Rabi-Ribi is a pretty underrated game. While at first glance it might appear to be only fanservice or semi-hentai, it's a surprisingly deep metroidvania that is actively updated - since I last played it, it has gotten a new difficulty setting, a boss rush mode, and a huge overhaul to the map system. Rabi-Ribi is very projectile-based, sort of playing like a danmaku platformer, especially during boss battles, and while 50 HP might seem much when most enemies deal damage in the single digits, rest assured that it's not.

The main draw with RR is how free it is. During the first section of the game, you pass through 6 different areas, and you are more or less free to stray off and explore any of them if you want to - and know HOW to get around - and, most of all, can handle the enemies. The game even has an achievement for beating the game without getting your main weapon in the first area, despite said area appearing impossible to leave without obtaining the hammer.

I've only played the game for 2 hours so far, but it's been 2 very enjoyable hours; the main reason I've not played more is because I realized there were some cool updates coming (in particular the map overhaul; the map was the version I played's biggest flaw by far) and I wanted to get them first. The only remaining flaw now is that there are plenty of human enemies in some areas, and they are hard to distinguish from random bystanders. Then again, you can't hurt friendly NPCs, so there's no harm in shooting them a bit just in case.
There are plenty of moves in the game: your normal hammer attacks, carrot bombs, dashing, controlling your fairy sidekick and using her for magic support fire, eating food for emergency recovery... the game is more or less unplayable without a controller due to the sheer number of inputs you need to handle. (FYI, I've played through all of Axiom Verge with a keyboard with no real issues)

If you like bullet hell games or shooters in general, you'll like Rabi-Ribi. If you like metroidvanias or Super Smash Bros., you'll like it too. In fact, I'm sure this game will make you like both bullet hells and metroidvania games, even if you didn't do it before. If you're into fanservicey anime CGs, you'll have a blast, but even if you despise it, the gameplay will make up for it. Higher difficulties don't just increase the damage you take, they radically change boss attack patterns, and bundled with the free exploration, this makes for stellar replayability.

While the 4 sequels does a lot of things better than this slightly improved release of Disgaea 1 does, you're still in for a real treat if you like SRPGs/Tactics games and are new to the series. Disgaea is one of the most freeform games ever. Distribute 10 actions over a turn freely, from 10 separate turns in a row to a Rube Goldenberg-esque chain attack that devastates your target(s). Level up your characters with traditional grinding, or tweak your items with random-dungeon crawling to make them twice as powerful as normally or more. Are the plot-based characters too boring? Create your own! Do you think archers would be cooler if they ran around with axes and longswords? Why, just give them some!

Disgaea doesn't just have a single way to play it - you can do anything you want, and still succeed (well, as long as you did something remotely sensible), and that's why I love it. It also is extremely rich in content - you can easily lose hours in the random dungeons, and getting to the normal final boss doesn't even show you half the stuff you can come across. There are several bonus stages to take on once you're done with the normal story, and the story's final boss' level of 105 pales in comparison to the ultimate secret boss Baal's towering Lv.4000 figure - not to mention there's no end to the power of the random dungeon enemies' and bosses' strengths. Between powering up your party, micro-managing your equipment, and taking on new bonus challenges, you'll easily lose a few hundred of hours in this game, and feel entertained and rewarded all the way through. Slow-paced enough that you can watch videos and eat while playing, fast-paced enough to never get boring.

Remember the good old days when Sonic games didn't suck? Freedom Planet gives you exactly that - speed, loops, attitude - in a package that feels like it could've been on an actual 16-bit cartridge, with worlds that are fun to explore and loot of hidden items, lots of charm in every character, and some of the best cutscenes I've ever seen in an indie game. A must-buy if you're old enough to have fond Sonic memories. Also, it's DRM-free, unlike the latest official Sonic game that shipped with malware.

The three playable characters also play radically differently - Lilac has a Sparkster-style charge attack that lets her cover big distances of open space quickly and a double jump that doubles as a slow descent AND an attack, her cat sidekick can climb walls indefinitely and has a strong attack that's easy to aim, making her the most conventional character and the easiest to get into altough she can't enter all alternate routes. Finally, Milla the rabbit can conjure blocks, reflect enemy attacks and fly, but has half the health of the other two girls, making her an advanced character that is really tricky to master but potentially the best to speedrun with.

I'm just at the 3rd stage so far, but I can recommend this game considerably - it might just be as good as Shovel Knight if it keeps this up!

Mugen Souls is a game so Japanese it's almost bordering on parody, and I'm loving every second of it! From the screen-sized chapter names to the ridiculous character design to the item flavour text, this is a game that doesn't take itself too seriously. But under the surface lies a surprisingly deep RPG with lots of room for customization. Skills can be transferred between characters, and you have no less than three different currencies to balance between all the cool stuff you can purchase such as levelling up your gear instead of buying new items, getting extra equipment slots to bolster your stats, or just get a set of matching goth clothes for your party.

If you're into number crunching and can spend 30 minutes in the menu optimizing your party, this is a must play that will feel really rewarding once you get into the intricacies of the gameplay.

Glass Wing is a Banjo-style puzzle platformer with fantastic, N64-style ambience! It has varied areas and biomes just within the first 30 minutes of gameplay and it feels like new areas just keep coming, each one with stealth elements, tricky puzzles and that little pinch of something new every time. It's polished like granite, and if Zelda was a horror series, Glass Wing would be part of it.

One of my favourite gameplay mechanics is the automatic jumping whenever you move over an edge - it means you can just lean back and concentrate on planning your moves instead of executing everything with pixel precision, making the gameplay more tactical and rewarding. Another cool thing is how items you can interact with stands out from the environment, making it really clear what you're supposed to do. In particular, the recovery hearts look really nice. And the way the title screen and file select menu is directly integrated in the game is really cool as well, giving you nothing that breaks immersion. The game also connects nicely to other works of the same dev and forms a coherent plot with callbacks and references to his previous games - if you know where to look.

On the flip side, though, it has several visual and aural glitches such as the Ferace dialogue looping if you cause the game to lag (might as well blame my WinXP PC for that, though :P) or Mayfly autojumping when going through certain doors which looks weird, but overall this doesn't taint my overall impressions of the game and I'm really recommending it!
