"METAL SLUG ATTACK"
Defeat a boss using the METAL SLUG ATTACK
The Metal Slug Attack (MSA) is the method in which you kill a boss with an exploding Metal Slug tank as the final hit.

Defeat a boss using the METAL SLUG ATTACK. This is easily done on the first level. When you get to the boss, you need to have the tank with you. Once there, either shoot between 8-10 shells from the tank, or 13-15 grenades to weaken it. Park the tank next to the boss, or if you're far away, drive it forward and hit your jump+shoot buttons simultaneously. The tank will explode, killing the boss and earning this achievement.

An example of how to do it is shown on the right. This is the method at doing it from a distance. If it is too hard, just park it next to the boss and jump out.
General Achievements
"200 TOMBS"
Kill 200 enemy soldiers
Easy enough - you'll probably get this in your first playthrough. The body count is cumulative through all playthroughs.

"1,000 TOMBS"
Kill 1,000 enemy soldiers
The same as above, but you'll have to play through more than once to unlock this achievement. The body count is cumulative through all playthroughs.

"BOMBER"
Throw 50 grenades
Whether you throw them at enemies, or haphazardly for no reason, you'll unlock this for using 50 grenades.

"KING OF BOMBERS"
Throw 200 grenades
The same as above, but now x4 the amount because why not! This will require more than one playthrough.

"RESCUE"
Free 50 POWs
Rescuing POWs is easy - simply touch them and they'll be freed. Dying and having to continue before finishing the level is alright. You don't have to free them and survive until the end for it to count towards the achievement.

"KING OF RESCUE"
Free 100 POWs
Rescuing POWs is easy - simply touch them and they'll be freed. Dying and having to continue before finishing the level is alright. You don't have to free them and survive until the end for it to count towards the achievement.
Multiplayer Achievements
"TEAMWORK"
Play in MULTIPLAYER
Play with anyone in multiplayer. This can be done either as local co-op, or online with a friend or random.
"Mission All Complete" Achievements
"MISSION ALL COMPLETE"
Clear the game using no continue
This last achievement will, without a doubt, be the final one you earn. Playing through all the levels without using a continue can be difficult. You'll need to practice, memorize the levels, enemy apperances and their respective fire patterns. While there are countless videos online detailing how to do this, here are some helpful tips that I used to complete the game without using a continue. First things first, change the difficulty down to easy. The achievement can be unlocked on any difficulty, but why make it any harder, right?

Secondly, you'll be playing in "Arcade", as you have to play from the beginning to the end without continues. There are no shortcuts on this one. With that being said, let's look at the levels.

The first two levels are relatively easy and with practice, you'll probably be playing these several more times over than any of the other ones. For these, it is highly recommended to keep your tanks alive as long as possible. Tanks can take three hits to your one, so keeping them alive is crucial.

The first boss, Tetsuyuki, has three attacks. It lobs shells upward at first, followed by a laser across the screen that you'll have to duck and then it fires an orb that follows the floor that you'll have to jump over. You should have plenty of shells/grenades that you've collected during the level to make quick work of this first boss.

Remember, the pattern of attacks are as follows: lobs rounds (arcing upward), upper laser (duck), lower laser (jump). If you're quick enough, you should defeat it after it fires it's first ground attack. Remember to keep your tank alive during the level for added defense in case you make a mistake. Once Tetsuyuki is down, it's off to the second level!

Level two will have two bosses, both of which are fairly easy. The first is a mini boss, the Mini-Bata, a self-propelled railway gun. Like the first level, you should still have your tank with you, so just let loose upward and avoid the cannon. If you're quick enough, you can defeat it without letting it fire more than a single round. Even without the tank, the rounds fired from the Mini-Bata are slow and you have a lot of room to maneuver so you shouldn't have any issues with it.

The second boss, is the Hairbuster Riberts,a heavy bomber. You should still have your tank at this point so fire upward and dodge the projectiles as they come. There are three lifters that I recommend avoiding unless need be to dodge rockets. If you're missing the tank, or have a hard time getting here with it, stockpile grenades, use the lifter to get level and spam them when able to inflict massive damage quickly.

This boss has several attack patterns you'll need to learn. Its main attack method is to launch propelled missiles which have a number of patterns, such as going straightforward or making loops, from the bottom. It will also fly to the top-right corner of the screen, where it will drop a large amount of bombs that bounce on the train randomly, making them a little difficult to dodge. There is a cabin located at its side from which a soldier will appear in a turret that fires homing missiles. After the Riberts is nearly destroyed, General Morden himself will appear at the cabin, firing rockets from his bazooka constantly.

The third level can be tricky. You'll start out at the base of a cliffside that you'll have to ascend. The gaps are very long, requiring you to jump between them from edge to edge, so time them accordingly and don't jump too early. At the time, you'll fight another mini-boss, Allen O'Neil. If you're playing on easy, you should have the heavy machine gun at this point, so spray that and lob a few grenades his way and you should be able to dispose of him without him firing a single shot at you.

Once you defeat him, rescue the POW right before town (in front of the first tank you see) to get the rocket launcher. Use this to blaze through the enemy camp and the three tanks blocking your both to the boss. There are also two crates above you just after the tank, one with a shotgun and one with grenades. Usually I just take the grenades, but if you prefer the shotgun, get it. Use either weapon to destory the three tanks just east of it. Make sure to duck!

Once you exit the city, you'll find a Metal Slug tank, jump in and keep this for the boss. Right after, you'll encounter two POWs - rescue them! They both drop cannon rounds for the boss. Save these rounds, as you'll need them for the boss fight at the end. Do your best to keep your Metal Slug tank alive; fighting Tani Oh without it can make a much longer, much more difficult fight overall.

At the end of level three, you'll encounter Tani Oh, a heavy artillery tank and possibly the easiest boss in the game. By the end of this level, you should have your metal slug tank and plenty of spare shells. Since the tank is placed below you, lobbing shells from the tank will make short work of the Tani Oh. It's best to focus fire on the main turret; disposing of the two side turrets first will force it to utilize the main one only, which also increases its speed and difficulty.

If you don't have the tank, you'll have to jump constantly to attack it below, making the fight last longer and become more difficult. You should have saved your grenades for it, so lob all those at the main turret to decrease the length of the fight. Next, follow the attack patterns:

It moves in a lower platform compared to your character, so it will always be below you, forcing you to jump constantly (without the Metal Slug) to shoot at him. Its main weapon is its large double railguns, which not only covers a big area, but is also very fast. It also throws mines everywhere in your path and will sometimes use its miniguns to kill you. Warning: If you blow up its two smaller turrets, it will constantly use its main laser turret, which goes a lot faster on it's own, making the battle a lot harder. In short, make sure you have a Metal Slug tank going into this fight.

The fourth level will give you a sea of weaponry and grenades. As always, stockpile the grenades for the boss. In the beginning, stay still and shoot the oncoming soldiers one at a time. After dispatching 20 in a row, a plane will come by and fire a rocket, as well as a rocket being thrown by the 20th soldier. Three POWs will fall from the sky, rewarding you with grenades and a heavy machine gun.

Proceed through the level to the powder keg. Do not blow it up. Jump on top of it to get the Metal Slug tank and the POW, which drops a rocket launcher power-up.
If you lose this tank, or it is damaged, there is a second Metal Slug tank shortly ahead you can swap out of if need be. Continue onward and you'll encounter the fourth boss, Shoe and Karn, which you fight at the same time.

You have the option of starting this fight either on the upper platform, or the lower path. Take the lower path right from the start, as it will make it much easier. It's far easier to fire upward than it is to constantly jump up to fire down below.

"Mission All Complete" Achievements
Shoe and Karn aren't terribly tough. As mentioned above, the easiest way to defeat these two is to take the lower path and focus fire the lower tank first. That'll make the battle much, much easier.
At the bottom, you can throw your grenades below the tank above and still damage it. Do that right when it comes on screen and then back up into the tank below (this won't damage you) and fire your guns into it. You should be able to destory the lower tank without any trouble and realatively safely too. Then just aim up and destory the second tank in comfort. Easy!

The fifth level is very projectile heavy, so move quickly, but be sure to dodge the enemies on the ledges. There are two Metal Slug tanks in this level; make sure to utilize them! Stockpile your grenades for the two enemies barricades before the boss battle. The boss in level five is the Iron Nokana, a highly modified armored truck.

The Iron Nokana's main weapon is its cannon on the front, which fire a series of cannon fire that must be timed correctly to be avoided. When Nokana has flames all over and flat tires, it will lift itself and show its flamethrower turret, which will try to burn you if you come near. After the turret is destroyed, some POWs will come out of it, and the boss will start to fire rockets at you if you go underneath it. If you go to its back, the Girida-O sitting on its back will start to shoot at you.

Some key points to make note of is once the truck lifts itself up and you destroy the flamethrower turret, it will fire rockets underneath. The rockets from the right can be ducked under with the tank, while the rockets from the left must be shot at to avoid being hit.

The final level and boss is HI-DO, a helicopter gunship run by Donald Morden, the end boss. The beginning of the final level isn't too bad. You'll encounter a multitude of soldiers, but they aren't much but clean-up work at this point. When you get to the second scene where the path slips up, take the lower one. It's easier to shoot enemies above you than below you.

Once you pass that portion, you'll take over an AA gun on a battleship, which can be difficult to master. You'll need to practice your jumping on/off the gun to avoid being hit. Remember, you're temporarily invincible during your jump animation! At the end of this segment, don't destroy the powder keg; instead, jump up top and enter the Metal Slug tank for protection and added firepower.

Put the tank on the boat and press onward. Don't bother shooting the planes that come at you from the right. Just dodge them, as they only make one pass before leaving off screen. Once your boat runs aground on the beach, continue a short distance towards the final boss.

As the Hi-Do is the personal transportation of General Morden, he appears on the cabinet, firing rockets from his bazooka constantly, in the same way he does from the Hairbuster Riberts. Morden is constantly aiming at the player and can fire in any direction except under or above. If the player stays under him too long, the minigun underneath will fire from right to left. Its main attack is to launch heat-seeking missiles from the front, and after some time, the Hi-Do will begin to carpet bomb the entire screen.

Try to keep your tank alive throughout the battle if possible. In the beginning, climb to the top ledge and throw grenades/cannon shots into the helicopter until there is a break in the fighting to drop below him. Once you're underneath him, fire upward and when he issues a carpet bomb (when he goes to the upper-right corner of the screen), jump out of the tank to avoid being hit, then jump right back into the tank.

Keep this up and keep pounding away at him. You should only have to dodge three or four carpet bomb attacks if you sustain constant fire on him before his helicopter explodes. Then pat yourself on the back and give yourself a thumbs up. You just beat the game without using a single continue!
