CHIRSTEN, WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM THIS VENUE?!?

Update as of 6/13/20: Man. After a few months of playing Race driver: GRID (the first one, for the sake of simplicity, I will refer to it as GRID 2008), and coming back to this, I will say... This series is a mere shadow of its former self.

It is honestly depressing how far GRID has fallen in terms of enjoyment and immersion. The lack of racing team management in GRID 2019 compared to GRID 2008 is almost laughable, and the fact that driving feels much more fun in the former GRID(s) is enough of a hint. Sure, the driving physics in GRID 2019 are much more "realistic" than the first in the series, that doesn't add up to a more enjoyable racer (in my humble opinion ofc.) Not much matches the "buttery smooth" feeling of driving a C5.R Corvette GT1 at full tilt in GRID 2008, that same feeling is something you don't really experience much in this hunk of trash.

The only thing I can find redeemable in this "revision", is the fact that there are some pretty obscure cars in this game. The BTCC version of the Alfa Romeo 155, BMW M1 Turbo Group 5, and the Pagani Zonda Revolución just to name a few.

Thing is, two of those three vehicles I just mentioned where in GRID: Autosport... So, yeah. shrugs

Just do yourself a solid and don't waste your money on this ♥♥♥♥, get GRID 2008 instead.

You will thank me later. ~❤

Early Access Review
Like Spore's creature creator... But for cars.

Man this game is fantastic...

The amount of possibilities are virtually endless. And if you are creatively inclined, you will have a ball making vehicles in Automation.

The Gameplay

I absolutely love the amount of stuff you can do to make cars in Automation. You can literally make vehicles your own. The vehicle bodies are really the only "preset" thing in this game, and even then, you can morph the body to truly make your labor of love unique. From there, it is up to you to plan out what kind of vehicle you want it to be... Do you want a Heavy Duty truck? Do you want a small Sportscar? Maybe a ultra fast Hypercar... The choice is up to you when it comes to this wonderful game.

You have plenty of different types of engines you can design, and you pick all the types of parts it consists of. You want a massive gas guzzling Cast Iron block carbureted V8 that produces barely any power? You got it. A tiny twin-turbo DFI Inline 3 cylinder? You bet. You got everything from V12s to 3 cylinders and everything in between (V16s if you purchase the DLC), even boxers.

The only thing that bugs me, is that there is not a 2-stroke option, you are forced to use a 4-stroke engine type. That, and the lack of ability to supercharge your engine. I really hope the devs add these things in a future update... Wink wink nudge nudge. C'mon devs, I believe in you.

Then there is the part where you can really let your creativity shine, the fixture editor...

This bit is pretty reminiscent of Spore's creature creator (as mentioned at the beginning of this review). Meaning you have tons of fixtures you can choose from. Lights, bumpers, plastic/chrome trim, rims, etc. At this point, you are really only limited by your imagination. You can even change the material/color of every part of that fixture. Meaning, you are not limited to using headlights as just headlights. You like the shape of it? You can convert it to look like a taillight (although, it wont look right on BeamNG. Because at the end of the day, it is still a headlight. I'll get to that later.)

Once all is said and done, you can see how well your car does under specific markets, some somewhat silly things may happen here. Say you made a minivan meant for families... Well, depending on how you built it, the game may say it appeals to the "Muscle" market or the "GT" market. It is usually a good idea to pay attention to this bit, as it will tell you how good your car does in that specific market. The game boils down your cars effectiveness in that market to 6 things, competitiveness and affordability being the two main things you really want to pay attention to. If you want to delve deeper into this, you can see how well your vehicle will sell in one of 5 fictional countries, I, however, never payed attention to it, so your mileage may vary with that.

Oh, and there are some instability issues and bugs associated with the game, it can (and will) crash from time to time, and sometimes the game will not let you place fixtures on vehicles. Those aren't a deal breaker, though, because your creations are saved very frequently, and the game starts up very quickly.

Its in beta, so give it a break.

The Graphics

The graphics are alright. Not the best, but certainly not the worst. I couldn't imagine this game taking a powerful computer to run, I can't exactly test that, however. Chrome on vehicles can sometimes be hit or miss, it mostly looks fine though. It depends on the environment your vehicle is in, and where you are taking pictures from... Which brings me onto the next thing.

Photo Scenes

The Photo Scene feature is really neat, you can get some really cool shots. Your car basically spawns in an open area, that means you can position your vehicle really anywhere you want in that area, which also means you can get pretty damn creative with your pictures. You can manipulate the lighting too, which is also a nice part of this feature. The only thing that I do not like very much about this feature, is the fact that it is quite touchy... Although that isn't really a bad thing, per se.

Steam Workshop

The Steam Workshop for this game seems a little bit baron. There is custom content for you to try, but from my experience, a lot of it is outdated (as of 4/24/19, the date this review was published). If you are planning on getting Automation for it's workshop content, wait a while for more stuff to be uploaded.

BeamNG compatibility!

This is one very cool thing you can do with Automation.

If you have BeamNG.drive, you can port over your vehicles over to it that you made on Automation. Its super cool to test out and drive your labors of love on there... And wreck them, too. Hehe. The imported cars wont exactly look as good or be as detailed as the ones made for BeamNG, but they still look good on there.

Conclusion

This has to be one of the most fun games/"tools" I have ever played, mainly because I absolutely adore vehicles (and making them). It is a totally cool experience, and If you are quite creative and you love cars/trucks, this is worth the the 30$, no doubt. But if you are on the fence about it, just wait for a sale.

"Your face has only local multiplayer!"

That is the kind of ridiculous and amusing stuff you can say in this game. Its great fun, but I would imagine it would get repetitive eventually.

Best $0.79 I have ever spent. ('Twas on sale mind you.)
