The better of the two Kiwami games and the better Kiryu Dragon Engine game (Sorry Yakuza 6!). It's more streamlined than the last Kiwami game and an improvement over Yakuza 6 in terms of combat. It might seem like a huge jump going from the style switching in 0 and Kiwami to just a single moveset but I never felt like it was a downgrade.

The story gets really wacky by the third act and starts the overall trend of Yakuza stories jumping the shark near the end. Not much celebrity spotlights this time around but the main rival in Ryuji is arguably Kiryu's greatest.

Course the game has some caveats like the Majima saga, it's incredibly short - spanning only a few chapters and Majima himself uses a slightly more gimped version of the Mad Dog style from 0 that can't be upgraded or improved. This really only serves a purpose of wrapping up Majima's story from 0, which it does well enough.

Overall, as a remake, Kiwami 2 stands as a faithful reimagining of the original while modernizing it in just the right ways and it perfectly rounds out the Kiryu releases - Yakuza 6 signified the end of the Dragon while this game was the Dragon at his very best.

A fairly decent follow-up to 0 and decent remake of the original PS2 game. Kinda suffers from some clashing tones with the added scenes and features given how serious and moody the original game was and it really shows, especially with the scenes involving Majima. Scenes from the original game portray him as a dangerous lunatic but things added in Kiwami specifically make him out to be more of a comic relief character. On the other hand, the new scenes with Nishiki help flesh out his character a bit more compared to the original where he was just kinda one-dimensional.

Can be kinda grindy too with how you have to max out Majima Everywhere and grind Coliseum points to progress through the Legend style, unlike the others which work on normal EXP. They also dropped the ball with Kiwami moves - cool idea on paper but you don't start with the moves unlocked and it's separate for each fighting style. At no point does the game tell you this and by the time you get to the first real boss fight, you can be caught with your pants down on this.

Overall, while it's not nearly as good and refined as 0, I'd still recommend it. Despite some tonal issues, the story still holds up fairly well and keeps you engaged and while I have some misgivings with its progression, combat is still fun.

Amazing. Just amazing. Do yourself a favor and play it if you haven't already. Fantastic atmosphere, a decent story (by Yakuza standards) and hella tight gameplay. Or just ignore all that and go sing karaoke or mess around at the arcade.

Unlike the other games, I feel like this one has higher replay value if it's your first game. Playing it again after completing the games that came before it lets you appreciate just how far the series has come.

It's good but it's a shame the game's true potential is only fully realized in its sequel: Mr. Krabs Overdoses on Ketamine

Fast-paced, meat-grinding, teeth-gritting, face-smashing, wall-jumping, blood-dripping, jaw-dropping, butt-slapping, gear-grinding, hat-wearing, bandage-collecting, platforming goodness. Rescue the girl! Defeat the bad guy! Die multiple times in the process!
