First of all do not expect this game to be anything like Fallout or Stalker. It's also not an RPG.
The most accurate description I could give for Atomfall is that it's an immersive sim.
While the game has enough good points for me to give it a positive review I need to emphasise it's bad points because they could make or break the game for you.

The combat and enemy AI is so bad it actively detracts from the entire experience.

The human enemies which you will be fighting 95% of the time are so stupid it removes any sense of danger or tension while exploring the world. It also doesn't help that they respawn after a while and there is no point in even fighting them after you have looted the area, it's just a waste of ammo. Rats, bees and birds are legitimately more dangerous enemies than the outlaws in this game.

The game also has one of the worst implementations of anti-aliasing in recent memory. There are jaggies everywhere and it's just very unpleasant to look at unless you use reshade or play around with the render scale.

So what are it's good points?

The story and progression system are both quite unique and executed successfully.
There are no direct objectives or objective markers to follow, you have to gather leads and clues by exploring and interacting with the various NPCs in the world. Finding leads and progressing wasn't very difficult, you can literally walk into any direction and you will probably find a lead that will help you progress. But I still appreciated that the game respects the player's intelligence enough to just let them figure it out on their own.

Going back and forth around the world and unlocking new paths/areas while uncovering more of the story was a pretty fun experience and kept me hooked. It shows that this is clearly what they put the most attention and care into. If you can get behind that then I would definitely recommend this game to you.

If you can get past the cringe dialogue Borderlands 3 is a really fun shooter with a plethora of worthwhile content on offer, there's a ton of cool loot/gear to acquire, the characters are all unique and fun to play.

The gameplay in general just feels so much smoother and faster than previous entries. The driving/vehicle combat is still as awful as ever but besides that I have no other complaints here.

As I said already the writing isn't good but it's also pretty easy to stomach/get through most of the time, especially if you're in co-op. It's also mostly the main story that has the worst dialogue and writing, the DLCs are much more tame in that regard. You definitely shouldn't let this stop you from trying out the game if you were interested in the gameplay but hesitating until now.

I also have no technical issues to report, the game ran smoothly and without any crashes throughout my entire playtime.

Not the best game you'll ever play but it's still very solid and enjoyable.
The writing and the story is fun even if you don't know anything about the source material.
The gameplay isn't anything special but decent enough, I'm not sure how it is on lower difficulties but I like having to combo the Guardians' abilities to deal proper damage to the big enemies.

It's oddly buggy considering how linear the game is and how long it's been out, I had to reload a checkpoint multiple times because I got softlocked but it didn't hamper my experience too much.

Kunitsu-gami has a much smaller scale compared to other Capcom releases but it's still a neat game with great music and visuals.

The gameplay loop can get a bit repetitive if you play long sessions but it doesn't overstay it's welcome. It takes about 17 hours to complete your first playthrough, there is a true ending with a secret boss but you have to play through the whole game again in NG+, personally I don't feel there's enough replayability for me to want to do that just for a new ending. Though I'm sure there's people out there who would end up liking the gameplay more than I did.

Overall I definitely recommend it at full price if you dig the aesthetics etc. , if you're not THAT interested you should probably wait for a sale.

I've only played a handful of Dynasty Warriors games but out of all of them this is probably the best one overall and I can definitely recommend it.

The visuals are good, it runs smoothly, the combat mechanics are well thought out and the game can actually get fairly challenging sometimes on higher difficulties.

Of course as you level up you can start brute forcing your way through hordes of enemies more often but you have to earn it through progression. Every weapon feels unique to play and I enjoyed using all of them except one.

What I did not like is that you can't create your own character, there is also no story reason for it, it simply had to be what I assume are budget reasons. You also are stuck playing the original character 99% of the time and can only play the actual iconic characters from the series for a short duration when you fill up their bar during missions.

If they take this foundation and build upon it for a future game with more playable characters or at least character customization they could truly create a 10/10 game.

There are probably more instances of the word "f*ck" than periods and commas in the entire script. I don't have a problem with characters cussing but it feels really bad here and like a crutch for the writers because they don't know how to write good dialogue.

Weak writing and unlikable characters leave you with nothing but non-existent "gameplay" (it's just batman detective mode, nothing else) and some cool scenery to look at. I can't recommend this game.

The only thing I will really give this game crap for is the price because you can clearly tell it was made on a tight budget and it's too expensive for what it is.

POSITIVE
  • Great music and sound design
  • Unique atmosphere
  • Interesting (if a bit cryptic) story and likable characters
  • There is some jank which I will get to but the combat is pretty fun once you get used to it
  • I really liked the environment design and general art direction

NEGATIVE
  • Weird cutscenes and "voice acting", 98% of the dialogue is not really voiced, the characters just mumble or make weird grunts. It's really jarring and I would prefer if it was just completely quiet instead of whatever this was supposed to be.
  • The game is pretty short and even then most of the missions take place in the same couple levels.
  • I'm not sure how it is on lower difficulties but the combat can become very frustrating in later missions when the game keps throwing hordes of trash mobs at you all at the same time, sometimes even together with a boss.
The combat and AI was clearly not really designed for it and if it was then they did a poor job. There is a heavy emphasis on deflecting enemy attacks and counterattacking which just doesn't really work like it's supposed to when there's 4 enemies attacking you from random directions. You will spend alot of time on the floor and healing while trying to get in what little damage you can.

If you like Gundam Breaker 3 I can recommend this game, it has not changed or improved much though, if anything the gameplay and especially the visuals feel more unrefined to me than what I remember in GB3 Break Edition. However the main reason you're getting this game is for the gunpla customization and I can assure you that is definitely here and as good as ever.

At least we have a Gundam Breaker that's not dogsh*t on PC now. I just hope we get a true evolution of the formula if there's another sequel in the future instead of Gundam Breaker 3.5
