy built its mega unit only about 8 minutes into the map.

Talking about the gameplay:
You build dungeons, it naturally calls forth creatures to roam your dungeon and eat your food.
You tunnel into the path of innocent humans, and send your creatures forth to kill them all.

It's a game concept that I've found can be done a couple different ways, each of them fun!

Personally, I feel a little cramped on the dungeon maps themselves, a lot of the time I found myself missing having a Dungeon Map and an Overworld Map (Playing 2 "levels" simultaneously) which is a key feature of Dungeons 2 and 3, it allows you to play, what amounts to, Dungeon Keeper/War For the Overworld, and then send your creatures to the overworld to fight like you were playing Warcraft 3.

So being restricted to the dungeon map took some getting used to.
I will say that the 12th level shows off a pretty large dungeon size, one I felt pretty comfortable in.

I give it a 4/5, because there are certainly improvements that could be made for their sequel, I have heard that their DLC may have fixed some of my issues with map layout, etc but until I can try Heart of Gold, I'll have to wait and see.

Replayability: Easy 5/5, the game is made to be replayed, the stage's achievements are unknown until you beat it the first time, and there are unlockables for fulfilling things like beating all achievements, etc.

Then there's Skirmish mode, DLC, and of course, a level creator with custom campaigns. People have remade Dungeon Keeper 2 in it's entirety, it's pretty crazy. I will be playing a lot of this game!

It's a great game, worth the price if you're a fan of the genre, if you're not, maybe wait for a sale.

TLDR: If you see this on sale, like games with a bit of colony simulation (Rimworld), Tower Defense, and RTS (Like Warcraft-Lite, but it's fun) pick it up!

Honestly? Game's a lot more fun than I expected.

Coming off of games like Rimworld, I finally grasped the underground's Colony sim aspect of maintaining the dungeon. It's a bit like a tower defense under there.

Once you've built up forces you get to go into the overworld and play an RTS with your characters. Switching back and forth to the dungeon at any time.

The game's story is an unabashed almost shameful parody of Warcraft 3, with elements of LOTR, Game of Thrones, and other fantasy games.

The narrator is silly, the "Good guys" are long winded, and your main Villainess has a split personality.

It can get a little tiring during the mission introductions, when you just want to get to it, but the gameplay is fun enough so if you don't care about the story/humor, you can skip it by holding escape

I've put 14 hours into the campaign so far, in two sittings, I was just very addicted to the gameplay! I don't mind so much that the campaign is mostly repeating, you gain new stuff to add each time, and it's a good way to learn.

There's a harder difficulty, and skirmish/endless mode settings so there's plenty to do in game.

I got it from Humble Monthly, but I encourage buying this for under $10 if you like RTS, Tower Defense, and Colony simulators.

Edit: Took me another 20 hours, but I finished the campaign.

So yeah, it's definitely a bit repetitive, eventually I formed a strategy that I employed every time and only varied my army compositions. By the end of the last mission, I finished it with only my titans and my main villain, a little lackluster, but I did spend 3 hours on that map, an hour longer than the average (It will compare you to the world stats after every mission, I like that)

So repetition isn't a bad thing, the Dynasty warriors series and it's spin offs are repetitive, Monster Hunter is (debatably) repetitive even with all the options and monsters.

Those games are backed up by gameplay, repetition doesn't matter if you're enjoying it, similarly I think this game is fun, I lost hours to it in a way I haven't since Rimworld, Factorio, and Total War games.

I do plan on buying the DLC on sale, I like the game and got far more value out of it than it cost me as part of the Humble Monthly, but I'm not so in love that I will pay full price :p
