I'm really enjoying Arelite Core, and that's surprising to me, because I don't generally play games with turn-based combat or those that are party-based. That being said, I think it's a testament to this developer that a gamer like myself could find enjoyment in a game that's not typically in his or her "wheelhouse.'

To begin with, the graphics are really sharp and clear. Though the images I see on my higher end gaming laptop with a GTX 970 aren't quite as vivid as the stills on the Steam page for this game, they come pretty close. The characters are well-defined artistically, and the variety of enemies took some real time to individualize.

In regard to layout, I noted that one reviewer mentioned an RPG Maker-like appearance, and that's partially true. However, I found more diversity in area design and assets the further I progessed in the game.

The soudtrack has a retro vibe to it, but it's very repetitive. I can't say that I heard anything revolutionary or that I would want to invest in the soundtrack. This isn't a soundtrack to jam by, and it's not what I would consider soothing, so I don't see myself listening to it outside of normal gameplay.

The storyline is really quite deep, and this is a much more involved game than I'd originally anticipated. I've noticed a trend in some of the more recent game publications where emphasis is put on blacksmithing, weaponsmithing, or smithing as a crafting skill. It's a trend that's actually appealing to me and should also hit its mark with classic RuneScape players who spent hours mining and smithing to get the perfect armor and weapon set.

As I mentioned above, this is a party-based game with turn-based combat. You'll begin with one main character and add to your party as the game progresses. Each character has its own unique special skills, combat styles, and weaknesses. In this regard, it does require a bit of strategy as the battles gain in complexity. While exploring different areas and completing quest objectives to complete the story, you'll encounter many battle instances, some of which you can see coming by the presence of an enemy you can't avoid, and many you won't see coming at all. During battle, each character rotates and gets a turn whereby you have to decide whether to use a basic attack, special attack, item, or skill. The reverse is also true, because your opponents will essentially be doing the same thing. There is a certain amount of randomness to the battle instances, as you'll see varying types of enemies, number of enemies, hitpoint variations, and a variety of attacks and skills being thrown at you. This fact alone creates some degree of replay value and prevents the game from feeling stale or stagnant.

In addition to combat, there is a looting mechanic, as you'll often obtain currency drops or find items while exploring. Some of these items can be used right away, such as weapons, armor, and gear, while others might not have an apparent use until later in the game. You'll also encounter merchants and shops of varying types from which you can purchase gear or consumables for your party. Talking with NPCs throughout the game can point you in the right direction if you're having difficulty determining what to do or where to find something.

All gamers should be aware that this is a lengthy game, and it feels somewhat slow-moving at times. I've seen projections somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 hours of gameplay; however, with the high degree to which I've been encountering battle instances, it has made storyline progression feel interrupted.

In regard to controller mechanics, the developer has done some really solid work here. I've been playing with a wired XBox 360 controller, and I've not had any issues in regard to controller mechanics or menu navigation. Gamers have the ability to save their game at any time via the menu interface, and that's in addiiton to autosaves along the way. There's no reason why this game can't be played in short durations if time is a factor for you.

Overall, I certainly recommend Arelite Core. It's got a very retro feel to it; in fact, it reminds me a lot of Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara. If you enjoy that style of game, as well as party-based games or those with turn-based combat, you're in luck. Arelite Core is definitely for you. If, however, you're are a gamer like myself who doesn't naturally gravitate to these types of games, but are willing to broaden your horizons a bit and try something new, I'd absolutely recommend that you give it a try. My assessment at this point is that if you try Arelite Core and don't like it, then this genre of game is probably not for you, but if you have a reasonable adaptable gaming acumen, you may just find a new favorite. Achievements and steam cards are included with this game, but at this price point, that's not a deciding factor for purchasing in my opinion. If this sounds like a game for you otherwise, though, then it's worth every penny.

I wasn't holding out much hope for Undead Blackout, but I can say in all honesty that it managed to underwhelm me even beyond those minimal expectations.

Graphically, the game is very dark. It's nearly impossible to see anything, which tells me that the "gimmick" for this game is nothing more than a poorly done game of, "Hide & Seek." While I will admit that it was a bit creepy the first time I enountered a group of zombies standing with their backs to me, that only works once. It ceases to be interesting when it's overdone.

The game starts you off with a limited amount of health and stamina, but neither are enough to accomplish anything. Your flashlight illuminates a very small area, though you do have the ability to turn 360 degrees to light up your surroundings. The problem is that zombies will often pop up behind you when you're trying to open doors or look inside of a cell to determine if it's worth entering. This concept is also overdone, as there are numerous cells, doors, and rooms, with a huge amount of empty, wasted space. I played for an hour, yet I didn't see anything of value, nothing that would remain with me after the game.

Keys, weapons, ammo, and health packs are few and very far between. This game attempts to create random gameplay and thereby add replay value by these items popping up, or all too often not popping up, in various areas. The floorplan seems to stay the same, and I learned very quickly which handful of areas to check for items, so for me, there is no replay value.

Movement and combat are very inconsistent. At times, I would find that sprinting didn't work, even with plenty of stamina available. I also found that the distance for combat isn't definite or consistent. Sometimes I'd have to be right up on a zombie to do any damage, while at other times, I could stand an entire square away and land a good hit. That kind of inconsistency makes it nearly impossible to safeguard the limited health that's provided for the character.

Overall, I didn't see anything that would make me want to play again, and I have no desire to finish the game at this point. When you can't measure, predict, or repeat gameplay activities consistently, all you're left with is frustration and disgust. You'll absolutely want to pass on Undead Blackout if consistency matters to you as a gamer.

*Please note that I did receive a key for this game in exchange for my honest review.

I had an absolute ball with Gatling Gears!

I was looking for a few good twin-stick shooters with full controller support, and among the many I've tried, this is one of my favorites. I've spent over 16 hours on it so far, and I played all the way to the end, fully upgrading my character, called a "Walker."

The graphics and animations are wonderful! The screen is very clear, and the characters have unique attributes and expressions which make them identifiable. If you pay attention, you'll even notice quite a bit of humor, particularly in how the workers on the conveyer belts move, the billboards, and the final boss battle.

The soundtrack is also good, and it's extremely helpful while playing, because certain sound effects alert you to what's coming. I played most of the game with the sound off, just so I didn't disturb my husband watching T.V., but if you leave the sound on, you'll have even quicker reaction times with the advance warning that the sound effects can provide.

Gameplay

Your character is the uncle, and you're in a mech called a walker. This walker can be upgraded multiple times, and gold bars are the currency by which this is accomplished. Bars are obtained through normal gameplay as you complete levels. You also gain experience points through gameplay, and these are used for cosmetic unlockables: skins, effects, and pets. These don't impact gameplay in any way and are purely cosmetic but can certainly gain you some bragging rights.

There are 5 full chapters, each with area levels that progressively introduce more enemies and increased projectile speed. The game sports fully functional, and very responsive, controller support, so this is definitely a game that can be fully enjoyed with a controller. I used an XBox 360 and didn't have any issues in that regard.

Gatling Gears can be played on easy, normal, and hard difficulty levels, and it also includes campaign and survival modes. Additionally, you can resume the game right where you left off if you die or exit the game. You have 3 lives, but never fear, this is not a permadeath situation, because once you've completed a level within a chapter, you can always pick right back up where you left off, and any upgrades or unlockables stay with your walker. You'll never go any further back than repeating the specific area where you died.

Hardcore gamers, never fear, because you can still strut your stuff and create an even harder challenge by utilizing the hard difficulty setting or simply not using grenades and rockets. If that's not enough for you, then you can actually use gold bars to reverse upgrades, creating a whole new difficulty level for those who are gluttons for punishment. If you're into co-op, the niece can also be played for some tagteam bad-assery.

Overall

I really enjoyed this game. I paid full price for it, simply because I wanted to play it, and I'm very glad that I did. I've gotten over 16 hours of enjoyment out of it already, and I can see myself spending more time with it to obtain the remaining achievements. I definitely recommend it to both casual and hardcore gamers and also those who enjoy twin-stick or arcade shooters. It was a whole lot of fun.

Despite the negative reviews, I wanted to give this game a try.

The description alone was intriguing to me, so I was hopeful that this would be an instance where I was able to find enjoyment despite the general concensus. Unfortunately, however, this was not the case.

The graphics are blurry, and it's nearly impossible to play the game with a controller.

Full controller support is listed as a feature of the game, but what I found was that while it does indeed have controller support, it's not very good controller support. The aiming mechanic is infuriating, and I found myself having to jump to hit enemies with bullets. The controller support is also inconsistent. While on one attempt I was able to aim and shoot an enemy directly below, in another instance, those attempts were fruitless. It seems that the right joystick should work for aiming, but it doesn't, meaning that there is no mechanism for aiming and standing still. There are so many enemies that you can't see, hiding in what are essentially "blind spots." Coupling that with the poor controls results in frustration as opposed to a fun gaming experience.

I did like the option for easy and normal difficulty settings, allowing for one continue per level on the easy setting. However, with the game being pretty much unplayable at this point, that one positive feature isn't enough to warrant further attempts to play the game.

Overall

I was very disappointed. I tried playing for a full hour before giving up, and I also went to the discussion forum looking for help, but there was no indication from the developer that these issues are even acknowledged, so it's not likely that we will see a fix for these issues in the future. I recommend passing this title by for much more promising options.

If you like twin-stick or arcade shooters, Crimsonland is one you'll want to check out. Lately, I've been on a shooter gaming kick, but FPS are not generally for me, and permadeath is also a feature that I tend to avoid. Crimsonland is a top-down shooter with responsive controls, full controller support, and the ability to begin or resume the game where you left off.

Gameplay

The game consists of 5 levels, each with numerous "quests" that serve more like levels than quests. The graphics and soundtrack have a more retro feel to them, and while appropriately understated, these really weren't the aspects of the game that impressed me. It was the gameplay itself that kept me playing all the way to the end.

To start with, you have multiple difficulty levels, which make it a great game for casual gamers and also for hardcore gamers looking for a "tough-as-nails" challenge. For a casual gamer like me, normal difficulty can be completed in 4 hours or less. During the game, a certain number of achievements are unlocked through gameplay, but it also includes achievements that are unlocked on greater difficulties, such as those for unlocking all perks, accuracy, or not taking damage. So, if you're a maniac achievement hunter looking for a real challenge, this game may be intriguing for you.

There are a wide variety of weapon drops, power-ups, and perks that keep the game fun and make each playthrough unique. There are also many different monsters to kill, each with its own characteristics. In addition, there is a local co-op feature which makes it possible to game with friends.

Overall

I enjoyed it very much and would definitely recommend it to gamers looking for a similar experience.

While I try not to have extremely high expectations for F2P games, this one is really confusing to me. I can't seem to figure out the point of the game. It seems that money, earned as loot drops from killing enemies or from mini-tasks called "bounties," buys cosmetic upgrades. However, there is no mechanism for upgrading character stats or weapons.

Gameplay

The gameplay itself also has issues, because if you're moving around the perimeter of the square layout in any level/area, your weapon doesn't fire. You can hear it, but there's no blast from the weapon, and no damage is done to enemies. I also had an issue where a weapon up against a rock simply couldn't be obtained, even though I was standing right on top of it.

I also had difficulty during another portion of the game where I was backed into a corner and surrounded by enemies and simply couldn't move or do damage. There's nothing to be done in that situation except for the character to die, and in a permadeath game like this one, it seems poorly thought out.

Conclusion

Overall, the game has been pretty underwhelming, I'm sorry to say.

I'm so diappointed in this game! I came across it by accident, but it looked promising, so I checked out the discussion page to see if the game had native controller support. It must have been my lucky day, because according to a post from the developer, it had just been added.

Gameplay

I bought the game today and installed it immediately, but after half an hour of gameplay, I'm giving up. The graphics are cute but not impressive, and the soundtrack has an annoying "tinkling" effect that grates easily. What really makes me want to return the game for a refund, though, is the poor job that's been done with controller support.

Controller Issues

The controls make you feel like the character is sliding around on ice all the time. Jumps are inconsistent, meaning that sometimes you jump after a button press, and sometimes you don't. When the jump doesn't execute properly, the character will instead just slide around and glide off the numerous narrow cliffs that make up the platforming aspect of the game.

The distances and heights that your character jumps when a button press results in an actual jump are also inconsistent and actually made worse when simultaneously pressing a directional joystick. I can't even use the potions in my inventory, becuse the cursor just keeps scrolling over the whole inventory landing on some obscure potion I wasn't trying to get to in the first place.

I strongly urge the dev to revisit controller support for the XBox 360 and perhaps tighten up other aspects of the game as well. I'd be glad to give it another try at that point.

Edit 1/11/17:

I wanted to update my review to let readers know that the developer has reached out to me and is taking steps to fix these issues. I spoke with him extensively about what I was experiencing on both wired XBox 360 and Steam controllers and also shared my specs with him so he could troubleshoot. It's my understanding that the developer intends to remove the controller support notation from the store page until issues are resolved, and I've made myself available for further runthroughs. This is exactly the kind of developer that I like to meet, because while a perfect review would be lovely, a specific critical review is just as valuable. Kudos to the dev.

This game is CRAZY!

I came across this one while searching for good platformers during the winter sale, and I am extremely impressed. At this point, I've only been playing the game for a little over an hour and a half, but I have absolutely seen enough to make a positive recommendation.

Initial Impression

So many of the platformers being released are very poorly done, but this one, like the Giana, Ori, and Shantae games, is among the cream of the crop. The soundtrack is appropriately understated, not annoying or intrusive, and the graphics are absolutely stunning.

Controls

Mekazoo sports full controller support, and the controls are extremely responsive. As a gamer who prefers to use an XBox 360 or Steam Controller over mouse and keyboard, the responsiveness and consistency of controls is at the very top of my list when evaluating a game. Like some of the other games mentioned, this one has quick-switch mechanics. You can't enjoy, or even complete, a game like that if the controls aren't responsive, and this game functions exactly as it should.

Gameplay

It's very challenging, as you switch from one character to another, each with unique abilities, to navigate the levels. The achievement hunters out there are going to love this one, and so will those who are looking for both casual and "hard as nails" platformers. There are challenges within the levels, such as killing all enemies, finding hidden gems, or navigating the level without a single death. These challenges are going to appeal to the gamers looking for a real challenge, while casual gamers are going to love that they can play right alongside at a lesser degree of difficulty. Character death takes you back to the last checkpoint, so no harm no foul if you're not a permadeath fanatic.

For those who are directionally-challenged, like myself, look out, because you're in for a wild ride. There are many twists, turns, areas, and mechanics within the game that shoot your character across the screen to another part of the level. I can't keep it straight, and that makes for a whole other set of challenges. You can still complete the level without having visited every nook and cranny, but oh, what a tempting challenge it is to try.

Conclusion

Mekazoo is an awesome game, a hidden gem that I came across almost by accident. Because of that, I wanted to get an intitial review in right away so that others can find this game and enjoy it as much as I am. So, get crackin; I'm lost in a level somewhere, and you just might be my ticket out. :)

For me, this was a perfect example of the casual shooter. I'm not very adept with FPS games, so a game like this allows me to get my shmup on without a challenge that exceeds my gaming abilities.

The graphics were super sharp and original. The soundtrack was appropriate and enjoyable without being a nuisance. Repetitive games like these can often include a soundtrack that grates on the nerves, but this one pleasantly accompanies the action. The controls were very responsive and worked exactly as they should. This is most certainly a game for anyone who likes to grab a controller and relax on the couch.

Gameplay

The gameplay mechanics are relatively simple, aiming and shooting through waves of enemies of varying degrees. There are a wide variety of enemies to fight, and each has its own unique characteristics, whether it be a balloon flying zombie or one that heals other mobs. Each type of mob is a different challenge, and the game steadily combines those challenges to see just how well you can think and react on the fly. You also have friendly refugees that yield rewards, if you happen to not kill them before they cross the finish line to safety. Good luck with that; I know I killed more than I saved (oops) but sure had a lot of fun doing it.

During the game, you'll unlock the other two members of your team, a bomber and a sniper. Weapons and attributes for each of the 3 characters can be upgraded multiple times with gold obtained from killing enemies and saving refugees. There are also special attacks that blow dynamite, stop time, and rain bombs from above to thin out the herd of zombies. You can also upgrade things like blast radius and increase the effectiveness of special attacks, like time stop, with diamonds which are obtained for completing levels.

Conclusion

This is a game that can be completed in one sitting, easily. In fact, I maxed out all possible upgrades and unlocked 100% of the achievements in just over 4 hours. It was a fun game that didn't require a lot of puzzle solving, and it wasn't one of the many games saturating the market that are either inferior or just plain hard for the sake of being difficult. I definitely recommend this game for casual gamers and achievement hunters.

I'll give just about any platformer a try, but this was one of those games that was just unplayable for me. The graphics and soundtrack are mediocre at best, and the level design is nothing spectacular, but what sent this game directly to the "uninstall pile was the controls.

Controller Issues

The first thing I did upon experiencing controller difficulties was to check the discussion forum for the game. I noticed immediately how few posts were there. The second thing I noticed was that of the very few who have posted on the page, I'm not the only one with this issue, yet no real help or even acknowledgement of the problem exists from the developer.

What I found interesting was that these issues were not just limited to controller support. While I was using a wired XBox 360 controller, another poster mentioned that he'd experienced these issues with both a controller and keyboard. I'm of the opinion that there shouldn't be a platformer in today's market that doesn't include native controller support, but to each his own.

The responsiveness of the controls is terrible. It's nowhere near consistent, and the delay/lag between button presses and action on the screen is frustrating. It is nearly impossible to consistently jump while in motion, and if you can't do that in a platformer, you're better off not playing at all.

Conclusion

I can't recommend the game at this time, and I encourage the developer to acknowledge and resolve these issues.
