This is one of those games harass you with constant tutorials with a long tutorial level. They couldn't even made a proper menu, and glitches the whole Windows when you try to alt-tab or quit the game.

It adapts the Metroidvania style with its own dark and and twisted way. It is obvious that developers care about every detail, from the art style to the story telling methods. The only disadvantage is that it can be hard and painful to pass the beginning stage. After that, game helps you in many ways to make itself easier. I am amazed that they even think about dusts falling when we jump on platforms. They really cared about the smallest details.

9: Must play - One of the best games of the year it came out.

Visually appealing, yet mechanically terrrible game. It is amazing that this game gets "mostly positive" in Steam, yet it is very very weak compared to better Metroidvania style games around here. Doesn't even worth to install this poorly made game. I wish they cared about the mechanics as much as the visuals.
Storytelling is weak, and heavily depended on the books we collect around. They didn't even care to implement storytelling to the dialogues or the level design.
They used a RPG style level up system inside the Metroidvania style. However combat with mobs are just plain boring.
When you hit a monster, the attack doesn't affect it and it continues to walk towards you, and due to delay after your attack, you can't run away from their attacks and take damage for unavoidable reasons. You get movement delays after you attack, yet monsters don't get any delay or stun after getting damaged. This system is plain stupid. Check out Hollow Knight for better combat mechanics.
And just to salt the wound, they removed any "combat animations" from the monsters. Monsters simply walk around, and damage you whenever they touch you (even from behind).
Waste of time, waste of money.

2: Intolerable - Bad enough to make you refund the game.

More Metroid than Super Metroid. Back to the original NES roots. If you are not a NES fan, you may have hard times on this game. But if you are American and still crazy on the NES-hype train, then this is your kind of drug. Almost no story, direct to the action. However game can be confusing at many times, and either you have to struggle for eternity to solve it, or consult on the Nintendo Power magazine. Rad!

7: Above average - It presented what we regularly see in a different way.

Overhyped and boring game. There are many references to the "geekdom", but a reference is not funny or intellectual just because it refers to something, especially if it doesn't contain any context. "Hey look I am Darth Vader and you will call me your Grand Marshal, because I am from Planet Doom and command the Space Marines of Halo!" If you believe this sentence was funny, this game is for you. If not, don't even bother with the boring style of this UnGame.

1: I never understood what they were trying to do. Don't waste your time playing.

Combination of Metroidvania, RPG, Hack&Slash and Action Platform in a single game. The story feels very childish, but it presents a tale-like atmosphere inside the game. You can choose different difficulty settings, and this gives you a chance to play with your own play-style. You can taste the story, or just challenge yourself to the max. Character movements are smooth enough, and you regularly get new abilities during the story. You can play the game as a button mashing Hack&Slash, or just an exploring platform game, no matter what is your choice, it gives enough content for that specific purpose.

9: Must play - One of the best games of the year it came out.

Interesting idea but a bit dull. You need to think out of the box to solve the puzzles. But the gameplay mechanics can give you headache even if you understand the solution. Usually a puzzle-adventure game presents you a few mechanics and then combine those mechanics for you to implement on puzzles. However this game constantly jumps away from previous mechanics and doesn't even obey its own rules. This maybe forces you to think out of the box, but for many puzzles it only makes you to brute force the puzzles. And the lack of (enough) narration / storytelling prevents this game to be as exciting as Portal 1/2. However, the game has interesting mechanics and that's enough for us to vote positive.

Parody of 2010s Gaming Industry. Not a groundbreaking game, but still provides with Metroidvania style gameplay and sarcastic humor. It is kind of short game, yet you need to replay a few times to fully consume every content game provides.

Just a Final Fantasy love letter from a NES fan.
Yeah, you know, NES is being treated like "the only gaming platform ever" in USA for some years. And Evoland follows that trend by creating a game based on Final Fantasy series. There are a little bit Zelda, a little bit Mana, a little bit FF, just to combine a "history of gaming" for console gamers.
We don't see anything related C64/Amiga/DOS games, only the games American NES fans know and love. And as I mentioned above, many aspects of the game - like character names, graphic design, combat mechanics, story concept are all dumbed down version of Final Fantasy stories.
If you believe you are in the target audience, go for it. You will like this love letter.
As a PC Gamer, I find it very lackluster.

6: Average - Some may love and talk about it, but nothing more.

The game is buggy and problematic, yes, but the main missions are perfect and that's enough for me. I loved the atmosphere they created based on the Pen and Paper settings. The graphics were very nice, the characters you talked to were as if you were watching cinematic. Even turning on the 106.9 30 Principales radio channel and wandering around the streets was very enjoyable.

It is a shame that they released this game without polishing it completely. The infamy of the bugs masked the good parts of the game. This could be a 10/10 only if they released it after a few years. They rushed to release the game on 2020, and this caused the "over-hype" syndrome for teenager gamers. We, older PC gamers, are used to played buggy games since 90s. But these new generation of gamers only play polished AAA games. That's why this was a risky move, and they failed hard, and RDR2 fans used this failure to bash and mock the game. gg.

8: Very good - It deserves to be popular, although some of its faults are obvious.
