  • The engine is excellent for this type of game! Probably the best I have seen so far in a HO/puzzle game.
  • The story-telling is well done, even when the story itself is a bit generic. Nice camera work and film noir flair (the devs are probably fans of "Max Payne 2").
  • As for the difficulty, unfortunately it is way too low for my taste. I hope there will be a sequel that poses a proper challenge in order to beat the game.

UPDATE: The game bugs out on you randomly during puzzles. I had to restart twice and it would stall in different spots, which is why I never finished it. DON'T BUY, this is a piece of garbage!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

The clicks are unprecise and the low resolution that makes everything look washy (especially text) doesn't meet today's standards. That alone is reason enough to not recommend this game. Then there's the annoying, undynamic music and the lame gameplay in general. I have played better HO games.

P.S. I forgot to mention the terrible names picked for many of the items in the HO puzzles. A baseball, for instance, is a "sphere", a bucket is a "basket", a lightbulb a "button" etc. Excuse me?

Awesome ambient music, prefect fit for this game and its historic locations. Beautiful compositions.

The most depressing game I've ever played when it comes to its story, but definitely one of the most exciting and innovative ones regarding its puzzles and beauty of the landscape. Truly amazing.

This navigates like any generic point & click adventure, minus the "adventure" part (see second paragraph). It is as bad as in any cheaply produced HO game, minus the somewhat challenging part of HO scenes. You get no explanation regarding the keybinds/shortcuts - it took me a while to figure out that the right mouse button is an alternative to clicking the "Go back" icon on screen, which is only accessible when you close your inventory.

You run around, collect items in order to unlock something, and then on to the next. Some minor puzzles that consist of you spending game time clicking things until you get the right combination, because there are no hints to it. What a "great" way to "solve" puzzles. This evokes zero excitement in me, sorry. I am not impressed nor do I feel particularly entertained by the gameplay. Just awfully boring. What a way to waste the wonderful potential that Norse mythology holds.

Oh, there is one aspect in this game that I can give a thumbs-up: the singing.

I hadn't played this classic RPG (which was groundbreaking for the computer RPG genre and made a game like Dragon Age: Origins possible) in almost 20 years.

It has been so much fun to dive into it once more with this truls enhanced edition! Functions and handling have been properly updated, and the game's content enriched with new quests, new areas and new companion NPCs.

If you haven't played the original because you were too young at the time, perhaps not even born, or lived under a rock (shame on you!), then this is your chance. You won't regret it, as this game is a prefect example of how you don't need the latest 3D graphics to have a wonderful, unique gaming experience - for the most important part is and always will be the content and the love put into it.*

*) which, unfortunately, nowadays is a rare thing to be found due to stressful deadlines and marketing people telling the game developers how to do their jobs

UPDATE: Finished the final chapter and...

...have to say that I am disappointed with the ending.

First of, one already knows what happened here, why it happened, and how it is going to end, due to all the notes we find in the game. Nothing was really a surprise in the end. I had hoped for some "Wow!" effect in the final sequence, but instead all played out peacefully.

Second, I liked the epilogue, but it was executed in a rather cheap manner, just like the intro. Why? With an engine like that, the devs could have had a great final movie sequence to close up the story. Oh well.

All in all a good game, but it could have ended in a better fashion. See the ending of "Ethan Carter", which brought tears to my eyes as it was a truly shocking revelation.

My original beta review...

Holy crap! I don't recall the last time a game had me on my toes like this (I believe it was "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter").

This is still the pre-release version. They are currently working on the last chapter, and it has still many bugs that need to be addressed - I found none of them to be game-breaking, though. I am curious to be presented with the final polish of this highly atmopheric piece of work.

I will edit my review once the final version has been released, but thus far, I can only recommend this game. It might not be something new ("Ethan Carter" had more to offer in that regard), but it definitely is a fun game if you like to explore, interact, and be scared out of your pants along the way.

The puzzles were nice, although repetitive from previous games. The graphics are pretty. The story was quite bad - not only don't Asian music and Celtic runes and Northern gods fit into a Slavic mythology setting, but the sudden rise of John to the throne was rather ridiculous when two minutes earlier he couldn't even handle his powers, and half an hour prior to the end he didn't even believe in magic to begin with. Why can't these games have decent story-telling? Some do, but they are rare gems.

I don't get the hype. From what I have seen so far, this is just a walking simulator with a pseudo-funny "story", thus not even remotely entertaining in my eyes. I don't want to be bored 99% of the time in between actual content.

Awfully sluggish movement controls, plays like an old 3D adventures from the PlayStation 1 era. Ruined the whole thing for me, requested a refund.

Also, not a fan of the awkward outline layer used in Telltale's productions, which feels like you were looking at a filter used in graphics applications 15 years ago (when it was "cool").
