For those of you who wish to see some gameplay or a Let's Play as opposed to a written review, here you go :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mT_FuNacZg

I want to start this off by aknowleding and giving credit to a fantastic developer!

One thing I really love about Arcen Games is that they continue to develop the games they put out. Not only that, but they don't nickle and dime you with DLC, there's actual content there and it's always worth the asking price! Most companies put out a game, may do some DLC and then move on. Arcen continually develops and improves their products. Look at A.I. War Fleet Command, released back in 2009, it had another big update and DLC added last year in August, their sixth expansion!

The Lost Technologies

I really enjoyed The Last Federation, and as someone who has, I 100% recommend this Expansion! If you have played The Last Federation in the past, this DLC adds quite a bit to the base game along with a lot new stuff, including a new game mode. You can see the list on the store page of all the added features. I have been enjoying the new game mode quite a bit. There was a lot of challenge in the original game balancing social, political and military things to try and bring folks together. Now, the goal is to keep them all separated, and leech off of their knowledge to gain all the technology in the galaxy first. So, I no longer have to try and nuture a weak civilization to form a federation, I just act like a gigantic parasite and suck the resources dry. It's a totally different way to play and I love it! It's nice to see the "side effects" of research giving me a direct benefit and that each race has unique technologies and a more personalized feel. They've done a fantastic job of making each race feel completely different than the others in the base game, which they further developed in this expansion.

Honestly, it's hard to really review the DLC as I feel like I am just listing the things already listed in the store description. I guess if I were to summerize my thoughts on the game:

I really enjoyed The Last Federation, and The Lost Technologies Expansion only adds to, beefs up, and improves the game. I have literally nothing negative to say about this expansion. This MAY change after I have completed the new game mode, but I doubt it. I'm looking forward to finishing my first play through of the new game mode soon!

Toby : The Secret Mine is often compared to LIMBO and for good reason. While it has it's own unique characters, "story", artwork, challenges, and puzzles, it definitely borrows things from the games it's inspired by. Dark and shadowy artwork, traps that will slaughter you for one wrong move, being thrown into the action, and, of course, the dialog is all borrowed from Limbo. (The dialog, of course, not existing!) If you enjoyed either of the games which inspired this one, Limbo or Nihilumbra, you should grab this up quickly and enjoy. If you weren't a fan, then I'd say pass. All that being said, what exactly is Toby: The Secret Mine?

Well, it's a side-scrolling, action, puzzle-platformer, set in a dark, shadowy world. Apparently, your people have been captured and you are Toby and you are tired of waiting for a hero to save them. Good luck and enjoy your many deaths! Oh and for the record, despite the frustration of failing at platforming games more times than not (okay I struggle a lot, but usually managed to headbutt my way through them) I still highly recommend this game and have to say I'm blown away that it was all done by just a single person! Well done Lukas Navratil, Well Done!

Voidspire Tactics is a fantastic turn based tactical RPG with a focus on exploration, character progression and combat. I could list all the stuff that they do down below in the description of the game, but I'd rather focus on stuff I've experienced so far.

It runs off of a 4 character party system that you can put whatever races you want in. Want 4 humans, go for it? Want diversity and each race, you can do that too. You start with 3 classes, Warrior, Scout, and Scholar and you unlock several others throughout the game. The first one I ended up unlocking was the rogue. I earned this by gaining experience with one of the classes. Once I had that unlocked, I was able to dual class with that character.

The combat is what you would expect in a turn based tactical strategy game, every turn and action is made up in "seconds" which determines turn order. I really like how they've done the turn order in this game. You have weapon specializations with different classes that improve their ability to use those weapons. Like a rogue, for instance, is better at using daggers than any of the starting 3 classes. The scholar has no weapon proficiency and relies more on magic. That's not to say that you can't still use weapons you aren't particularly skilled at. I like the weapon variety so far, most notably has been the crossbow and bow. The crossbow you have to reload after every shot, whereas the bow you do not. The trade off is that the crossbow DOES hit harder. Honestly, I'm not too far in my Let's Play of the game, and so this is just off of my experience within the first hour or so of gameplay. (I'm already a fan)

Movement was a LITTLE bit weird at first, but you pick it up quickly, or at least I did. I will say I am using a keyboard and mouse for this and haven't tried a controller. You can move around with WASD or just the mouse and there are plenty of keyboard shortcuts to make your life easier. However, if you are a fan of clicking on things to open inventory, use skills, or to fight with, you can do that as well.

Graphics are really well done for the pixellated 16 bit style it's going for. Things are definitive and clear, a chair looks like a chair, a bed looks like a bed. You get the idea. An added bonus is that all the items you equip on your characters DO actually show up on the characters. Some people love "retro graphics", some people hate them, others simply don't care. I personally think there are times when it takes away from a game, and times when it doesn't. Honestly, I really feel that it works fantastically with this game and I really prefer it to the cookie cutter RPG maker characters that could have been. :)

If you enjoyed Shining Force 1 & 2, The Fire Emblem Games, Final Fantasy: Tactics or more recently, a rare gem Telepath Tactics, this game SHOULD really be up your alley. The only thing I'd say negatively about this game is a preference issue as opposed to a true con. I would have loved this game to be a bit more like Final Fantasy: Tactics, or the Shining Force games in regards to more units in your party. You create your party of 4 and, to my knowledge, that's it. Now, you can change their classes over and over, and learn different skills and what not, but I think your "4" are with you the whole game. Now that's fine and honestly in Final Fantasy Tactics, you probably only used 5-6 non-story characters anyway. Still I enjoy having a party of 10-20 and only being able to field 5-12 in any given mission. It just makes the battles a bit more dynamic, feel a bit larger, and it adds to the replayability, in my opinion. Still...please be aware this is a preference *I* have and it's not really a con. As it stands, the 4 character party system DOES work well and I am still 100% loving Voidspire Tactics.

My final verdict is you should check out the game, read the reviews, research it, watch some gameplay and decide for yourselves. I PERSONALLY love it and any turn based tactical strategy RPG fan should go buy this immediately. For a 1 man studio, this game is miles ahead of lot of other stuff out there. Seriously, check it out and if you are on the fence GO BUY IT NOW! :D

I'll give you a choice as I often do in my reviews. I welcome you to check out my Let's Play of Antharion and join me as I experience the game, make horrible mistakes, learn, love, fail, die, live....you get the idea....right there for all the world to see. The other option is to look a bit lower and read my review, either way, you should have a bit better idea of what Antharion is all about!

I saw this game back in Steam's Greenlight and I voted it up and have been waiting for it's release for over half a year now. I wasn't 100% sure what to expect, but from the limited time I've had to play it so far, I am enjoying it. I've played through the first area 3 times now tweaking my party and each time things went a bit different. I am still early on in the game, but here's what I can say from what I've experienced so far.

There is a lot of customization for your party, several different races and classes and if you don't like any of the classes you have the choice to make your own custom character. The interface shows you all you need without being cluttered and ugly, not every game keeps a clean UI. Things seem to be straight forward and all of them have tool tips, just to make sure you are informed. The first time you do something (tutorial) messages that pop up are helpful and not overly obnoxious. The game promotes exploration and taking your time to enjoy the world.

Things I haven't run across yet, but the game has implemented are as follows. The choices I make change the world and they matter. You can play the game however you want to. Do you want to be the Shining Example of a Hero? Go for it. Do you want to be a shyster and a pickpocket? Your call. Do you wish to be the most heinous of evil doers? All you! I love options and I love that I can change how the game plays based on my choices. :)

My only con I'd have to say for the game is that it doesn't run 1920x1080, but that's okay, just makes my recording a bit different. :)

Ahh Battle Brothers. I fell in love with this game back when it first had hit Steam's Greenlight section. It wasn't much more than a battle demo back then, but the developers shared their dream for Battle Brothers through a very detailed description on their website. The amount of thought and foresight into what they had planned was impressive. I've been a fan ever since. I've checked out all the videos they posted on their road to early access and I've been anxiously awaiting it's arrival on Steam. I have to say, it doesn't disappoint.

The best way I can describe Battle Brothers is a tactical turn based strategy RPG with roguelike elements and party management. I think the closest thing I could compare Battle Brothers to would be Mount & Blade with Turn-based fighting. You have the Strategic World Map and then the tactical battle maps. You control every aspect of your party. From hiring, outfitting, and using each one in combat, to leveling them up, chosing perks, and finally what type of fighter they will be. In addition, you get spoils after each battle which you can use to fill in gaps in your own equipment, or sell for a decent chunk of crowns, which in turn could mean you get to hire that Knight who was so expensive, or buy that suit of chainmail to give you the edge.

Did I mention that much of the game is proceedurally generated and, as such, no two playthroughs will be exactly the same. The game is brutal and very difficult at times, but if you stick with it, choose your fights carefully, and mold your mercenary company the right way, you may become unstoppable. There's a pretty big difference from fielding a group of farm hands, millers, butchers, and jesters to fielding a group of sellswords, knights, and squires. All things in time.

The developers at Overhype Studio should be commended. Within days of their release to Steam Early Access they had squashed nearly every bug. They worked exceptionally hard to get the game working for everyone. Additionally, they've been churning out updates and working tirelessly at improving and moving Battle Brothers closer to their envisioned completion. They do not update small simple things every week or add small updates all the time. What they do is address any issue right away and then work hard to get a big update out that adds a ton of bonus content and it's quite game changing. The world before goblins was somewhat scary, the world after goblins, WAYYY more terrifying. Thankfully they've scaled down the goblins just a bit and it's slightly less horrific. The next big update is scheduled for February 2016 and it will be a game changer again!

***Update***

A ton has changed since the game first hit Steam Early Access. A bunch of content was added, the new Goblin faction, reworking of a lot of graphics, units, added weapons, armors, named/legendary gear, factions and so much more. In addition to this, there is more being added all the time. While Battle Brothers still lacks an end game, it will still give you hours of enjoyment and the desire to try each new update as it flies along through Steam Early Access. :)

This is my most anticipated game of 2014-2015-2016 right now. I'm so glad I have my hands on it finally! Even with it being Early Access and no where near complete, I can't recommend this game enough. GO! BUY! LOVE!

I'll do my best to give a rundown of the game, up to the point I've played, as well as explain it to those of you who have never played a game like it. Sadly the sheer size and complexity of the game, won't allow me enough room to give you a short and long version of my review. Either way I hope this helps!

If you'd prefer to see the game in action, please take a look at my LP, it should give you a very good idea of what's going on. If you grabbed the game and are stuck, check it out for a semi-tutorial/walkthrough, as well.

Xenonauts has been heralded as the classic X-COM games spiritual successor. It's been compared to both new and old X-COM and it's still making quite a bit of noise. The game is very playable and very enjoyable in it's current state but the devs are still hammering out little issues, doing balance and stability updates and trying to get Xenonauts perfect. If you liked the old OR new X-COM games then you should very much like Xenonauts. I could spend hours talking about the similarities between the two games, but you can read that virtually anywhere. So, I will try to explain the game for those of you who have never played it before.

Xenonauts is considered a Strategic Planetary Defense Simulator. It's around the time of the cold war in the late 70's and aliens have invaded the Earth. You are the commander/leader of the Xenonauts and your goal is to basically do battle with the aliens and save the world. You are "graded" each month by the nations of the world and based on how much you helped them, you will break even, gain or lose monetary support from the nations. You have a lot of responsibility and control on how everything pans out or works. You control where you want to set up your bases, what to build in the bases, which aliens ships to shoot down, what to research, what to engineer, what roles your soldiers have, which soldiers to hire, and even which crash sites/missions to take. There's a ton to do and it can be overwhelming at first. I'll try to break it down a bit more.

Your base is pretty much the very start of the game. You have to place your base so you have decent satellite coverage over land. The more individual nations you can cover, the more likely you are to please them when the end of the month comes. Anytime you shoot down an alien ship or send troops to deal with a crashsite or landed alien vessel you gain a sort of "reputation points" with the nation. The more you deal with aliens in their nation, the more they will fund you. Likewise if you do not have coverage and alien activity occurs in other places or you ignore it, you will lose those "rep points" and funding. Base placement is important as is what to build in your base. It might take some experimenting to find the perfect build. Xenonauts does have a quick start guide to help you and one of the good things is, it does not overkill you with a tutorial phase. :)

The air combat is a pretty cool feature. There is a mini-game you can do for the air combat when you send your interceptors after the alien ships. It's well done and enjoyable but one of the really cool features is that the autoresolve is actually really really good. So if you don't care to do the air to air mini-game, you generally can autoresolve it and skip it. To explain the mini-game briefly, you can pause or unpause at any point and your ship(s) and the alien ship(s) will close with one another. Then any weapons you have active at the time will fire on the aliens. The aliens will fire back and you have the ability to do evasive manuevers as well as retreating. The aliens also can avoid your missle fire, so you have to plan accordingly. It's all sort of RTS-ish with the ability to tactically pause.

The bulk of the game is spent in the ground missions. It's what makes or breaks this type of game. You have a roster of soldiers. Hopefully you outfitted a decent variety. There are preset classes as well as the ability to make your own. It doesn't CHANGE the soldiers in anyway, it's more to ease you gearing up people. The classes are: Assault, Sniper, Shield, Heavy, Rifleman, Scout & Rocketeer(and of course the ability to create your own). So basically you click and assign your soldier to assault, outfit it with whatever you want, then save the gear configuration. Then anyone you make an assault class will automatically get that gear. They have different icons in certain places so it makes it easier for you to tell what role they play.

All that being said, you chose your soldiers, and deploy them in a drop ship. Send the dropship to an alien landed craft or a crashsite and the ground battle begins. It's a throw back to classic squad turn based strategy combat. It's your turn and you can use any of your soldiers in any order. You can move each and every one of your soldiers before you end your turn, then it's the aliens turn. You move cover to cover and with the implementation of the shield units, you even have mobile cover! All your moves/shots/actions are based on TU's (Time Units). So any time you move out, turn, crouch, throw a grenade, or shoot, you use up a certain amount of TU's. You can conserve TU's to make sure you can still shoot and move, or have enough for reactionary fire (taking a shot at an alien if it moves past you or shoots at you). The entire ground combat system is done extremely well and once you get the hang of it, it's amazing.

Those are the big things to cover most of the game. A few other things worthy of mentioning is the fact that you can rename your soldiers, aircraft, and I'm pretty sure vehicles as well. Naming your soldiers generally makes you care more about them and is a nice tool. Your soldiers DO level up, they climb in ranks, the lowest being Private and the highest being Commander. Each time you go on a mission with your soldiers they have a chance to not only earn a promotion(i.e. level up) they also have a chance of increasing their stats. The longer your soldiers survive combat and the more they do in the missions the better they become. So it pays to play it safe and keep your people alive.

There's a ton to this game and I like virtually all of it. I don't think I could explain each and every part of the game as there is simply SOO much. I'll give a word of caution about some stuff and those are kind of my "things I don't like", or "what's bad" in Xenonauts.

Two things I'd say to be cautious of are:

1. At the current point in the game, the devs are still hammering out issues here and there. I have literally only run into one major issue at this point and that was my ironman game got stuck in permanent "Alien's Turn - Hidden Movement Screen". They had planned to take the game out of early access at the end of May, but decided it's not quite ready. My word of caution is to NOT use Ironman mode until the game is out of early access.

2. Money is a bit of a challenge in this game. Spending enough to keep everyone happy and getting good coverage but not so much as to over extend your funds and end up negative is a big challenge. A LOT of people are having the issue of balancing what they need and what they can afford. I know Goldhawk Interactive is still doing balancing, so it's something they are trying to tweak. It's just something to be cautious of.

All in all, Xenonauts is an amazing game and I highly recommend it. The UI is great, the graphics are nice, the music fits the game perfectly. It's well worth the investment of time and money, it draws you in, it's challenging, and rewarding when you pull off a perfect plan. Grab it now and support the Devs!

Hello! This is a game that seems to have nearly a 50/50 split on good and bad comments/reviews. I've been working through a fairly long LP of this game and I figure that I probably should weigh-in as well. I am 100% for this game and I'll list the reasons why down below. I'll give a short version and a long version for those that want it.

If anyone is interested in seeing a bit more of how the game plays out before picking it up, or just wants to enjoy my struggles and successes, feel free to check it out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InfeXUTUooc&list=PLtzgP48ATFJD01tDF_OJ7aNixtraiTUBt

or for any of my other games:

https://www.youtube.com/bumpymcsquigums

Short version:

Blackguards is a tactical, squad-based, turn-based rpg. The story is very funny at times and quite dark throughout. You have quite a bit of freedom in regards to how to train your party, what equipment, skills and abilities each person should have. You are on a linear path, but there is freedom in that as well. There is, of course, the main quest line to advance the story, (which I find rather entertaining, it's funny, but also dark) and there are several side quests that you CAN do, or miss. (I missed a few) There are some things I don't like, (RNG makes things rough and a few multiple battles means one bad decision early can be terrible for you) but overall those can be overcome and dealt with. I recommend saving often, as I SHOULD have been doing all along. Still, I think this is by far one of the best games in the tactical, squad-based, turn-based rpg games I've played in a long time. I really don't understand all the negativity towards the game. :(

The Long Version:

Blackguards is a tactical, squad-based, turn-based rpg. The story is very funny at times and quite dark throughout. :)

The Good:

The pacing of the game is fun and very enjoyable and this IS one of the longer games of it's type that I've played in recent memory. The fact that there's more to the battles than just your attacks/skills/spells abilities is a very refreshing change.

Now, I love X-COM and I know this game catches some comparison to it, but even in the different missions in X-COM you pretty much just killed all the aliens. There's different objectives in battle as well as usable/destroyable terrain. Sometimes you might have to rush across a bridge to save someone within "x" number of turns. Maybe you are escaping from prison and you can fight the guards, or free other prisoners to fight them off for you. There's usually several ways to achieve the goal and they add enough different things to keep you guessing AND make it entertaining.

You are part of a story. so the linear gameplay makes sense. There are flashbacks and you learn pretty quickly what all is going on, well for the most part. There's still a lot you need to discover, but the story is well written even if it's a bit cheesey at times and overly dark at others. The voice acting is quite a bit better than I would have expected. I personally think they did an exceptional job in this department. The music and graphics are also very well done.

The different characters you can pick up for your party all play pretty differently. The nice thing is you DO have a say in all of their training/gear/abilities after what they have initially. A mage plays very different from a warrior, who plays very different from an archer. One of the things I did was had a third mage like character and transitioned her into an archer as I lost my archer a bit earlier on. So she can use a bow decently well and has spells to fall back on.

I think 90% of the battles are pretty balanced, but every so often you get a battle that just makes you think and rethink your strategy 100 times over before you get it.

The game is unique, I haven't seen anything quite like this before. The concept isn't so different from a lot of other games, but the setting, the story, even just the idea of having a group of misfits, criminals, drug-addicts as the "heroes"
is fairly different from the norm.

I could go on and on about the "good" of the game, but I want to address the few issues that I have come across that you may want to know about. It's a very good game, but nothing is perfect. :)

The Bad : (or Frustrating if you will)

The RNG can be exceptionally frustrating at times and bad decisions can bring you to a screeching halt. I don't recommend "save scumming" but I DO recommend saving often, as there are many multiple battles with no way to back out. There were a few times that I ran into a battle that I made a bad decision in the fight before it and it cost me quite a few stressful attempts to survive. I have also fought a few battles without really changing my tactics and only managed to win because RNG (Randon Number Generations, i.e. Luck) was in my favor. One fight in particular that I fought 4 times or more, I did MINOR changes but it really came down to my person not missing as much. In all honesty, this is really the only BAD thing. Now, if I had chosen a different team setup in the previous fight, it probably would have been easier.

Some of the other "Bad" things in the game would be more about personal preferences. I personally play both open world games as well as linear. Some people hate linear games. I don't mind it as I find the story is usually tighter, better told and more memorable in the linear games. You have less "distractions". You have a main quest line you have to follow and it advances the story. You can't do stuff from chapter 5 in chapter 1. There are several side quests however and you can do those whenever you feel like each chapter. I skipped a few or missed a few in chapter 1 as I wasn't 100% sure which was which. There's no free-roaming, it's towns, points of interests, people of interests that you click on a map and throughout the cities. So it's the world map, town maps, area maps, or the battle map you deal with. Again, I don't mind it, but some people will.

You have only 3 choices for your main character. Archer, Warrior, Mage (not sure what "specific" names they give those classes). However, you have a lot of freedom on how you want to train your character and the members of your party. The game slowly teaches you how to play, so it may start a bit slow with all the tutorial messages popping up, but the tutorial DOES do a good job at teaching you what you need to know.

Occasionally the camera angles can be a bit annoying or cumbersome, but it's not much of an issue overall.

It might seem like there's a lot bad here, but in reality it's just a lot of detail. Most of which is personal preference or it limits you....only a little, but again, some people hate any limitations.

Bottom Line:

The game is very fun, and makes you think. You will breeze through some fights and then just hang your head in shame in others. You have a set path to follow, but you can take several side streets along the way and the ride is very enjoyable. I really really like Blackguards and I recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of Tactical, squad-based, turn-based strategy rpg games. It has a few problems, but the good outweighs the bad by a landslide. This is a shining gem from Daedalic Entertainment, well....a Darkly Shining Gem! Check it out!

Updated!!!

The game is a ton of fun and you should check it out. I'll give you guys a run down of some of the stuff I like and a few things that could be improved. I do want to point out one thing though. Since the release of this game the developer has done many updates addressing any and all problems found. Always good to see a developer so passionate and eager about righting wrongs, tweaking things, or just addressing issues.

If you'd rather watch a video than read, I covered Quest of Dungeons twice in my Weekly Runs!!! series, so feel free to check that out as well.

Quest Of Dungeons is an extremely fun turn-based dungeon crawling roguelike game. You gain loot, experience, levels, skills and spells as well.

If you liked Hack, Slash, Loot, and wanted a little more out of it, or you are a big fan of Dungeons Of Dredmor, but feel it might be a bit TOO complex, then THIS is your middle ground. The graphics are minimalist but not bad, the sounds and music are well done and the gameplay is very nice.

You get loot from killing stuff and opening chests and your skills are found the same way in the form of skill books or tomes. No clumsy skill trees or crazy keyboard commands here. Just a combination of mouse clicky clicks, keyboard movement (If you want it) and your skill. Really fun game, I highly recommend you check it out.

I was able to review/preview the game through a review/press copy of the game from the developer. He's a super nice guy and I feel he did an amazing job. All that being said there are still some things that need work.

*** Please Note: I left the below section in to show what I had said about the game upon release.***

The difficulty of the game (at least with the two heroes I beat it with) needs an overhaul. The first floor or two can be relatively difficult and if you are just completely not paying attention bad juju can happen, but overall the game is a touch too easy. I did beat the game on hard and I felt there should be a larger difficulty increase between normal and hard as well as the different floors.

Not only that, you also seem to max out your skills well within the first two floors as well. Now, I'm all about having options but it tends to make tricky situations a bit easier when you have your full array of abilities about 10-15 minutes into the game. I suppose this could be the reason the game gets much easier after the second floor as well. My suggestion would be to possibly lower the drop rate or spread out the skill books a bit more.

You gain a tremendous amount of gold as the game progresses, far more than you could ever spend. Again, the first two floors of the game you are sort of skill/gold/gear starved, but after the second floor, little can touch you or at least do much damage before you kill it.

Now that's not to say there are no challenges in the game. The quest mobs and the boss mobs are still pretty nasty, but they really are the biggest challenge. Traps and normal mobs really offer little challenge at best.

The developer pretty much addressed any and all issues I had above. He added a new difficulty level, adjust the gold issues, and it seems lowered the skill tome drops as well. It's almost TOO hard now. So, if you like a challenge, it's here in spades with the new difficulty setting! Well done Sir, well done.

I still find the game insanely fun and quite enjoyable. As I stated earlier the developer is updating and making changes frequently and I feel he has a solid game. The tweaking and work done after release on Quest Of Dungeons has turned this extremely fun and enjoyable roguelike game into an extremely fun, enjoyable, and challenging GREAT roguelike game. I highly recommend it, even more so than I did before. Quest Of Dungeons is well worth the small $4.99 pricetag. It's one of the few games I feel could charge more and it still be a great deal.

You've seen all the copies. You've seen all the pretenders. The wannabes and the waterdowned remakes. If you want the true master of them all, look no further. Dota was the original and with it's creator at the helm and Valve supporting him, you're left with the greatest of all DOTA-like games,(Or as a certain company has tried to brand the genre MOBAs) Dota 2. If you want depth, balance (for the most part), skill, teamwork, and a company who actually cares, Dota has it all. So, you've cut your teeth on the little "league" game, and earned some respect in the temporary (but I feel necessary) HoN....Time to move to the pinnacle, to the big leagues, time for Dota 2. The most fun and frustration any one person can have. Enjoy!
