I played the Bright Memory demo ages ago, and have received this game for "free" for "backing" it back then. I was heavily surprised back then how much the game was trying to do, especially with such a small team. The game has melee combat, abilities, dashes, grappling hooks, aerial combat, wall running, double jumping, stealth etc. This combat in the final release feels more 'directed' and 'complete'.

The graphics look crazy in this final release, with some of the best water and VFX I've seen in a game, as well as modern texturing, DLSS, and ray tracing; on my 3070 I can run all of this at around 120 FPS with 144 cap, and I'll have the occasional lag spikes down to 50 FPS. Overall the look and feel of the game is good, but the performance hits will force even some of the best cards to maybe tweak some settings or push DLSS to balanced and above to make sure you're not experiencing those lag spikes. I'd say this is the one example of a game where I'd actually recommend ray tracing, as the extra colouring from environmental lighting and the reflections in the water creates a very immersive set piece. There was one point where the game completely lagged out in-game and made my computer lag out in turn, going down to single digit framerates and forcing me to close it, which is why I only have 58 minutes; I'll probably hold out for some patches and maybe a Nvidia GeForce driver update.

The story is kinda just all over the place. I don't really know what's going on and it's hard to really take it in or care. The story just goes from 0 to 100 real quick, and I have no connections to any of the characters or what's happening. Maybe as I play this will change but I assume it will continue to be like this. I don't necessarily think it matters though as the story doesn't seem to be the main focus - this is a pretty tech demo with crazy unique gameplay, and having fun with it is all you really need to get out of it, especially at this price point.

Overall to keep this short, it's pretty, it's fun, and I kind of enjoy it. I wouldn't say I'm completely blown away, and there is some level of jank going from melee to FPS that feels a bit odd, but maybe I just need to get used to it. This unpolished feeling kinda runs throughout the game with character models that look odd, forced execution cut-scenes (for every execution), sliding over objects directly in front, pulling enemies out of thin air with F (behind objects), and long loading screens, to name what I've seen so far. This game needs some polishing, patches, and a little bit of time, but as it stands right now I would still recommend it - especially at this price point.

I remember playing and enjoying "Destroy All Humans!" as a kid, and while the graphical upgrade is great, I don't find myself enjoying the game. It is rather simple, and doesn't seem to have aged well.

Killing people lacks any emphasis or "feeling" behind it, it just happens. Unlike a modern FPS shooter that adds in effects, animations, sway, loading, cocking, recoil, and other things that add weight and power behind your weapons; Destroy All Humans on the other hand has none of that, and goes for a more arcade approach... Sadly this approach makes everything feel lackluster and the emphasis is gone entirely. A building blew up? Cool... I guess?

The one thing that I actually enjoy is flicking enemies and wildlife around with psychic powers. It feels good to do, it's visually funny, but it gets old real quick. While the later areas/stages in the game may add more powers, I find myself not caring about anything. The story isn't engaging, the sound quality is as it was on the PS2 era... Bad, and the gameplay is just whatever. If there wasn't so much hand-holding and enforcing of rules in these stages, and it gave the open freedom of controls and direction that a "Jak and Daxter" game gave - a series that came out around the same time - it would feel a lot better. Instead we have a segmented narrow-scoped mission-based game. A remake would of been better than a remaster.

It doesn't work well at all on my HP Reverb G2 VR Headset. It opens up with a flat-2d-screen introduction, and then a 2d flat menu pops up after slamming away at all my buttons, and then I have to look at the options with my head instead of using my controller to point. I then get in a game (somehow) and none of my controls work at all. Maybe I require a steering wheel specifically for this game, but I think that's absurd. Not good VR port at all.

Great art and music, and a very unique approach to a typing game. No more strapped back in your seat waiting for enemies gameplay like in "Typing of the Dead", instead you have full control, moving between all the points in the game, unlocking your way through step by step, switching between the different elements, typing to kill, and typing to solve puzzles; this game feels like more than a typing game - which I love. At the end of the day though, it is a typing game, so if that's not something you're into then it's a hard sell.

The game is visually stunning and the physics on objects breaking is amazing, but I can't help but feel like this game lacks something. The story is struggling to pull me in or make me care and the combat feels... floaty? It is just whatever? It's not necessarily bad, but I can't help but feel like I'm just playing a tech demo.

Feature Set:
-15 Effect Modes (Challenges) with hi-scores.
-4 Multiplayer modes (Classic Tetris and Standard modern Tetris included).
-Unlockables: 84 "guardian avatars" for multiplayer, 200 "avatars" for Effect.
-Ranked multiplayer with SP/LP ranking system (puts you against people your own skill).
-27 levels for campaign/journey mode, each able to be played and beaten on 3 different difficulties.
-Lots of customisation/options.
-Crossplay

Early thoughts:

Tetris Effect is a long anticipated game, for me and many alike, and it did put a bad taste in my mouth having to wait for Steam release while other platforms and Epic had the game long beforehand. Despite this, I gotta say that the wait was worth it.

The music is good, though I wish the mixing was a bit more immersive and that there were more variety in journey mode, with a lot of the tracks being dedicated to EDM-pop and not enough dedicated to other genres, like hardcore, Japanese EDM, eurobeat, or even an attempt at old 50s, 70s, and 80s styled music. That's just my experience with journey though, I am sure there are many more tracks outside of it.

I am a bit annoyed at the barrier to entry being to finish journey mode in order to play with others. Journey mode isn't necessarily long, took me roughly 2 hours, and I am sure someone much better than me could have done it in less time, but it was annoying nonetheless, especially since you don't have access to the alternate gamemodes. I appreciate that they still allow you to practice in journey mode and play beginner - as someone new to Tetris I find it quite hard and the last level definitely took more than a few attempts.

Another complaint I have is the black screening I get. For some reason in multiplayer my screen goes black and forces me to restart the game. This is a big problem and I have no idea if it's the port or my computer but it happens frequently enough to be annoying.

Visuals were quite stunning, especially in the more tribal/desert sections which were my personal favourite as they were unexpected and unique. The unique sounds that go along with the visuals also helped immerse me , the player. Are they distracting? Sometimes, yes, especially on the space map where I am pretty sure the aircraft clipped through the play area at one point. You can reduce particles, but I find that you can have a nice experience with them at normal/medium levels, while the higher you go with these settings the more ridiculous things look.

Is it worth the price? If it was just journey mode and maybe some basic multiplayer I'd say no, but on finding the many alternate ways to play with hi-scores, the globe that tracks real time, the crossplay between devices, the multitude of settings and vs mode that allows you to even out the odds between you and a better/worse player, unlockables/achievements, and the implementation of Classic Tetris... It's hard to say the price, especially on sale, is unrealistic.

There are not many versions of Tetris that have alive multiplayer or as much options to learn, play, and experience Tetris, so I can easily see "Tetris Effect: Connected" as being the definitive way to play modern Tetris online. "Puyo Puyo Tetris 2" has many complaints, and the original version is extremely hard to get into due to vs'ing bots being a very boring learning experience, the campaign being short, and the online being filled with sweaty try-hards that make you want to quit life. Some would even go as far to say that the Puyo Puyo mode in that game ruins it entirely. Given that, and there not being many options outside of "Puyo Puyo Tetris" and "Tetris Effect: Connected" as a social Tetris experience on Steam, it limits my recommendation. If you want to play modern Tetris on Steam, then this is your game, or you can buy a Switch and play Tetris 99.

Now if you are on the fence, maybe you've never played Tetris, maybe you have but it was on a flip phone when you were young and you don't know how to feel about this game, then just wait for a bigger sale, and if by then you still want to give it a try, go for it!

I love the visual appeal, the music, and the overall tone; Delver reminds me of Daggerfall but lacks the complexity and longevity. Think about how you'd run through a dungeon in Skyrim, and now strip that down, make it a rogue-like, and then make it look old like Daggerfall. You may like this, but without dodge rolling, parrying, blocking, special attacks, and anything that modern games add to the melee/magic action-RPG combat formula, it just feels "whatever". I could have this same experience as a mini-game in Stardew Valley...

Love every game in the series. Simple-dumb fun with friends. It does get a bit annoying trying to "100%" a map, as things like texture clipping, bullet holes or objects being in obscured locations, and specificity with the report system can make it a bit of a headache. Despite this the game is a lot of fun to ♥♥♥♥ around in and appeals to my OCD-NEET nature.
