This game is a snoozefest honestly...it's a slog to play and interact with, whether it's from the slow movement speed, the unremarkable soundtrack and ambiance, to the absolutely dull environment. Nothing about this game makes me want to feel invested in holding down the directional buttons and hoping something makes the tedium worth it.

Horror games have collectible notes but this game is too enthusiastic to make entire narratives through them for which if you ignore a lot of context will be lost. It's just not fun to have to be given mountains of text every minute and have to sift through it even remotely to have a clue on the storytelling. It works out for VNs since they are directed entirely around the concept, supplementing reading with sprites / art, voice acting, and other forms of intractability that isn't just moving dialogue along.

The game achieved what it set to do in replicating the look and feel of a retro 80's game, but in doing so let the limitations of that direction manifest and create an experience that would have only impressed me in 1983, not 2023.

The angle depicting the GSG Helmet in the picture is misleading. In-game, it does not cover the neck which throws off the look of the armor set

The gold plated armor skin looks dull in sheen, especially compared to a F_R_E_E skin (why does Steam censor me saying it?)

If you buy this to support development feel free to. But if you are purchasing it because you want what is offered, be warned that it might not be what you want. If these nitpicks don't bother you like they do for me go nuts.

A one of a kind game with emphasis on claustrophobia, dread, and the feeling of helplessness as you are left for yourself in a hostile and inherently unwelcoming environment. Your only visual cues being grimy pictures of unfeeling phenomena are as much as you are allowed to perceive with your eyes save for your own darkly lit, rustic, gradually malfunctioning submarine; everything else is left for your imagination as you are shut inside with an ocean of dark blood

This is an extremely creative minimalist idea, and I would love to see the concept expanded upon in some way.

Worthless experience
Gimmicky and one note, the interesting atmosphere of Cruelty Squad becomes obsolete less than an hour into the game. In this game that doesn't know if it wants to be an action or stealth game, it becomes a mediocre middleground where enemies kill you as fast as you kill them, making your realistic options either to play it too slow in these giant almost mazelike maps, or go in guns-blazing and dying over and over in an absolutely mind numbing trial-and-error method of approach.

Killing enemies, especially targets, has 0 weight to it - enemies lack any kind of response nor does the game give any kind of engagement, it's just something you do to proceed to the next level. I feel no success or satisfaction pulling off a feature that should be obligatory for any shooter game, so this alone is such a disappointment. The designs of guns don't look anything remarkable, and the sound effects give no personality to them either. How could an FPS game let its core feature be so bland?

And regrettably, there's no question about it, the music is forgettable. It might add just a bit to the "weird" atmosphere the game has going for it, but that's all there is to it. It does not give you any feelings of what you are up against, like in old Doom games, where the metal MIDI is full of colorful heavy and high rhyme that really establishes this idea of being a warrior in the face of a demonic horde. It's sad to see an FPS game have such lackluster care for the OST

This game is there for those that have overly enthusiastic needs to relive childhood trauma of glitched out buggy PS1 games, but to call it an overall fun game let alone a must play is such a misleading comment.... don't romanticize meme games like this please

Surprisingly mediocre. I had medium expectations for this game based off the reception and visual direction it demonstrates, but these ended up being misleading for how bad the game turned out to be

I'll get what I like out of the way first

+Visual Direction
It looks uncanny as all hell that makes it feel off-putting every step of the way and its the most striking feature of the game, one that definitely attracted me to it before I touched it unfortunately, its not very realized and feels under-cooked in that there's a lot of visual artifacts and at times lack of variation - you'll be correctly expecting what the next "scare" is gonna be a lot because the game doesn't make many unique scenarios despite having such a distinct flavor

+Susan and Mitzi's relationship
Good chemistry, full of camaraderie that comes from the hardships of their lives. They are united by their polar opposite natures under the the circumstances that they only have each other left in their miserable lives. It's very sweet and adds needed solace in the dreary world of Mrs. Ashworth

For me it ends there. Otherwise, this game is like a checklist for a lackluster indie horror game

-Really bad voice acting
Some bad VA in other horror games is either campy enough that makes it endearing, but in TCL, its a genuine effort that falls flat. It doesn't help that the sound mixing is ATROCIOUS - some characters just sound like they are speaking into an $8 microphone from Walmart, or through a webcam. All things considered this might as well be the case, but it's noticeable enough that it takes me out of the experience

-VERY terrible sound design
Stock sound effects out the ass and the same piano strike jumpscare playing every 10 minutes...the ambiance is mostly sound effects instead of any instruments, and they play on loop so quick that they get old. Finally, the music choice.. is just so unfitting. Metal and buttrock for a horror game? None of it emphasizes the bizarre nature of the game, or Susan's demons that are the very foundation of the it. This game's sound design is a genuine insult to how much sound and music can leave a lasting impact on a game's atmosphere and engagement.

-Most artificial story with plot holes all over the place....
like Christ, The Queen of Maggots ends up revealed as a manifestation of Susan's depression, but then how did Susan get the paranormal ability to survive every fatal encounter she had from getting stabbed, to shooting herself, to breathing in nerve gas? Why does she need a gas mask to kill the pest control man if she is already demonstrated to be able to respawn if she encounters his cleaver wielding wife? Who are these parasites and why should I care? They end up being complete strangers to Susan who harm her life by complete circumstance, where is the buildup to any of it and why did the game try to invest me into the idea of needing to kill them when they are unrelated to Susan? They aren't even metaphors for things that hold Susan back, they were real physical people that other people acknowledge existed tl;dr this game's story makes no sense, has no interesting symbolic value, and is always disingenuous with what it sets up

Not Scary
Admittedly, this game is more set on being a dramatic story than a horror game, but its still marketed as one, and presented as one. Unfortunately, it is in no way scary. As mentioned previously, the visual and sound design is super underutilized to its possible potential, and makes the most nonthreatening, cheap horror that is not campy enough to be b - movie tier

Overall, a maddeningly forgettable run-of-the-mill horror adventure game. Nothing in this game will make a lasting memory with you, and you will certainly find stories of inner turmoil and horror MUCH better delivered in other games. Don't waste your time with this one
